5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious take on a universal longing
Reviewed in the United States on 1 July 2021
This keenly observed memoir of an alienated Liverpool teen inhaling Miami Vice episodes and wishing he could be as cool as Ad Rock will resonate deeply with former alienated American teenagers who memorized Monty Python and wished we could be as cool as the Sex Pistols or A Flock of Seagulls.

Bennett has a knack of melding the highlight reel bombast of his onetime idol, sportscaster George Michael, with a sincerity and generosity of spirit. The expat Scouser offers a self-deprecating, side-splitting riot, while providing an unsparing window into his hometown during a low point — in Bennett's words, "British Baltimore without the steamed crabs upside."

As a Pittsburgher obsessed with Liverpool (I write about its antique skyscraper in my new book "MultiStories"), I especially appreciate Bennett's knack for showing how a city is always so much more than its sports teams, even for their biggest fans.
