Through my Bookstagram account (@dahlias_booktography) many people have sent me book recommendations. Among these requests, Armentrout has been one of the more popular authors. So, I decided to give this book a go. I noticed that she had high ratings and so my expectations were set rather high.
After a friend of mine on Instagram suggested I start with the Lux series, I went ahead and purchased Obsidian. The cover is nice! A very cool design that the author could take pride in.
Obsidian starts with a girl called Katy. She has recently moved to a small town in West Virginia. And hates it. The reason for the move was due to the death of Katy's father. Her mother wanted a new start and voila, they settled in Ketterman.
I loved the mum character, Kellie Swartz. She was sweet and a delight to read, unfortunately she wasn't in much of the novel.
When Katy's mum encourages her to make friends, Katy goes next door. In a shirt that says: MY BLOG IS BETTER THAN YOUR VLOG. This does not set a good impression with the attractive and arrogant next door neighbour. Not that he cares about vlogs or blogs, he just thinks the shirt is dumb.
Every time this neighbour, aptly named Daemon, showed up, I cringed. And no, he doesn't have a brother called Stefan but Damon Salvatore and Daemon Black could almost be twins in attitude.
However, Katy makes friends with Daemon's sister, Dee. Dee is adorable! Not only is she kind and friendly, she is also willing to help Katy out with anything she needs. They quickly become friends.
And I mean very quickly. The pacing and sense of time throughout Obsidian is lacking greatly. Half of the time I was reading, I felt as if I was flicking through a dull account of someones day-to-day life. This does not interest me whatsoever. I felt disconnected from the characters and plot. Armentrout favoured passive voice over active voice and I cannot abide by that!
So, why is it that I truly cannot stand Daemon? Well, maybe it is more that I cannot stand Katy...
Even though Daemon is hopelessly mean and smug, Katy still adores everything about him. She notes that he is attractive, and this is all well-and-good, as they say, but he is nothing more. He claims to hate her yet constantly appears, mostly to tell her what to do or what not to do. He is creepy and has nothing better to do than try to control Katy's life. From the start! And, for most of this book, I could not remember Daemon or Katy's name. I felt no connection, I could not have cared less about their lives.
On another note, early on in the novel, Katy becomes suspicious of the twins. Dee and Daemon are different. People around them either love them, fear them or hate them. And strange circumstances make Katy question who, or what, they really are. I will leave the details out so as not to spoil the book for others. However, I have to note that according to Daemon, no one knows who or what they are. Even though they all appear to...
As Daemon rescues Katy again and again, some weird bond starts to grow between them. Not love. Not even like. Maybe...a begrudging acceptance?
This wishy-washy behaviour brings me to my next point: was an editor hired throughout the writing process?
Not just a copy editor but a content editor, line editor or proofreader...
Info-dumps, misspelled words, repeated words, unnecessary words...the list goes on and on. And maybe this is why I couldn't connect with the story. Take this quote for example:
[ “It was like touching the surface of the sun without being burned.” ]
If it was like touching the sun, then Katy would get burned. She wouldn't even get to the surface before burning up.
[ “...not human, but otherworldly...” ]
This is a given. If they are not human then they are clearly otherworldly – when referring to something that has a humanoid appearance.
[ “...vocab...” ]
This issue might just be a style-choice but it made me cringe. The first thing one learns about editing is to write the whole word. Unless the character says the word “vocab”, it should be written as “vocabulary.”
Obsidian is full of sentences that don't quite make sense. Armentrout relies heavily on cliches and similes. She also did not develop her characters during the book apart from an unexplained circumstance where a sweet guy became an alcoholic and potential rapist for no other reason than to move the plot along.
Now...enough of the editing lesson...
I would like to think I have merely judged Obsidian harshly due to the editorial issues but it is more than that. The characters are, for the most part, dull. They lack the realism that is needed to truly engage the reader.
Not only this but the plot was also dull. After reading the blurb, I was thrilled! I thought it would be great because it was a fun idea! Unfortunately, I will not be continuing with this series in the near future. Though I will be purchasing other books by this author.

This book is AMAZING!
Obsidian was the first JLA book that I read and I have never turned back. I now own every single one of them.
The world, the characters, the storyline, everything is perfect and leaves you with an action packed novel filled with mystery, snark and teenage drama.
I have read this series COUNTLESS times and still manage to have a laugh every time.
Katy is a dedicated book blogger who moves to a new town with her mum for a fresh start after the death of her father.
Daemon is sexy and rude boy next door that Katy unfortunately asks for directions. Their love/hate relationship keeps you on your toes and keeps you hanging onto every word from the first page to the last!
I would recommend this series to anyone who likes YA Sci-Fi/paranormal, it's along the lines of Twilight with a lot more snark!

I picked this up to see if is was reasonable for my daughter (12yrs). Well it sucked me right in. I don't normally read paranormal books, they aren't really my thing (I did read twilight but thats it). This however is pretty awesome.
I will let my daughter read it merely because she is very mature and has read the twilight series. There is nothing in here that made me think she would need clarification on anything. There is chemistry between the couple but they are limited in what they actually do (as a mum thats always nice to know).
I found myself curious and engaged in the world that Armentrout created. The characters are believable, they have flaws and yes Daemon can be a dick but he means well.
It has similarities to other books in the genre but these days i think it is hard not to compare books and find something similar in them.

I was keen to read this given all the positive reviews. But the story never really grabbed me. Several places were rushed and choppy in terms of timescale e.g. On one line it would be one day and on the next line a few weeks later. I also thought the relationship between Katy and Daemon was underdeveloped and thus not convincing enough. Overall, this book reminded me a lot of Twilight.

The first in an exciting, fast-paced, vividly imagined and non-stop page-turning series. Highly recommended for not only YA readers. I couldn't put the first novel down, and (if you're so inclined) the next three are equally good.

A great introduction to this series. It's very well portrayed and the funny end left me wanting for more. Luckily, I don't have to wait for the next book.
This Science Fiction revolves around the Luxians who have settled on earth. Only a select few know of their existence. Katy has just relocated to this remote location, and this is where she meets her frenemy, Daemon.
Daemon and Katy are always at loggerheads. He is ever so rude to her, but could he be using this attitude to hide other feelings?
The story flows very well and is beautifully developed. The Aliens are interesting and unusual characters. I became totally engrossed in this well paced story and cannot wait to see where it goes from here.

I did enjoy this book but it wasn't by any means perfect. Someone whose reviews I follow on GoodReads said that this book was pretty much like the author had decided to re-write Twilight. The thing is, some parts were too familiar: a new girl in a small town, inexplicable group of people that are ostracised by 'normal' people, hot/cold male lead, and the girl always seeming to find herself in perilous situations that could have easily been avoided or foreseen.
What carries this book for me is the dialogue. It's snappy and sharp. And whilst I didn't always like Daemon, the chemistry between him and Katy is brilliant. And I loved his sister, Dee, too. And I liked Katy's other friends, even if there wasn't much development of them.
What I also like is that Katy is essentially one of us. A blogger. An avid reader. And she is relatable and in that respect, likeable.
This was a fun read and I'm already onto the next.

A Great YA Read!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 September 2015Verified Purchase
This is the first book in the Lux series. I loved it!
Katy is a normal, everyday teen, who also happens to be an avid reader, book blogger and reviewer. She is full of angst after moving to West Virginia with her mother after the death of her father. I liked her a lot, though her (sometimes) bitchy inner monologue, as well as her constant swooning over Daemon grated on me at times. After meeting Daemon, her new next door neighbour, things begin to get interesting.
I bought this book (in paperback format) from http://Amazon.com way back in 2013 (though there seems to be no record of it in my account now?), as I had heard good things about it. Unfortunately, due to my rather large reading list, I have only recently been able to read it.
I began to read and was quickly hooked; I managed to read this book in one sitting. The story is told from Katy's point of view (in first person). This gives the reader the opportunity to watch things unfold from Katy's perspective. I really liked this, but often wondered what Daemon was thinking or feeling. However, reading between the lines, I got an impression of Daemon's character. He can be a total arrogant jerk, but he can also be a caring person. I must admit that I felt like slapping him a time or two myself, but I also realised why he was acting the way he was - he was protecting not only himself but his family too.
In a way, this story reminded me of my favourite YA TV programme as a teen, Roswell, which was also based on a series of books. You have a gorgeous guy, who happens to be an alien, and a teenage girl who lands herself into trouble. Throw in a lonely sister and you have a recipe for an exciting YA adventure/romance. Speaking of Dee, I liked her a lot more than Daemon. She is enthusiastic and bubbly, nothing like her sterner twin. The story is a little predictable if you have read a lot of similar YA stories *cough* Twilight *cough*, but if you are new to this genre, this has to be one of the best books to begin with. There are several twists and turns that kept me riveted from beginning to end, and the ending left me wanting to keep reading. I am hoping to read the next book in the series as soon as I can. Hopefully, it won't be another two or three years; it's sitting on my bookshelf, staring at me, so I had better get a move on and read it!
Jennifer Armentrout has written a fantastic YA romance. I love her fast paced writing style. The dialogue is sharp and snappy, though some of the characters are not as well developed as they could have been. However, the flow is wonderful and scenes flowed seamlessly from one into another. I would definitely consider adding this author onto my favourite authors list, and I will be reading more of her books in the future.
I highly recommend this book to teens aged 14+, and to adults who love reading books in the YA genre. - Lynn Worton

Obsidian is a brilliant face paced action packed book, katy moves with her mum to find she has a hot and sexy next door neighbour who's totally arrogant and cocky and moody, he also has a little sister dee who has taking a liking to katy and daemon not very happy with this arrangement.
As daemon seems to be trying to find ways of hanging out with katy to find out what she all about, katy starts to get suspicious after in counting a weird arum that's after her after daemon has left katy a glow up light bulb after using his powers around her.
After this things get pretty interesting this was a fantastic and brillient paced book that left you wanting more, if your into hot aliens and high school and action this this is the book and series for you.

I recently finished watching the show Roswell and wanted a story with the same sort of feel..this book didn't disappoint, the chemistry between the two min characters was brilliant and the story wasn't predictable which I find with a lot of books .
I would definitely recommend this book and I'm looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
