2.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding sound for the size, but with a major flaw with the audio input
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 4 December 2019
I didn't end up keeping this speaker and have actually been without it for quite some time now. I wrote an extremely long and detailed review and then wondered where i would put it. It was too long and detailed for amazon really. So I have decided to cut it down somewhat but still go into detail about the speaker. Still is very long so those wanting to know more about the sound, go into that rather than the issues further down. Most of my impressions on the sound are very good.

I will start off with the negative that made me return it. There is unfortunately a lot of things that are not good about my experience.

Now a lot of people will just use bluetooth and not the 3.5mm input. But when you spend this much on a blutooth speaker, I would consider it poor not to have the ability to connect devices this way. As when you have a speaker sound this good, it is always as good or better to use a cable rather than bluetooth so long as you find it practical enough.

The issue is that the speaker always goes into what seems a sleep mode when a cable is connected to this input. It does this in under 2 seconds of no audio playing. Then often takes over a second to wake up again. This results in it virtually always skipping the beginning of tracks off. If they begin with lyrics, well you miss the first few words. This is an unacceptable flaw for a speaker of this price. I thought it was a fault with mine so I returned it and got another. It had the same issue. I also went into PC world to try their one on display and it is exactly the same. I am really surprised nobody else or the professional reviews have mentioned this.

Not that many would use this speaker for audiobooks or radio, but it would basically be unusable via the 3.5mm input. Every time there is silence for over 2 seconds, you will almost certainly miss the next word or two. Really poor.

No other blutooth speaker I have tested out in a store or have owned has had this problem. I contacted Marshall trying to explain just how much it would change my view on this speaker if they sorted it out. I just can’t accept it for such a premium speaker. It will be a simple fix, but would obviously cost them money to start producing them all and having to sort this out. They in the end did thank me for what I had found out, but it was at first quite difficult for them to believe what I was experiencing.

I also tested the charging ability. Claiming it can charge at 12V 3A may be a bit of a stretch. With the correct PD charger, it can get close to 2A at 12V but no where near what it states. It also says it can charge a phone from the type c port at 5V 2A. From the picture of it charging my tablet, the voltage drops quite a bit even when it isn’t close to 2A. I feel if it reached the current it claims, the voltage would drop to a point where it wouldn’t charge your device correctly. It seems to do the job, but very slow.

Yet more negatives is that with my replacement, the tweeter on the back must not have been sealed in place correctly. Whenever there was a lot of bass, you could hear air being forced in and out around it. Basically like port noise. This to me shows that there may be some inconsistency with build and quality control too, but I think this is not going to normally be the case as my first one sounded fine. In the end I returned both though.

Onto the sound.

It isn’t totally without issues here either but none are at all big, and if I try and ignore the other issues with the speaker, the sound is very impressive for the price and size of the speaker. Again, I will start with the areas that could be improved.

This speaker has very impressive low end. Those saying it is lacking need to factor in just how small it is and not just how it sounds. It sounds massive for it’s size. I also don’t get the problem with volume being to quiet. You can’t expect a small speaker like this to be loud while maintaining a clean and accurate sound. This limits it nicely and never distorts. The problem is just how separate the low end is from the mid range. There is a hole in the middle effect. There is very little in the way of mid bass. It seems very boosted from around 55hz – 75hz and sounds incredible if the music being played just has bass at around these levels. If it goes beyond that, it can sound incredibly lacking. I find the bass dial always needs to be on full as it controls bass at around 100hz and if you turn it down, you get the low end and virtually nothing in the middle. If you use EQ on your input device, you can get it to sound brilliant though. But it could either do with the mid bass boosting or not so much weight on the low end. And if marshall had tuned it slightly differently (which would have been possible), it really could have been outstanding here.

Something that I think is good is that is sounds pretty much the same from all angles, but there is unfortunately a negative effect that I think is related to this. As you have the left and right channels coming from the front and back, you get an odd echo effect. Even worse when against a wall. Many instruments sound very distant as if they are in some large hall and sound quite artificial at times. As a very critical listener, I was not a fan of this as it would have been avoidable at the expense of the sound coming from all directions. I don’t think this is such a disadvantage as the audio quality for the size is still more than acceptable.

If it didn’t have the aux input problem and the 2nd purchase didn’t have an issue with the tweeter, this speaker would have been 4 stars, maybe 5 now the price has gone right down.

But the input issue and faulty unit really makes me disappointed with this speaker on the whole.

But don’t let this review put you off if you are a bluetooth only user, as in that case, I think it will likely be outstanding, especially at the price it is at now.

The build of this speaker is the best thing about it. It is remarkably solid compared to most stuff these days. Got a good weight to it and the dials have a great rubber grip. I wouldn’t worry about this getting a bit wet or getting bumped about.

Since I returned this speaker, I took a risk and went with something very different. The IKEA ENEBY 20. This is built nothing like as solid and not waterproof in any way. It also is a little bit bigger in every direction, which does make it seem pretty large in comparison. But what made me try this out was because of the reviews it was getting. And the fact that the speaker plus the battery for it is just £60. And I’m being honest here – it sounds better. With the expense of it not being as practical, the sound and price makes up for all of this. It doesn’t have stereo, but has no echo sound effect and not a hole in the middle between the midrange and bass either. You can make it better with EQ too.

I would actually recommend the ENEBY 20 over the Stockwell II now. But can fully understand that the need for the small size and build can outweigh saving money for the other speaker. If you are after good sound though and value for money, there is not really any comparison. The ENEBY 20 has a dial like the Stockwell II which is pretty hard to find and also has bass and treble EQ built in though is harder to use.

Very long but hope some of you find this review helpful as it seems I have had a very different experience to most.

Update:

I've since been to several stores to see if this is in stock, and after finding another, this aux sleep / delay problem is still there, so it clear that all will be the same.

I have also attached a video I made at the time I had it which shows this problem, as well as the rattling with the replacement I got.

Agudo. No he odio nada mejor.
