5.0 out of 5 stars For Fans and for Newcomers
By Jamie on 13 October 2021
I've played most of the past Metroid games, but I recognise that this game was designed with newcomers in mind — and both groups will have a blast.

An overall amazing Metroidvania experience that proves why the Metroid series was capable of kickstarting a genre. You don't need to have played the older instalments to enjoy it, as the game opens with a recap of the past few games. Movement and controls are extremely fluid and satisfying, and the Switch hardware allows for some cutscenes and sequences that are just a spectacle to behold. There's nothing really to complain about, because it's the best possible modern rendition of the Metroid format we could've got.

Graphics: crisp and detailed.
Story: a satisfying twist and ending to this arc spanning 35 years.
Gameplay: satisfying and responsive (not super floaty and slow like the older instalments)

I recommend this to all Switch owners.

(PS. I saw another review saying that the sounds from the game alarmed their dog — this was not true in my case, and I own two dogs. Of course, that could just be an anomaly, but there are no sounds that personally disturbed me or my pets.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfection of the formula Metroid invented
By James Fettes on 11 October 2021
Metroid Dread is punishing, frustrating, and unforgiving. It's also one of the best games I've played this year. Everything fans love about Metroid is here: the exploration, tightly graphed enemies, and ruthless boss fights. After decades, Metroid remains fresh and addictive. The developers have added just enough—especially the E.M.M.I.s, which hunt Samus through specific areas of the map—to keep the game feeling both fresh and familiar. You may die a lot (I certainly have), but that won't stop you. Strongly recommended.
