From the manufacturer
Covering all angles, this powerful 16.7x wide-angle to super-telephoto zoom easily captures most scenes so you don’t have to change lenses. From group shots and vast landscapes to portrait and distant natural subjects, you can shoot sharp, colour-rich photos and video without compromise. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR is built to offer maximum flexibility and portability without sacrificing image quality, thanks to the sophisticated optical and mechanical design. By suppressing the open aperture at the maximum telephoto position to f/6.3, Nikon’s engineers were able to realise a more compact and lighter, result than the larger AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–5.6G ED VR.
Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR
With incredible reach in a remarkably compact body, the powerful AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR lens is designed to cover every imaginable shooting situation. Crafted to draw good results from high-resolution DX-format D-SLRs and equipped with enhanced technology the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR lens is optimal for enthusiastic photographers. This truly versatile all-in-one lens is ideal when you want to travel light and still capture diverse perspectives. So for those keen on travel, amateur sports or wildlife photography, a compact ''walkabout'' lens like this is an optimal choice.
Providing high optical performance, the lens comprises 16 elements in 12 groups, in a design with three ED glass and three aspherical lens elements. The ED and aspherical elements work together to effectively manage the risk of aberrations that can occur with super-zoom lenses, resulting in images of high-resolution and superior contrast. For a soft rendering effect the iris diaphragm has seven rounded blades, producing high-quality natural backgrounds.
Smooth and Steady
Equipped with Nikon’s Vibration Reduction system, this super-zoom delivers clear, blur-free images, whether you’re taking a wide-angle group portrait in low light or zooming in to capture distant subjects. Designed to enable more stable handheld shooting, Nikon’s VR technology lets you shoot at slower shutter speeds, without the image-degrading blur that can be caused by camera shake. The optical VR system also stabilises the viewfinder image for more accurate autofocus acquisition and framing, even when shooting handheld at the super-telephoto end of the range.
Nikon''s AF-S technology is yet another reason why professional photographers like NIKKOR lenses. Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) converts travelling waves into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that is accurate and super quiet. So for discrete shooting you can set up the shot in an instant and camera focusing won’t disturb sensitive subjects like wildlife.
The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR lens was built with lasting durability and portability in mind. Weighing in at an economical 550 g, which is light for a lens with this kind of range, the handling is exceptional and optimal for photographers on the move. Allowing for a more compact design, Nikon''s Internal focus (IF) technology limits all the optical movement to the interior of the non-extending lens barrel enabling a closer focusing distance. With a weather-sealed mount protecting both the lens and camera from dust and water and a zoom-lock switch to prevent the lens from moving under its own weight during transportation, this lens really is an optimal travelling companion for your D-SLR.
Answering the demand for a powerful, all-in-one lens, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18–300 mm f/3.5–6.3G ED VR is lightweight, compact, and ready to capture wonderfully diverse scenes with ease.
The actual focal length of 18-300 mm has an angle of view equivalent to that of a 27-450 mm lens in 35 mm format.

1. It is very compact and therefore lightweight lens
2. Focusing is almost instant
3. There is a manual focus wheel which can even be used when autofocus is on
4. With it being an 18 mm to 300 mm lens it means less need to keep changing lenses
I bought this lens basically because I got fed up of constantly changing between the bog standard Nikon 18mm to 55mm lens and a pretty good Tamron 70 mm to 300 mm lens. Ok so I may be comparing apples and oranges here but at 300mm the Tamron actually zooms in more than this lens. This also means you get a much closer shot in macro mode with the Tamron. The difference is quite significant so it's a little surprising and a little disappointing.
I need to check things out a little more but that initial excitement has dissipated by a small amount. I'll keep the lens as I need the convenience more than anything.
UPDATE: I took some shots recently in low light with this lens at 300mm (equivalent to somewhere around 140mm on the Tamron 70-300mm lens) and I noticed how quickly things darkened. So I did a test with both lens and the light difference is amazing, the Tamron winning out easily. This Nikon lens is just shockingly bad. I really wish I'd bought something else but I think too much time has passed now. Basically I would not recommend this lens unless you want only two things, the quietness and speed of the focus. This lens does very little else well. I'm going to save up again for an alternative then sell this as quickly as possible.
Yes, separate 18-55mm and 55 to 200/300mm may be cheaper and lighter, but for sheer convenience, this is a better option in my opinion. Well recommended.
Attaching a few photos from a single trip to illustrate: the Lake is taken from a moving vehicle at 1/4000s, the Tawang Monastery zoomed in at 140mm, the Rhino at 300mm from the back of an elephant, the Orchids an example of bokeh at 65mm.
I've also put in the last two images taken in low light conditions with the same lens, different trip: the painting of Vajrapani at 1/13s shutter speed and the Chaitya cave at 1/50s shutter speed. All photos hand held.
Easily the best lens to carry for travel.
Unfortunately i have had recurring fungus and doubly unfortunate was in China without my warranty forms. The fungus was cleaned but unfortunately returned and after a second attempt to clean it Nikon Xian said it required sending to Beijing where they had the machine to apparently clean inside the barrel properly.
They quoted me a 160 pounds and a month to do it, unfortunately since then Nikon UK have assessed and the entire barrel needs replacing at a qhote of 600 pounds. I would love to buy this lens again but would need to address whether the fungus has been an issue with other 18-300 owners or just a particular catalyst event and inappropriate care on my part.
This review was for the first 18-300m that came out and I bought in 2012...it had spectacular results esp when many of my shots were taken in Morocco in a moving car at 100km or out and about in public areas or in low light...as said in the specs it has all weather protection but I got recurring fungus in it and after it being cleaned several times by nikon china, nikon UK quoted £600 to replace the barrel. I bought the new edition 18-300mm -6.3 and just can't get anywhere near the same satisfaction. Totally unhappy with it. Photos are not sharp unless full light/well lit day.
Bought for my fiancee to replace her Nikon 18 200 which broke. She is very pleased with the lens and loves the extra reach . She is starting to get the feel for it and the 1st lot of her photographs taken on her camera using the lens look pretty good. She is just starting out on her Photography journey and still learning so this lens will help her photographs to get better.
It takes time to get the best out of any lens so I'm really looking forward to seeing some great images from her in the future
