I have owned the beard version of Nekmate for a few months now and wanted to give a try to the back version too. I’ve received the product yesterday and immediately put it to use, given that my neck hair was going wild due to all the shops being closed during lockdown!
Here is my honest opinion about it. PURPOSE: It absolutely succeeds in serving its purpose. It takes no time to be put in place, and because the red guard is long enough, you can see the two ends which makes it very easy to tell whether it is straight. Once it’s positioned, trimming is so easy and quick. It firmly stays in place, so all you have to do is follow the guard horizontally with your trimmer and the job is done with just a few movements (make sure you go in both directions, up and down,so you go against the grain on both sides).
CONSTRUCTION: It’s well made of good quality silicone, so it’s soft and it feels durable too. Because it’s so flexible, it adheres to your skin perfectly and it won’t move once it’s in place. I also love how long the guard is, my head is pretty large and I was worried that the shape might have been too small. However, it is so long that it will fit you no matter how big your head is.
COMFORT: I think it’s comfortable. I read several comments regarding the tightness of the band, but I think that the tightness is absolutely perfect for me and really allows me to shave very easily. You definitely don’t want a shaving template to move while you are working with a razor or trimmer in that area. I’d give it 5 stars for comfort honestly.
VALUE: It’s a steal for this price. If you think about how much barbers charge nowadays, (if you can even find one that is allowed to be open!) it’s so nice being able to clean up your haircut at home whenever you want to. Works great for the kiddos too!
To sum it up, I am very satisfied with my purchase and I can only recommend this product. It’s a must have if you like cut your own hair or freshen up your haircut at home. Unless you go to the barber every week, I honestly believe that you should have one of these.
It seems like such a good, simple idea: have a straight edge at the back of your head as a template to shave up to. In practice, this device is uncomfortable, non-adjustable, and just not doable in the few moments of discomfort that are bearable while figuring out how to shave the back of my head. I don't like it.
Wow, since the pandemic started I have been cutting my own hair. I am not a barber but as an older man with underlying conditions I have been advised to continue sheltering at home. Since I couldn’t go out for a cut I finally broke down and ordered a set of hair clippers and attachments from amazon. After watching a couple of do it yourself haircut videos online I got pretty good at it EXCEPT for my neckline. Holding a hand held mirror in my left hand trying to see the back of my head using another mirror in front of me, trying to hold the clipper in my right hand and get a straight neckline looking at that reversed mirror image was impossible for me. This device remedied that problem for me. I get a crisp clean barber cut look on my neckline now every time. I am 100% satisfied. Thank you!
To line it up good enough, extend your index fingers place on bottom edge of band on both ends, and look at yourself in the mirror. Line it up that way. Do the same thing when trimming my bangs. If you are not sure of yourself after cut, put your camera/cellphone on record and hold it back far enough to see the cut, then look at it.
This was about $20, I'd easily spend that on 2 haircuts, if not only one. The big Orange band can come off of the little band for cleaning, hair likes to stick to it but it comes off. Used a razor sort of like the one in the picture, and it never cut the band, you'd have to seriously try to cut that band, even if you did, that orange band is so thick it wouldn't hurt it that much if at all. If it is going over your ears, no it doesn't feel the best in the world, but you won't be wearing it very long because it does not take that long to cut. I found that going over the ears, I could make the band go low enough. Depends on shape of head. Great product!!!! This thing will probably last forever. Very happy!! My hair cut is now, shave to 1" then trim everything myself!
This should NOT say one size fits all. It is one size and will only fit if you are lucky. For me, it is not tight and cannot be adjusted at all for the line along the back of my neck. The only placement that is firm is too high. I do not recommend this product.
Well, it came quickly and it is as it appears in the picture, however.... I feel stupid for paying $20 for a big rubber band that doesn't fit my fat head. I'm sure it won't last. No, I would not buy again. Can't recommend it. Could do the same thing with a big rubber band for much less money. I would recommend a head band being able to do the same thing.
It's not very comfortable, and you have to take a little time and care to make sure you have it on straight, but it works. I've also use it as a guide when cutting the layer's on the sides of my head then use the fade guides to get rid of the lines. You'll have to take the big silicone block off to do this, and if you want to go up higher than an inch from the top of your sides make sure nothing breakable is around in case it slips off and acts like a high powered rubber missile. Over all it's kind of painful but you can use it for a little more than the task its designed for when cutting your own hair, a little experimentation and you'll have a decent self-cut high and tight.
The device doesn't stay on your face especially when reaching back to use your blades. Its really difficult to operate on your own and to ensure it rests straight against your neckline, etc. I would not recommend this product and continue to look for better options to maintain a straight razor cut line on your neck when self cutting.
