Material Witness by Jonathan Maberry is a short story in the Joe Ledger series.
A mysterious phone call to the DMS sends Joe and two of his team mates to protect a writer who is in hiding deep in the woods of Pine Deep. This author has figured out a sure fire perfect attack against the US. It was developed for one of his books. However, many terrorist groups want to get their hands on that plan. Hence, the writer is in hiding.
Joe and his team arrive at the house to find it empty. Within minutes they are under attack.
Fast action, lots of explosions and an eerie twist to the story makes this an excellent short story to fill in a little of your time. Jonathan Maberry’s stories are always worth the time and this one is no exception.

Good to See Malcolm Crow Again
Reviewed in the United States on 11 May 2012Verified Purchase
Quick Synopsis: Joe Ledger and Echo team go to Pine Deep, Pennsylvannia to track down a writer who has gone missing from the Witness Protection Program. Along the way there they discuss the massacre that took place in Pine Deep which all of us who read the Ghost Road Blues trilogy are well aware of. When they get to the town, they run into the new police chief, Malcolm Crow. It was great to have Crow as a character again after these many years as well as his adopted son Mike Sweeney. Of course, once Joe, Top, and Bunny make it to the writer's house, the story turns into non-stop action as they battle it out with an army of terrorists. Of course, it wouldn't be a Pine Deep story unless there was a supernatural element going on as well. A short, but fun read for fans of Mayberry.

Those three words describe perfectly what Jonathan Maberry lobs your way with MATERIAL WITNESS, exploding like concussion grenades!
If you have never tried one of Maberry's books, this short story is a fantastic place to start. It gives you great look at the star of his Joe Ledger series and the type of excitement and mayhem you can expect from books like Patient Zero, The Dragon Factory and The King of Plagues. It's also a chilling bridge to his Pine Deep trilogy of horror thrillers, with a few hair-raising moments towards the very end.
Highly recommended.

Having read the precursor to this book made the subject matter very easy to accept. It was good to once again see the action centered around the scariest town in history. Great reading for a short story.
