To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
So hard to rate this. I wanted to like it - I have enjoyed her ideas on "The Best Thing I Ever Ate". I never watched the other shows that featured her. There is too much deep fat frying - something I do not do because of the mess and heartburn it creates. There is an underlying arrogance (she knows so much more than we mere home cooks could ever hope to know) that is off putting. When I saw her recipe for Beef Meatballs and Sauce, I realized that she did not know anything that we, the experienced and adventurous home cook, know. It should have been one star, maybe, but... Maybe there will be one recipe in this book that looks interesting and different. Oh, man - something else I need to say! I collect cookbooks, I have over 400 - so few recipes are really new to me. Hers are not new; in fact they are weak reproductions of the same old, same old. Okay - the rating is changing from two stars to one.
I have to rate this as a 1 star for safety reasons. I attempted to make the roasted squash soup (pg. 45). The recipe states, "Cover the squash halves somewhat snugly with foil and carefully put the baking sheet(s) in the oven. Add about an inch of water to the baking sheet(s) to create steam while the squash bakes in the oven. Bake for 1 1/2 to 2 hours....Remove from the oven. Carefully peel back the foil and set aside to cool".
Baking sheets are NOT the tool to use for this! I suffered deep second degree burns on my stocking foot while removing the baking sheet out of the oven. The water spilled from the corner of the baking sheet. Its been six weeks, I still can't put a shoe on. This is not to mention the pain of daily dressing changes twice per day and a near skin graft. I've written the publishing company and heard nothing. I tried to contact Alex via facebook on her restaurant web page. Unfortunately, I've heard nothing. All I want is for the recipe to be reviewed and edited. This has been a horrible experience.
