First, let me state I change my router every 18 months because my internet speed increases, I am always adding more wireless clients and then lastly wifi technology is constantly changing. Orbi, eero, Velop and Google Wifi are called mesh because you can install multiple access points that all communicate and can self-organize.

There are three very important things that you need to remember about mesh,. First the Access Point can be Dual band (2 radio) or Tri-Band (3 radio), Second, a radio can be 4x4 or 2x2 (more rarely 3x3). Thirdly the radio can be high power or medium power. There is a huge difference in price when you select different options. For example, the Orbi RBK50 series are 4x4 and tri-band and they are very expensive. I bought the RBK23 that is tri-band 2x2 similar spec. as the latest eero. If your budget is infinite, buy an RBK50 series and add more satellite.

Don't pay attention to the square footage listed on the product. It is totally misleading because coverage depends on the layout of the house. If you live in a 6,000 sq ft loft with open space, you probably only need one Access Point. If you live in an older house with many halls and the signal bounces around a lot, you need multiple AP and a high power radio for the backhaul. There are no secret formulas for number of access points and house sq footage.

Now onto installation. It is very important that you do a survey of your house and determine where to place these Access Points. Don't place them randomly because you will end up with the purple ring of death that many reviewers have complained about. Place them strategically and ideally the satellite should be one hop away from the main router. I know that it is not always possible to do this. You may have to try different locations. This is the hardest part of the installation. The installation procedure offered by Linksys is OK and not fool proof. So, if it fails, restart the installation process.

I was shocked that I had to place the Access Point relatively close to each other in order to get a good coverage in my space. I suspect that the RBK23 don't have high power radios. But I placed them strategically in such a way to get a triangle on the App. (v.s., a line) and I now have full coverage in the house. I was also surprised that it takes a long time for the Access Points to converge. I don't know what type of algorithm is used but it takes a long time to settle. I had to wait 3-5 minutes for things to settle down.

Lastly if you use Apple Print, and you have another Gateway (e,g., Verizon FiOS or Comcast) then you should make the Orbi an AP not a router. Printing will not work properly if routed due to broadcast traffic.

Overall, I am happy with thus purchase, I paid $200 for a kit of 3 Access Point (RBK23) and they do the job for a 3,000 sq foot space. Thank you for reading.

I purchased my Orbi system 4 months ago. The setup was easy and my system was up and running in minutes. It worked like a charm between January and the end of May 2017. Then, all of a sudden, the Orbi began disconnecting from the Internet (it showed the "magenta ring of death" at the top of the device) and there was no way to recover from this issue. Nothing has worked, despite multiple attempts and workarounds, including factory-resetting the device (twice), changing ports, changing internet cables, etc. When I factory-reset it, it worked fine for about 3 hours, but then it went back to the same issue. It wasn't able to connect to the Internet (The Verizon router never stopped working). As several reviewers have already mentioned, this issue seems to be firmware-related, but Netgear hasn't had the decency of notifying its customers about this problem or how to resolve it. Why do they make us register the product if they can't at least give us a heads up about known problems with their product?

However, that is not even the worst part. The biggest problem is NETGEAR's crummy technical support and return policies. Here's what you will be dealing with if your Orbi fails after 90 days. This from their website:

1. You must submit a valid claim to NETGEAR with an assigned RMA number (that you obtain by contacting technical support). HOWEVER,
2. With your Orbi purchase, you only get 90 day free basic phone support. You must pay for technical support if the problem occurs after 90 days of your new purchase, and
3. You must pay for the shipping costs for returning the defective product to NETGEAR

So there you have it. A promising product with terrible technical support and warranty policies. Buy at your own risk.

What an embarrassment for NetGear.

ok, somehow this thing is getting glowing reviews and i'm not quite sure how. Perhaps these folks haven't had to experience a firmware update or something yet.

Background: I'm in IT, specifically security. I also have a very strong development background, including finding various hacks in software/hardware.

This system is poorly coded and implemented. You have to pray to the gods of chance for syncing and firmware updating. Auto-Firmware updates means, be ready to take a day off to deal with getting everything back online.

I have RBR-50 and two RBS-50 satellites. This system just sucks. It takes SO long for things to connect and when they finally do, you have no idea how long it's going to last because another update will knock the whole thing offline.

Now listen, i didn't just pick up this system. I've had it for over 6 months and in that time it's been completely knocked offline a total of 4 times. Tracking it all back down, it was always during a firmware update. You think you can do things manually, but it still breaks the system. Who doesn't want security updates and leave their system vulnerable? It's a zero sum game.

Furthermore, to get support, you need to go to the Netgear community page. That's right. After dropping over $750 on my "WHOLE HOME MESH SYSTEM" (haha) i have to pay $50. for 'Premium' support. Sorry, no thanks.

You clearly outsourced your development to incompetent development staff, god knows your 'premium' support staff won't be much better.

This system is embarrassing and shame on the developers, the product managers, especially the QA staff! Shame on you all. How could you guys not test this out and understand just how bad this is?

I'm now beyond the return time period, so i'll have to browse the community forums again in the HOPES that i can find something to make all of this work again.

I HIGHLY DON'T RECOMMEND!

Great hardware marred by buggy software

First things first: The hardware is 5 star!
Now that it's working fine, I am getting anywhere between 300-800mbps in most rooms of a 2 floor 3500 sqft house
even in the farthest corners where I previously had near zero connectivity - I am getting 50+mbps - even at the outer edge of the garden which is 75-100 ft away from the satellite and a couple of walls in between.
Streaming works great everywhere, devices switch between router and satellite near seamlessly
The backhaul speed between router and satellite is 1300/1300 - although they are vertically close (the satellite is placed right above the router on the 1st floor with the floor concrete in between)

The setup and software experience was however a horror story- I am very well versed with networking devices but no device ever has given me so much grief. After the initial setup, I had massive packet loss. The satellite would drop the backhaul link every five-ten mins. In short, the devices shut down my entire network for a full day.
After 7-8 hours of troubleshooting, what finally worked for me was:
a) A full 30/30/30 reset of the device
b) Downgrade to firmware 2.0.0.7
c) Fresh setup with a browser and LAN cable instead of the Orbi App
l had initially set it up via the android app which had crashed in between and probably messed up some settings. Nothing including multiple resets fixed it and I was about to log a return RMA till I tried the full 30/30/30 reset (google for netgear 30/30/30)

There are other reviewers who have complained about packet loss/lack of stability - please try the above to see if it helps.
However now that the initial nightmare is behind me, love this kit totally

Don't buy if you want to listen to Apple Music or any BBC radio

As a wifi system it works fine - fast and good coverage and easy to set up. As a smart speaker it really is a waste of time and money. It has no bluetooth or airplay so you can't play anything direct from your devices. In effect the only way it works as a speaker is through Alexa but its Alexa software isn't as functional as Echo devices so some of the skills (including the one allowing you to access BBC radio content) do not work and although you can now stream Apple Music on Echo devices without any problem, you can't do it on an Orbi Voice. This is pretty basic functionality and you would expect from the price that it would manage it. Support seems totally unaware of this issue and nobody at Netgear seem to acknowledge that it is an issue.
