A delightful romantic adventure from one of the best-known and beloved historical novelists of all time.
Robin and Prudence Merriot have been dissemblers since they were children. And in this age of slippery politics, they need to be. So it is nothing for them to rescue a rich heiress from her abductor. But once committed to their masquerade, they must see it through....
For more than 50 years, Georgette Heyer was the undisputed queen of historical romance. And as these hugely successful reprints have shown, she still has a large devoted fan base.

Every so often I get nostalgic and reread a few of my favourite Georgette Heyer books and I always start with this one. Unfortunately this time I couldn't find my paperback, thank goodness I could get the ebook, it may be a lot less dog eared but the story is still my favourite.

Fast paced, fun, fabulous Heyer
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 12 April 2020Verified Purchase
I have just finished reading this yet again. I am a voracious reader and am selective about which books i come back to but this is one of my favourites by Heyer. The plot is fast paced, the characters charming, beautifully drawn and full of wit and humour. The plot is marvellous. I would so like to see the BBC allowed to get to grips with these as their period dramas. Pride and Prejudice would just pale in comparison. I rate this along with Devil's Cub, Faro's Daughter, The Toll Gate, These Old Shades and Regency Buck. The heroines are strong and full of chararcter and the men masterful. Love it!

An outrageous romp
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 December 2021Verified Purchase
To avoid being caught after fighting for the Jacobite army, identities are switched so that Robin becomes Kate and Prudence becomes Peter. They arrive in London to await the advent of their Machiavellian father, who has embroiled them in dangerous escapades since they were children.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Georgette Heyer book, even though it is set in an earlier period than her Regency romances. The plot is intriguing and the characters larger than life and totally unrealistic in their behaviour but, oh, what a wonderful romp this is. Some people may be disappointed in this Heyer story as it is far removed from her usual story telling but if you can suspend disbelief and enjoy it for the frivolous nonsense that it is then it is worth reading.

Different but no less wonderful

I thought that I had read all of Georgette Heyer’s period novels, but somehow I had overlooked this one. A different period but gloriously full of twists and turns. I have noticed a comment or two to the effect that it is confusing at times, but surely that is the point. It is a story of subterfuge and contrivance; we might know that there will be a happy ending but have absolutely no idea how we will get there. If only there were more gems for me to discover...

I love reading and re-reading Georgette Heyer's books but this is one I had not come across. In the beginning, I found it very confusing. However, I checked a few times and got it. After that, I really got into it and enjoyed every page. I can't see myself re-reading this book as I have the Regency ones. It has not got the same humor that has you giggling.I'm still glad I bought it, great value for hours of good reading.

I am a Georgette Heyer Fan
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 May 2022Verified Purchase
I am a Georgette Heyer Fan and love nearly all of her books, except a couple. This is a great Regency romance, a real one, not like the fake ones that people write today. With this you can go back in time and immerse yourself in the period. Highly recommend.
