5.0 out of 5 stars Significant upgrade over in-built iMac mic. Very happy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 October 2017
I bought this USB mic so that I can record short snippets of voice over for some work videos. I use an iMac and I've used the in-built mic a few times before and I've always made it work by tweaking the audio post-production and lowering my standards.

But with this mic, the £27 spent has saved me a lot of effort post-production because the sound quality is fantastic. For simple voice overs on short videos, the clarity of speech is immediately noticeable and it sounds like you've gone from recording in a busy room to a silent room.

It does pick up noise from quite some distance, so it's not as good as perhaps a dynamic cardioid mic, but I sit in an office with a motorway less than 100 metres away and it doesn't pick up any traffic sounds, unlike the inbuilt mic. Computer noise is also un-detectable and the output is full of nuance and sounds as good as audio books.

Very impressed and looking forward to using it for my gaming as well.

*** Pros ***
- Great value - bought at £27
- Easy to put the stand together, but also comes with clear instructions
- Worked with my iMac without any effort from me, simply plug and play
- Comes well boxed, with a warranty card and everything you need to get recording
- Stand makes it easy to move the Mic out of the way when not in use

*** Cons ***
- Would have liked a longer USB cable (cable supplied is 1.5 metres - I have a big desk)
- Sensitive to sound from several metres away (not as good as a dynamic cardioid mic)

*** Upgrades ***
- Bought the Neever pop filter at £7 to ensure the best quality (can notice an improvement with certain letters, like P and B

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as my Blue Snowball setup for gaming (and perhaps beginner streaming setup)

Overview
********************
Bought Black/Blue set for a friend as I was sick of him using a webcam mic and sounding like he was gaming from a toilet. Also set up slightly different every time we played so he'd be hardly audible and volume would be different which would mean everyone in the group re-calibrating their volumes to accommodate him. A pain. No more with this. He loves this set. And so do I.
Pros:
**********************
- I've had the Neweer arm myself for 18 months and it has and still works well (albeit the swivel at the base has to be set so it isn't screwed tight but not too loose either else the mic "leans" or can swivel on it's own, but once a balance has been found ((back off the screw one and a half turns from being "done up") it's great.
- It holds the mic firmly, wherever you put it until you want to move it again. Grab it move it, leave it. Done.
- This mic is comparable to the Blue Snowball over Steam and Discord compared to my more expensive (also USB) Blue Snowball (note, not the cheaper "ice" variant either). This is mostly what we use our setups for, so your results may vary depending on your application.
- This would be fine for recording voice overs for youtube vids etc. into Adobe/Soundforge/Windows Voice recorder/Cyberlink PowerDvd as a talk over device etc. or teamchat/conference calls on Skype/MS Teams/Discord etc.
- Good sound when listening to someone using it - not too bassy (it was to start but the volume in Windows properties was set simply too low by default) or overly tinny like every gaming headset I've used, owned or come across (sounds much more balanced that a Modmic for example)
- It's pure plug and play so no drivers needed (any windows version, I've used it on 7 and 10)
- Would be ideal for an affordable beginner's streaming solution
- no tools needed: desk clamp and arm screw are both designed to be done by hand
- can accommodate a desk thickness I'd guess to about 2 inches/5cm (maybe 1.5cm thicker but you'd want adequate screw thread free to be able to actually clamp it - any standard desk/table is EASILY accommodated)
- No additional hardware required (no external amp/powerbox required unlike non-USB 3.5mm variant)
- Unboxed, set up and fully working in less than ten minutes (win 10).
- No background hum or interference on USB (my Motherboard soundcard creates a tone of static and noise usign the MicIn 3.5mm jack so was forced into the USB route to negate the soundcard altogether). This would be great for getting round that issue too, if that applies to you. Or you have a laptop with a single headphone/mic port where you want to use both, a USB mic will solve your problem.
- 2 metre USB cable is standard (USB one end, the square variety at the other, like you'd use for a printer) so if a longer/replacement is needed it's a very cheap, straight swap. No proprietary nonsense here.
- Looks much more expensive than it is

Cons:
- Shame an all-black option doesn't exist - If you don't like the blue (or gold if you buy that) hide it with the Neweer pop filter (about £7) but unless you have the mic directly in front of your mouth and only several inches away, and are loudly pushing B and P noises into it with your articalted speaking, for my application anyway having it slightly off to one side, the pop filter is just cosmetic but an addition I added which I like.
- have to use use 'push to talk' if gaming (more a criticism of the desk mic vs gaming headset, rather than specifically to this mic). This mic will pick up any sound in the room including rustling of crisp packets/sweets/ mechanical keyboards or possibly a mouse farting at the end of the garden.
- If it's mounted on the desk and you hit or bump it (or use a force feedback steering wheel clamped to the same desk) your gaming/skype friends will hear every bump even louder than you do. The vibration of the knock will resonate through desk, then the arm and through the mic even though this has the holder (can't remember the technical name) to help minimise this (again a general criticism not specifically to this mic). If possible mount the arm on something next to the desk (shelf, set of drawers etc) to keep it separate/minimise this if this is something that might happen in your real world application then pull it over and push it away as you need it.

Conclusion:
*********************
If I was looking to buy a mic/arm setup now I'd get this Black/Blue combo over the USB Blue Snowball (which in itself is £60 without the arm).
Even at £31@Aug 2018, compared to other options out there this is a bargain which anyone can set up with zero PC/hardware knowledge other than what a USB connection on your PC looks like and which way a thumb screw needs to be turned to tighten it.
- will work in either a USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port (as USB 3.0 is backward compatible)

1. My Snowball, pop filter and this arm (just a representation of how the arm will look, this is NOT the mic that comes with this pack and the pop filter is an extra I bought, also not included)
2. My desk is 22mm thick so should give an idea if you measure your much thicker table to see if this might be suitable
