2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing ... And I have my reasons
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 June 2020
I waited quite a while to decide on having this oneplus 8 phone. Amazon offered a great price reduction at £539 I couldn't resist.

Sadly I have returned the following due to the following reasons:

It over heated. Shut down various applications, lost a document I was working on. Later it sent a message that I could now return to normal use as "the phones temperature has been restored" apparently this is to be expected on this phone? Really? A brand new phone, gets too hot and switches itself off. I was creating a document, not preparing a BBQ on it.

If you want it for the 48mp camera, you need to know you have to choose that setting when you take a photo and it won't allow you to use zoom.

There are also issues with zooming into text on the web and some pages don't allow this option.

The refresh rate is amazing, however it drains the battery if you have it set to 90Hz

The screen was not as clear as my OnePlus 5t.

There is no LED notification light for messages. I knew that when I purchased the phone, but it's a disappointing set back.

The offer of lights around the outer edge whilst charging didn't work.

It's a heavy phone.

It arrived without a screen protector, which isn't a big issue but not helpful.

I was disappointed with the over all phone. I have hoped to remain a OnePlus customer, but this new phone isn't for me.

Perhaps I've been spoilt with all the features I have on my OnePlus 5T for the last 2 years.

I shall be keeping that phone forever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Few quirks but absolutely worth 5 stars on offer at £350.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 March 2021
I'm moving from my 4 year old Samsung S8 after the battery life depleted to the point where I can't get through half a day and there's no simple user-replaceable option like the 'good old days'. I've not used a OnePlus since my original OnePlus 1, which is what I had before the S8. So now you know what angle I'm coming from.

I always told myself that I would not buy a phone without a 3.5mm audio jack, which i used nightly, I never liked the idea of a hole-punch camera display, and I really like wireless charging. The OnePlus 8 misses on all three of these points that I originally felt were important, however I would still rate it at a solid 5 out of 5. Why? You may ask, simply because I bought the phone on an Amazon offer at £349 and at that price point, even with my preferences considered, it's an absolute bargain that I would not hesitate to recommend.

I'm one of those weird people who would rather not have a camera pointing at me all day and prefer to use a sliding lens cover, obviously this is far too disruptive to be able to do on this phone as it would normally block a large area of screen - but I have found that there is a software setting to artificially lower the top of the screen below the level of the hole punch, so that's one issue sorted if I want to do that. I use 3.5mm headphones from my phone every night to avoid issues with earphone battery running out, and I thought that I would be able to use a USBc to 3.5mm adaptor and carry on doing this, however this phone does not support wireless charging so I have to compromise between having plugged in earphones or being able to charge my phone overnight. I've not quite settled on a new routine here, so at the moment I'm trying to find earphones with a 12hr battery life.

With the screen, even at 90hz, I'm seeing more fringing when scrolling white text on a black background than I saw on my S8 - particularly in OLED mode of Relay for Reddit where I think the pixels are turned off when black(?).

Also, the camera setup is truly weird. It's referred to as a triple camera, but the default macro one is just.... trash. It would have been better not to include it, so if you disregard that and consider it a dual camera system you can't be disappointed. The wide angle lens introduces some distortion which it tries to correct for in software, it work fine at a distance but causes some loss of sharpness to anything close.

The box includes a charger, a clear silicone grip case with a dimpled inside surface and a raised 'never settle' lettering set on the rear. The phone I received was the correct IN2013 model for my area, and the phone came pre-fitted with a soft screen protection film (WOOHOO!) The screen protector has a few deformations that are visible when the light catches it juuuuust right, and the protector has a hole punch for the camera but it's not centred over the camera lens and my eye notices this constantly, but I'd much rather accept these than have to try and fit one perfectly myself as this is never easy and I presume the factory has a dust-free environment that I can't easily replicate. So glad the film is pre-installed - worth it's weight in gold!

These are all absolutely minor niggles and not complaints befitting a £350 phone. If you don't mind changing your routine slightly to suit the quirks of the hardware then this is a solid recommendation from me.
