I collect Mickey Spillane books and the ones completed by Max Allan Collins, not read this yet as it's in a queue but gave it Stars for the Authors.

The World of Mike Hammer
Reviewed in the United States on 18 March 2020Verified Purchase
Masquerade For Murder is the latest of a seemingly endless supply of Spillane notes and outlines that Collins has worked into new Mike Hammer stories. Purists might question the decision to continue the series posthumously, but the rest of us eagerly turn the pages of any Mike Hammer book. Visiting with old friends like Mike and Velda never gets old. This is an old fashioned detective story that pays homage to an aging Mike Hammer, now recognizable as a celebrity to anyone over fifty and still known to explode in violence when the situation warrants it.

A Must Read
Reviewed in the United States on 26 April 2020Verified Purchase
Prior to reading Masquerade for Murder, I had no idea who Mike Hammer was, what he was about, and what I was about to get myself into. I hadn’t read a crime novel in about 15 years, and thought I’d give it a shot.
The moment I opened to the first page of chapter one, I knew I had opened a portal to another time. I immediately fell in love with the narrative. It’s buttery and exceptionally descriptive. I could almost feel the November chill swirling from between the pages.
Even though this book takes place deep and late into Mike Hammer’s life, Max Allan Collins did an excellent job of really summing up a whole lot of past effortlessly. I never felt like I was jumping into the middle of a long running series and I was never confused on who was who, and what they did. I felt like I was right there with Mike on this whirlwind of a case.
Mike Hammer became someone I wanted to know more about. Needless to say, I have a lot of reading to do, and next time I am in New York, I might just imagine a man in a long coat and a porkpie fedora out of the corner of my eye.

Classic Work by Spillane and Collins
Reviewed in the United States on 12 April 2020Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this Mike Hammer novel. I've been a fan of Mickey Spillane and Max Allan Collins for a lot of years now and I am always grateful when I see a new novel bearing their byline. If have ever read Spillane and Collins, you will read this and any of these co-written works without really knowing how much is Mickey and how much is Max; the writing is that spot on and just that damned good. Masquerade for Murder is among my favorites in this series, including those penned by Mickey Spillane alone. The writing is brisk, flowing easily and indicative of the kind of starkly brutal, at times poetic noir that can be found in any classic Hammer novel. If you have yet to read one of these co-written novels, you can't get a better start than with Masquerade for Murder.

M.A.C and Mike Hammer a killer combination strike again!
Reviewed in the United States on 27 April 2020Verified Purchase
I have to hand it to Mickey Spillane in choosing to make friends and collaborate with Max Allan Collins before his passing, and for entrusting such great kernels of genius to Max. If you enjoy works by either, you’ll enjoy all the works of the both of them. I wish I could sit down and have a beer, or several more (preferably Hamm’s) just the three of us. As Mickey passed in 2006, that won’t happen for any of us, but you can continue rest assured that you can still hear his voice through Collins’ continuation of the Hammer legacy. This book was HOT, read fast and delivered on the premise on which it was based. A tip of the fedora to you Max, you continue to deliver classic Spillane, just the way he would have wanted.
