This book leads with evidence for the whole food plant based diet. Unfortunately the author chose to bash Christians in the process. His misfortune to be so narrow sighted. There are plenty of us Christians onboard with the whole food plant based diet. However, the book still deserves a 5 star rating. I believe we are a society that does not see ourselves as being accountable for our own health and many would prefer to have the government provide for them, even blind-sighted to the false advertising of what they should eat. Kudos for the outstanding recipes!
This book was an easy, enjoyable read. Glen Merzer does a very good job using by research, quotes from authority, and his own wit to make some very important points about nutrition, a plant-based diet (and not a junk food vegan diet) and the end of the book has some very good recipes. Highly recommended to anyone already eating plant-based, and more especially to anyone considering a switch, but really needing validation that it is right way to live from a purely health standpoint (setting aside the cruelty and pollution you are helping with).
Informative book written with a good sense of humor. Very well backed up premises fir those wanting to improve their health, learn what a whole food plant based lifestyle is about, or help a vegan reboot their mindset. Recipes are easy and delicious.
As other reviewers have said, it's genuinely fun to read. "Own Your Health" includes both some stories of the positive benefits of a whole-food, plant-based diet from Merzer's life as well as covering science and evidence to support it. Although I have my own stories and have done my own research, adding Merzer's take helped re-enforce and extend what I knew, helping me make better food choices in my own home and be a more effective advocate to others. There was one class of examples I found particularly compelling: Glen covers cases of vegetarian and vegans who had health concerns, then shows how being stricter about a whole foods approach that made a significant difference for them.
I’m a lifelong omnivore, but this book makes a compelling case to eschew the pleasures of the flesh. Although not himself a scientist, the author offers lots of scientific evidence that a plant based diet is the way to better health. His argument is peppered with personal anecdotes and laugh out loud humor, unexpected ingredients in a pro-vegan stew.
The second part of the book is a compilation of recipes by Chef AJ. Since I just finished reading, I haven’t yet tried any. They look simple, most with ingredients I like, and not scary. That’s a good start for a culinary cretin like me.
So overall, this book offers what may be a much needed one, two punch to the gut. It may hurt at first, but also may prolong your life.
I learned so much more than why switching to a plant based diet is good for my health. The science Merzer quotes is easy to follow and the disclosure about how little education Dr's get about nutrition was a sad surprise to read. Glen illustrates with humor and straight forward honesty why it's so important to ask physicians questions. This book gives you the information you need to be a smart consumer not just of food but of advice. The chapter about how Joanna goes about treating her symptoms of digestive and joint pain is an illuminating exploration of self healing with some help from the experts. The whole book has something to offer anyone who just wants to feel better, make the planet more sustainable and eat some good food.
Merzer was preaching to the choir for me as I follow a whole food plant based lifestyle. His story is a compelling one nonetheless. Chef AJ's recipes are delicious and varied; I have her other books as well and follow her YouTube channel. If you care about your health, read this book to find out how to "Own Your Health!"
I LOVED this book. It was funny, relatable, and created a clear argument that a whole-food, plant-based diet is the way to go if you value your health. You'll be so entertained by the writing that you won't realize you're learning. The recipes by Chef AJ are delicious. Have you ever had a bagel made out of potatoes? Get ready to and then keep eating your way to health. Thank you Glen and Chef AJ!
Glenn's story is excellent, but it's for Chef AJ's recipes that I purchased this book. How disappointing to find page after page falling out from the moment I opened it. Very little is bound together. And this makes it frustrating to use. I should have returned it for another copy, but I was; intent on trying AJ's recipes.
