Previously ... After many years of using a Huawei E5577C and getting great service from it, I thought I'd upgrade to something that has had great reviews as I am sure the tech in the devices is better now than when I got the Huawei unit which was way way cheaper. I'm not a techie sort of person who deals with this stuff on a day to day basis but then I didn't need to be with the Huawei. The Netgear Nighthawk arrived, has a quick start manual and inserting the battery, the item turned itself on. Went through the set up of new passwords no problem, it showed I had an EE card in the device but told me I am not connected to the internet and that my internet connection is disconnected and APN Set up is required. None of this is mentioned in the manual that I can see. Sorry, but what is APN and why do I need to know this when many other devices have been plug and play. I put the EE sim back into the Huawei and it worked fine. So I put the sim back into the Nighthawk, reset it, and it came up with the same message. So it wasn't the changing of passwords etc that were causing the issue. I went and got the ipad and entered the browser address to bring up the dashboard and there made some settings which were intuitive to make and it started to work. The Nighthawk knew I had an EE card in the slot as it showed that on the display as well as the messages from EE, so why did I have to go through all the hassle of going into the dashboard to simply select EE as the sim card in the device. As ever, Netgear devices can be the most puzzling but there is some good news and that is the device on one speed download/upload test (I will do more) was twice as quick as what I was getting on the Huawei which worked but was just old tech. I should also add the battery is twice the size as the Huawei one, if not more and the Nighthawk device bigger and heavier than the Huawei. Lots more testing to be done but in summary, once the hurdles were over come, the unit is solid and fast. - Larry
This. (ORBI_EXT) is supposed to have the same password as the router. Which is ok but you have to change that password. The _ext password reverts to the admin username and password. Adding any devices to this network becomes impossible
You cannot access a WiFi network as a user by using the default ADMIN password.
This router is unfit for purpose and I do not reccomend it.
In addition if you try to connects a new device using WPS,all other connected devices lose the connection
In poor reception area I get about 0.6 MB (about 4-5 megabits) down and 1 MB up speed, and in excellent areas 5.5 MB down and about the same up.
The build quality is good, but not exceptional for the price. I actually prefer the non touch screen of the MR1100, because the screen keeps activating whenever I accidentally brush across the buttons when I am getting out of pocket etc. Short 5s or so, but all contributes to draining battery.
Battery life on light use is around 18hrs. Yet to try constant download.
In this model they took away the SD card slot. Would be nice to have it considering it is £130 more than the MR1100 which has one. Also for this price another ethernet port would be good.
Sadly, I cannot recommend this unit at all so far. While it is a well-presented unit, looks are not the necessity... a fast-stable signal is, especially for this price!
So far, I have had very poor and disappointing, speeds despite 'doing the rounds' of the whole house trying to find a better signal spot. It is appropriate to add that I have also used twin TS9 areal which, though they are clearly increasing the signal, it is so little as to make no valuable difference.
As an example of an initial basic check, a well-known Broadband Speed Checker was used on the old then the new units. The difference was small with the slowest speed being for the M2 which showed 0.2mbs!
I cannot comment on the battery life as I have only had the unit for short while. The build quality seems excellent.
Put basically, this is a very expensive unit and for this amount of money, and being dual band etc, I expected a much better performance as compared to the old unit.
Further checking will follow but sadly I think it may have to be returned as it is possible that I have been unlucky and have a faulty unit.
