This book is surely one of the greatest works of fiction and as the character development is perhaps only equalled by Mr Tickle in the book Mr Tickle.
The book itself describes the very intriguing and complex mind of Mr Topsy-Turvy and shows him to be a character who single handedly says no against society's rigours. The book as many different themes which run throughout its length yet it manages never to detract from keeping a great story, a thing which I feel some other great novels do quite a lot. Perhaps the real theme is the idea of rebellion and forced perspective, is Mr Topsy-Turvy really topsy and turvy or is it because we are regimented from birth to see the world in a certain way. Are we the ones who are topsy-turvy? In fact this idea can even be seen on the front cover, Mr TT is holding a walking cane the "wrong" way round, but is this really the wrong way round or has todays commercial 1984 world told us it is? Holding the cane this way would certainly increase the level of friction generated with the ground, something which would be amplified tremendously when traversing boggy ground. Also in the book Mr TT has a backwards clock which clearly demonstrates his defiance of todays time constraint obsessed culture which single handedly chokes todays McDonalds loving media crazed planet.
