I decided to upgrade to the PS4 Pro since i needed to buy red dead redemption 2 anyways. And right out of the box, as soon as i turned it on, this thing was very loud!! and then about 10 minutes in i smell something burning. checked the console first and sure enough it was extremely hot!!! Well i placed my floor fan right next to the console and continued on with installing red dead redemption 2, which was about an hour and then downloaded the patch update
which was close to 2 hours (3 GBs, i have terrible internet, i know) Turned it off for 30 minutes before playing the game, because my thought process was 'wow i should probably let this thing rest before firing up RDR2'.
Turned it on to begin playing and again, extremely loud fan + hot within 3 minutes! I said screw it I'm going to continue playing anyways. and this all went fine. played for about 3 and half hours then got sleepy and went to sleep. Woke up this morning, started up the RDR2 App and within 2 minutes of playing, a message popped up saying "PS4 too hot. Turn off the PS4 until the temperature goes down" - and then automatically on its own self turns off!!! So I waited 5 minutes then tried again. Fired up RDR2 again. didn't even make it to the menu before this happened again. Extremely frustrated at this point. Gave it 10 minutes plus put a chunk of ice in a bag on it, then tried again and didn't even make it past the whole "the PS4 wasn't turned off properly last time" blah blah blah message that we all know (from lights going out/ etc)
I looked it up online and apparently this has been an issue for others ever since the PS4 Pro even came out!!!! and from the looks of it, i guess i have just been giving a bad unit?
I'm returning this and getting my money back.
Really not sure what I wanna do now.. just keep the money and play RDR2 on my old PS4 or try again with another PS4 Pro?! i really wanted to enjoy gaming in 4k.
edit: also when packing up the PS4 back into it's box for return, from the back of the console I can smell it's burnt up.
I spent 2 days troubleshooting this console. First by looking on internet and forums. I reinstalled the firmware three times from a USB drive. I contacted my ISP and spent many hours speaking with them just to be sure it was not anything on the router settings or on my end. I plugged my PS4 Slim back in and it runs perfectly on 6.02. Finally as a last result I asked my brother to bring over his older PS4 Pro and it worked effortlessly on my WiFi.
Not sure why Sony wouldn't do a better job quality testing their system updates before rolling them out. Very unhappy that Sony would send out consoles that immediately don't work when you update to 6.02. I've been a PlayStation fan since the very first console. But this has made me weary. I'm going back to using my PS4 Slim as that doesn't have any issues.
