I only ever used an original Gamecube controller a few times as I never owned the system but a few mates did, but this is exactly as I remembered it. The buttons are plasticy and clicky. The controller is very sturdy and robust and the divots in the joysticks are perfectly placed. They've allowed the ability to swap the C stick for a joystick head, and even allowed the left joystick to be swapped out if you really wanted to do that.
After getting used to the "gamecube" layout, which for Smash doesn't take long at all, but for other Switch games it may do, it is such a good controller. I preferred this over a wireless model as I wouldn't use it in tabletop or standalone mode, and would always use it when docked or as a spare controller when I had friends round.
This controller is perfect for my 5 year old to learn how to play with due to its durability, and is actually my go to controller when docked now instead of the joycons.
I have even ordered the Luigi green version as an additional so both me and my boy can use the controller at the same time, it's that good!
