I think it must be a difficult task to produce work that has emotion and depth, without being maudlin or depressing. The book was great - exciting, some humour, a lot of tension. Also, we know who is going to be romantically involved, but there is a loooong way to go to reach that goal.
The people in this book are amazing. Each one is unique, with no lazy cliches used. Each seems to have some mental challenge - PTSD, asperges, alzimers, bullying/peer pressure (also called court politics), grief, etc.
Our leading lady, Sage, is heroic, smart and deeply traumitized. Tehl, the Crown Prince, has trouble dealing with others, but adores math (as Gav puts it - “he is what I like to refer to as a very smart-dumb person”). His brother, Sam, plays so many characters that he is loosing sight of his own. Also, we have the ailing king, the cousin (I adore Gav), the rebel leader, and the healer - all of whom are a complex delight. Together, these men and women can heal or balance each other and save a nation on the brink of war.
The sequel continues to be equally as impressive.

The first book was ok and held some promise. But this book crashed. Characters were always thin, now they are transparent. Guess it really is YA. The author may improve with more life experience. Certainly she may be able to add believable emotional responses and more realistic fight scenes. But I'll leave that to the another reader. My journey in this series stops here.

I loved every word of this story! The depth that is found throughout calls like a siren’s voice. There’s so much to see, hear and understand. Grief, hate, love, fear, evil and good are all there and are described so perfectly as a kind of sub-story that forms the base of this world. I love Sage and her parents, the king and both his sons. I laughed and I cried more than once and cannot wait for the next book!

I really, really enjoyed this book. The author writes as if she has been writing for years, and it lacks the awkward sentencing that many debut novels seem to have. Her writing flows, moving through the story and plot line with ease and it was a joy to read.
I thought the plot itself was well thought out and had enough twists and turns to keep readers interested wanting to find out more.
I would have liked to see an little more character development, in order to better understand and empathise with the different characters, but I can see by the ending that Frost Kay has given room to develop them more in depth over her next few (I hope!) Installments. I, myself, have already bonded and picked a couple of favourites who I am rooting for, but in the essence of not writing spoilers, I won't divulge who they are and why :)
The story ends on somewhat of a cliffhanger, but I felt it was well-rounded and a great ending that frustrated me just enough to be dying to read the next installment lol.
Frost Kay, your book was amazing! And it is one I highly recommend to all my friends. Now please hurry and write number 2! Enquiring minds are desperate to know what comes next!

Wow, amazing storyline and incredible storytelling.
I thoroughly enjoyed the depth, the characters and the setting.
I liked the way Sage is portrayed - talented, fierce, alluring and a well of inner strength.
The other male leads in this book is also complicated, strong, charming, intelligent and completely different personalities. Each has their journey that they are on but all connected back to Sage.
I came across this book in my recommendations and love it that much, I've already ordered book 4 before I started reading this one.

I liked the book well enough, as well as it's sequel. The plot is interesting, well written and the characters are varied. There are a lot of flaws though. With the end of the second book I'm only wanting to continue the series for the relationship development. It's like a good author has taken the ideas of a 12 year old and written a series with it. The main girl is a complete Mary Sue. It's very unrealistic in regards to her skills, really I'm expecting her to not be human with how perfect she is and how all men fall at her feet. Speaking of which, it's a land where women are lesser yet it doesn't seem to affect Sage beyond the introduction. She's just that beautiful it seems. Her acting, manipulation and psychology skills are amazingly impossible for someone who grew up following their father around forge. Does she have special powers after all?
There are also aspects that are fine at first, good even, but once there's repetition it becomes jarring and annoying. An obvious example is with how often she's described as beautiful. In paragraphs. There's only so many ways someone can be described as beautiful before it loses meaning and impact. It makes it feel like the books are moving in slow spiraling circles rather than forward. The annoyance slowly turns to disgust regarding these two particular men from the rebellion, especially with the end of the second book. Can I say the characters are stupid? I knew this would happen, annoyingly, which is not a good thing because it doesn't make sense. It's just explained away, like many other aspects of the book.
Some parts feel forced. This complaint makes more sense in the second book but she's so close to everyone but the love interest. Realistically she should be more distant from everyone rather than dividing it into the love interest and everyone else. Well her kissing male friends on the cheek knowing they can or do love her romantically doesn't match her character anyway in my opinion. There's too much lust, and yet not enough. Be blunt or imply, have it or don't have it. Not both.

EPIC Fantasy - I NEED BOOK 2 NOW!!!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 March 2017Verified Purchase
Fantasy is one of my favourite genre’s and is one of the reasons I love books so much - I read ALOT of fantasy! So of course as an avid reader I had to pick up this book!
The main character is Sage and she is brought into a rebellion because she loves her country and wants to help keep those she loves safe - but equally without harming anyone unnecessarily to reach their goals! What an interesting character she is - bold and strong in a male dominated world. She works secretly as a blacksmith, creating beautiful weapons of war! Her family allow her to do this, however selling her works under her fathers name! Secretly Sage has also trained with the weapons of war she has created - as her father told her that she can’t make a perfect weapon without learning how its moves and how to use it (smart man her dad). The rebellion have been watching her - and realise her potential as a swordsman, spy and and sword maker!
Sage is a beautiful, snarky and sharp female lead - thank god - because if I get one more sappy, skirt wearing, damsel in distress ‘heroine’ in the fantasy Genre I will cry! Sage has the sassy vibes of Celaena Sardothien from Sarah J Maas’ Throne of Glass series! She is feisty even under torture and capture - however does suffer for what is done to her, which of course makes her so much believable! I love a broken but strong character - she doesn’t let it cripple her!
The book is set in two POV - which flips between Sage’s and Prince Tehl - so we get to see from a commoner outside the castle walls and also through the Royal’s point of view. These work alongside and then meld together to tell a very similar story as Sage begins to learn what the Royal are keeping from their people. Never once did I get confused between who was speaking and totally felt that each character had there own voice and personality!
Prince Sam, second in line to the throne after his brother is a sexy, smart ass spy. Gavriel, a big Bear with a heart of gold is part of Sam’s spy network The Elite and also is a cousin to the Princes - I LOVE me some Gav and want a hug from him!
I love that Frost has written all her women to be strong and sassy, who know there own worth - Mara the healer and even Sage’s Mother! What a breathe of fresh air, from the usual mother-daughter fraught relationship and simpering ladies of the court.
The back story of the King and his wife is simply stunning and the little hint of the myths of Aermia are so intriguing and beautiful for example the Sirenidae (think mermaids). The view of love and what it stands for melts my heart, not a weapon to use to their advantage like many other authors do!
I wasn’t able to predict at all what would happen next, which as a massive fantasy reader you begin to see the patterns! I couldn’t put it down and was up until the late hours reading - yay!
THE MEN - all yummy and intriguing - although we have no real love interest in this book I can feel the simmers of some romance between a few of the men and Sage - PLEASE, PLEASE give me romance in the next one eeeeekkkkk.
I forgot that this is a first debut story from Frost - because it read like any other massively successful authors on my shelf - lets hope that the way this series goes! Frost Kay Author World Book tours - yay
I feel like there is so much in this story and I can’t wait for the story and character development.
Okay so thats It - Love it - from cover to cover! Please read it - you won’t be disappointed!

A fantastic debut novel from what's sure to be an up and coming author
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 March 2017Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book and feel like I haven't read a fantasy book that has excited me like this in a long time. It sucked me into its depths right from the first paragraph and you know what they say about a good book, it's got to grab you with the first few words. It then kept me on the edge of my seat the rest of the way through the book, never knowing what would happen next. Just the kind of gripping suspense you want from a book as its what keeps it exciting and fresh and Rebel's Blade sure had all of that.
It's hard to believe that this is the debut novel from the author, Frost Kay as its incredibly well written. The story flowed at a smooth pace for me and I got really annoyed every time I was distracted by someone whilst reading it as it was one that I could have quite happily read straight through. The world building is there, but its not distracting from the story. The characters are varied. There are several with big personalities, but the POV's are from our two main protagonists, Sage and Tehl. However I feel the author may be building up some of the other characters to have their own books in the future. Sage and Tehl, well they are vastly different and troubled characters. We are made to feel lots of high emotions with and for both of these characters. Sage I know for sure that I like and Tehl well I do also like him, however there were some points where I really did want to knock him on the head. I'm glad that we get both of their POV's as it makes some situations clearer for us the reader, although that definitely doesn't help the characters out with mis understandings. It's definitely a well plotted series and I can tell that there will be a slow burn romance in this which I'm pretty sure I will enjoy.
This book definitely gets the full five star rating from me. If you're a fan of Tamora Pierce, Rachel E. Carter and Elise Kova then I think this book will be right up your alley. Trust me and give it a try as I'm pretty sure you won't regret it.

It was amazing from start to finish

I'm not a big fantasy reader, but this one came across my desk and I thought I would give it a go. It was amazing from start to finish! I loved it! The switching POV's gave you a fuller read and allowed you to step inside the mind of different characters and their wants and needs for Aermia. From the crown prince to his brother, to Sage, a rebel wanting to fight for the same things as the brothers, the safety and success of Aermia. It was beautifully written and told an amazing story from start to finish. Ending on a cliffhanger will leave you desperate to find out what happens next in this amazing story. Love it and I highly recommend it to even people who are not big fantasy fans!
