This particular model of the mini-MagLite has a 4-way switch that can select a blindingly bright LED beam, a dimmer light for battery conservation, a flashing light, and a S-O-S flasher for emergencies. I live way-out in the 'burbs' outside Boston - Where we get quite a bit of snow. This light provides me with an emergency beacon if I've fallen in the snow and can't get up. I can tell you from my personal experience that crawling though s foot or more of snow, in the dark, to reach home, is somewhat memorable, hence the flashlight and cell phone is with me always.
I highly recommend this model mini-Maglite to anyone over 70 or phisically impaired.
When I need a flashlight at work I need light now. Not to fumble around with blinking strobe lights and cycling through settings to get light. We rely onnour lights to spot obstacles on path as well as let the trains know you are there. I may try to throw the bulb into an older model light I have.
Edit- If you turn the flashlight off and on slowly it will go back into regular bright flashlight mode. Still a pain when you're carrying tools in a train yard at night while 400,000 lb locomotives are rolling at you.
