4.0 out of 5 starsNot like ‘Eliminator’ or ‘Afterburner’.

Unsurprisingly this is as it says a collection of the band playing the blues from their albums 1972 to 1990. The first track starts off sounding like something from ‘Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac’ before being given a touch of ZZ Top. If you are unfamiliar with the band’s output before ‘Eliminator’ then you might be surprised at how they sounded then, somewhat less commercial. Probably the best-known track from that era is ‘My Head’s in Mississippi’. If you want to hear the band in blues mode, then this is as good as any. Playing time: just under 66 ¼ mins.
Like it says on title, this is a compilation of ZZ's more outright bluesy numbers. There is not a single poor track on this album in my opinion. I bought it simply for the car as I already own all of ZZ's albums. If I was going to put together my own mix of more blues like ZZ numbers, it would pretty much be exactly the same as this, so for the price I was happy to throw a few more pennies into Billy's, Dusty's and Frank's pockets. The opening track Brown Sugar has to be one of their absolute best. Highly recommended.

The best ZZ Top album, one of the best blues albums. Rev Gibbons at the top of his game. If you think you know ZZ Top then this album will certainly challenge your perceptions of the band.
