Very special
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 November 2021Verified Purchase
The critic, David Hurwitz, drew my attention to this set - I believe that he considers it the greatest set of Mozart piano concertos. I already have e.g. the Murray Perahia, Uchida/Tate, Brendel/Marriner, Buchbinder, and Anda sets. I was not especially attracted by the idea of Andras Schiff, who is a great pianist, but I tend to prefer a more individual style. (I have the same feelings about Perahia.) But I gave the set a go. To my surprise, it is for me unquestionably the greatest set of Mozart piano concertos I have heard, with Uchida/Tate a clear next in line. What makes this set so very special? First, the conducting of Vegh is beyond praise. Hurwitz is correct in his comments that conducting of such superlative quality makes a big difference. Second, Schiff's rather subtle style complements an orchestra conducted with a more individual style than is typical. It is wonderful playing. Unlike most sets in which the orchestra is very much the accompanist, here the piano and orchestra are equal partners. Like Uchida/Tate, Schiff/Vegh never lose sight of the strong melancholic element in these concertos. I have never heard concertos 13, 14, 15, 16 18, 25, and 26 performed so well. Absolutely wonderful!

Wonderfully Appropriate Interpretations
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 December 2012Verified Purchase
Differences of opinion make the world go around, but I cannot fathom some of the poor reviews of this excellent set. Schiff here produces what I think he believes the composer intended, a thoughtful balanced melodic interpretation. OK you may prefer Brendel's more at times heavy handed style or go with Uchida's super occasionally overblown flow, but this set gives you the best all round knowledge and understanding of the work. The Camerata Academica Salzburg, under Vegh's outstanding direction, are the perfect vehicle for Schiff's style.

Puro Mozart en ambiente reservado y selecto
Reviewed in Spain on 31 October 2014Verified Purchase
