I bought a pair of these to stain 150 linear feet of 5' cedar fence. Could have sprayed but may have needed to brush in the stain anyway because of the rough texture of cedar boards. I expected to use both before the project was over, but only needed one since the brush cleaned up well and the bristles did not splay or wear. There are 3" brushes around that are thicker and therefore have more bristles, but I found this thickness to hold enough paint and was easier to use sideways over rougher sections as well as spreading stain on the flat side. For the record, I was using solid waterproof stain that looks very much like paint and needs careful application to completely cover the old cover. One coat did it, a measure of the quality of the stain and the brush I applied it with.
I needed some one-use brushes to apply brushing putty (it's like super-thick primer) to some cabinet doors I'm refinishing. You can't clean that stuff out of a brush, it's recommended to use inexpensive brushes and toss them. These were $8.99 for 2, I couldn't find any 3" brushes locally for less than that. These actually put down a decent finish so I am going to experiment with them when I brush on the final thin primer coat. I used these with an oil-based product and they didn't appear to lose ANY bristles while I was using them.
