Rachel Walsh is 27 and the miserable owner of size 8 feet. She has regular congress with Luke Costello, a man who wears his leather trousers tight. And she's fond - some might say too fond - of recreational drugs.
Until, that is, everything goes pear-shaped and she finds herself being frog-marched to the Cloisters - Dublin's answer to the Betty Ford Clinic. She's outraged. Surely she's not thin enough to be an addict?
Rachel isn't expecting plump, middle-aged men in brown jumpers, and more group therapy than you can shake a stick at. Heartsick and Lovesick, she seeks redemption in the shape of Chris - a man who might be more trouble than he's worth.

5 stars for an engaging, thoughtful, honest story of reality, non-reality, addiction, relationships and healing. Beautifully written and hard to put down.

My favourite Marian book! I've lost count of how many times I've read it over the years. Marian's books are like catching up with an old friend.

Fantastic journey with this book, totally caught me by surprise as it addressed some important issues subtly.

A very overrated novel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 March 2020Verified Purchase
Having heard this novel being discussed on Radio 4 - and apparently greatly appreciated - I was looking forward to reading it myself. How wrong could I be! The unlikeable heroine, the tedious plot, and the laboured “humour”, coupled with a very slow moving narrative, made for a very dull read, and I’m afraid I didn’t finish it. I don’t like to review a novel I haven’t finished, but I was so irritated by this novel that I felt compelled to write this. I know the author is both successful and very popular, and maybe I’m missing something, but I’m afraid I shan’t be reading another of her novels. Very disappointing.

My favourite book

This was my first Marian Keyes book, it was recommended by my mum who read it when it was first released and still now raves about it. For such a hard subject to address and write about, Marian did an amazing job. It made me laugh, it made me cry and I was gripped the whole time. I started it thinking it would just be romance novel but it was so much more than that and the way she wrote about addiction was spot on. One thing I find about Marian's books is that it takes me a while to get into them, however I'm so glad I continued it because honestly it's the best book I've ever read.

Funny, yet sad but full of love and hope!

This is book two in the Walsh family collection. The focus is on Rachel and she's a drug addict living in America with her best friend and boyfriend. She doesn't really appreciate that she is an addict until she has an overdose and gets taken back to Ireland by her family to go into rehab. Rachel thinks the Cloisters is going to be like a Spa for a few weeks but gets a surprise when she gets there. I love the fact that she's always hopeful to see a celebrity or find out where the luxury treatments are.
Her family are fantastic, they clearly love and care for her but don't hold back and still talk to her like they do to each other. Her sisters laugh at her for being a druggie but you know they are worried.
The heart breaking part is when she talks about Luke and her best friend. She's annoyed that they betray her by telling the therapist about her behavior. To Rachel, she just enjoyed a party but the truth is she did any party to take a substance even if it meant hurting her friends.
I liked the fact that the subject of addiction was handled really well and shows that you don't just step out of rehab 'fixed'. The fact that it took Rachel over two years to be able to like herself was nice and the ending is exactly what you want as a reader!

A Modern Day Classic !

I can’t recommend this highly enough and if I could give this 10 stars I would !! This book is a complete joy and one of my all time favourites. We follow Rachel’s story at a point in her life where she’s a little lost and not sure what’s gone wrong and why and the way Marian Keyes writes makes sure you are rooting for her all the way. It was such an honest story and told so well with laughs and tears and cringing moments that I just absolutely loved every single word. Marian Keyes is one of the best authors of modern times and this is my favourite story of all the books of hers I’ve read. I’m smiling just remembering Rachel and the rest of the Walsh family. It will take a lot to better this book so don’t miss it !!

Good but with some significant imperfections
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 July 2019Verified Purchase
I very much enjoyed the storyline of this novel; Rachel’s journey through the Cloisters, an addiction treatment centre, and the flashback descriptions of her life in New York prior to entering this establishment made very entertaining - and informative - reading. However the writing style, which was excellent in some parts of the book detracted, in other parts, from the enjoyment of the story. There were times when the humour was so banal as to be downright cringe-inducing....and unnecessary to enhance the particular scene. Similarly, some of the characterisations were greatly exaggerated, in an attempt at humour I assume, but the result merely fell flat and detracted from credibility. Rachel’s dad who, in everyday life, adapted his language, accent and lifestyle to that of his part in an amateur dramatics production of Oklahoma was but one example. Humour is entirely relevant in a novel such as this, with a very serious theme, but it must be used judiciously rather that merely gratuitously. At several points in the first third of the book, where these “irritations” were most in evidence, I almost gave up. Thereafter, however, things picked up and there was a significant improvement. The interactions with Josephine were totally absorbing and, I believe, a true reflection on what this type of addiction therapy would be like. I also appreciated the way in which Rachel’s character was developed; quite an objectionable individual most of the time but with an extremely fragile, unstable personality. With a little more attention to detail, ie. in some of the characterisation and the deployment of humour, this novel would have been 5-star rather than 3. It IS enjoyable....if the reader is able to overlook some of the issues described above.
