Pros -Can plug directly into a router for immediate expansion -Can tether via USB -Wireless transmission can be configured from 2.4 & 5GHz to 2.4 only, 5 only or you can completely disable it. Also allows for a guest connection. -full GUI for easy setup -Gigabit Hotspot - Can run without the battery, great for increasing longevity of the power pack as you can avoid constant/overcharging -integrates well with Nighthawk Routers -mobile -pay as you go -Data consumption tracker -Data Plan tracker -Can attach NAS or simply add a microSD card for instant NAS (good for cellphone/mobile backups)
Cons -When powering up without battery, from time to time it won't discover the wired connection. Easily fixed by booting up with battery inserted, then pulling it out after it has initiated.
-Every now and then a power cycle is needed to achieve max speeds.
You would think that a device like this that has been out for many months would have usable firmware on it, but there is clearly an issue with this device. I took this hotspot out to test today and several times, it would just all of a sudden crash and reboot. At some points, it was so bad that it just kept constantly rebooting and crashing to the point where it finally quit trying completely until I removed power and plugged it back in. I did not use it with the battery in, but tried it plugged into the provided USB charger as well as portable power packs. Same issue on all of those.
It seems that this crashing got bad particularly when I would connect my iPhone to it via WiFi. Some times, as soon as my iPhone connected, it would crash and reboot. It is incredible to me that after all these months, NETGEAR has released only 1 firmware update (which I updated my device to) on a device that clearly needs to be fixed so it is at least stable. That update clearly did not provide stable firmware. It is crazy that this device costs as much as it does, yet is horribly unreliable!
Will be returning this unit!
I decided to give this device another try recently. It appears that the issues I experienced back in 2019 have now been resolved. I noticed some posts online that Netgear had released firmware to fix the crashing issues on this device. Sure enough, I have been testing it now in October of 2020 and it is working great with no issues and is running the latest firmware!
These work great, when they work. The first one of mine died within 1 week. The 2nd one, which I am currently using, randomly reboots throughout the day. This is a known issue and apparently they have not corrected it yet. When I'm plugged in directly to power, it reboots constantly, it is unusable. When I am plugged into the USB via my computer, it reboots occasionally. Either constantly or occasionally is not acceptable for the price of the device. I looked around and can't find anything comparable for my needs, so I'm sending them back until I get one that works right. Luckily Amazon makes returns super easy and that part has not been a hassle.
Updated - returned 3 of 3. Had to go with another product due to router kept crashing constantly. Would not recommend.
Works great. Streams TV, accomodates desktop and cellphone internet simultaneously with no slowdown or drops in service. Consistent connectivity and smooth service. Easy to set up. Instructions are clear even for a novice. Provision the SIM, insert it, insert battery, wait for blue light, one-time connect to PC using ethernet cable (not supplied but any CAT6 cable will do) to login to Netgear site and account as shown on device, change password and name wireless account, disconnect ethernet cable, look for newly named WAP on one's wireless devices and login using the password you just created, and one is off and running. This device works exactly as advertised. Great solution for rural areas.
I purchased this router from this seller in August 2018. By the first week in December, the product failed. The router kept up a continuous cycle of shutting itself off and rebooting. (Yes, I checked to see if there was a firmware update. There wasn't.) I contacted the seller, Electronics-Plus, who said that they wouldn't replace it since it had been more than 45 days since I purchased it. They referred me to contact NetGear directly, since the issue seemed to be a manufacturing defect. After 2 phone calls with NetGear, they determined they couldn't help me because I didn't purchase the router directly from the manufacturer (even though I purchased it through a company I believed was an authorized retailer). So I reached back out to the seller and after several heated emails, they finally agreed to send me a "refurbished" router, if I sent back the original.
Fast-forward to 2 and a half months later, and the same problem is occurring again. I reached back out to the seller yet again, but have not received a response as of the time of this review. Not surprised.
I work remotely and travel full-time so it's vital that I have reliable internet. Don't get me wrong, the product is AMAZING... when it works. But to spend $300.00 on a router (now on my second one) and to only have it last a couple of months is ridiculous.
I was able to walk into Best Buy today and purchased this router not only for **$100** CHEAPER than what this seller offers, but I also got the Geek Squad 2-year Replacement Warranty for only $30.00. That means when (not IF) this router goes out, I'll be able to walk right back in to any Best Buy location and get a replacement for FREE.
Overall, I highly recommend this product. Truly, it's amazing. Ours runs off AT&T's network and we've never had a single issue with it. We do have a signal booster in case we are in a more rural area with weak tower coverage; but we've been able to stream Netflix, YouTube, and even play games online without any issues! But I should've done my research beforehand and purchased this router from BestBuy the first time around. I wasted $300 purchasing from this seller since they don't offer a warranty and the product doesn't work due to a manufacturer defect that the manufacturer doesn't cover either.
Conclusion: GREAT product (just be sure to get it from an authorized retailer that offers a warranty!) AWFUL seller - AVOID AT ALL COSTS.
I had to return both the M1 hotspot routers we purchased. We obtained special AT&T DataConnect data enabled SIM cards. We are an engineering company, and needed hotspot devices for our field use. Whenever our laptops or cellphones connect to the M1 router, the device reboots instantly, and kicks you out of connection. We even called Netgear about the issue and opened a support ticket. But they never followed up with us despite us calling them and giving them the opportunity to resolve the problems. In the end, we got tired of waiting, so we returned the items. Terrible experience. Don't buy the M1 Nighthawk router.
