4.0 out of 5 stars DJT bashing? No.

MLT has penned a good resume of American history as it relates to racism, primarily. A “Reckoning “! Whilst there are appropriate statements regarding her uncle’s curious, and often mind-blowing manner and issues, the book is not one joining the queue of the many recent editions lambasting DJT. Somewhat psychological and psychiatric academically q, especially in the latter one third, it is still a worthwhile read for those who wish to more clearly understand the past 150+ year period as it relates to the various races of indigenous Americans, slave Americans, Latin Americans and Anglo-Saxon Americans. Well done MLT.

I found this book a bit one sided but it was a great refresher as to what has happened and still happening in the United States. Good Read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enlighten yourself - Read this book

I pre ordered this book without reading the description, figuring it was going to be an expansion of her first book, about Trump and their family.

Surprise, it wasn’t about that, and I’m really glad that it wasn’t. The topic that Mary does talk about is taboo in white culture, but so necessary to bring to the table given the social events unfolding around us.

Give this book a read, it’s only a couple hundred pages, very quick to get through and definitely worth your time. I think everyone would benefit mentally from reading this book covering social injustice and the COVID pandemic response. The information in these pages psychologically analyzes how America got to where we are today, and where to go from here to heal from it.

She helps lay the path to equality and a better recovery as a nation, I truly hope we all walk it this time.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little bit too much preaching on equality

I loved Mary Trump's first book, probably because her uncle is so easy to abhor, and she is good at that. This one was partially about the former 2 year old in chief, but a lot of it was about race inequality, which is not a problem. I agree it's there. But she seemed to miss on a lot of things. She seems to hold "the South" totally and exclusively responsible for slavery, and paints with a broad brush. I was raised in south east Missouri, just below the Mason Dixon line. People here were mostly poor to middleton, and from what I have learned, there weren't any slaves around here. But the union army was infamous for raiding, burning, destroying and killing innocent people. We were southern, but not slavers. On the other hand, she failed to mention that the Emancipation Proclamation only freed the slaves in the South, not the North. She didn't mention anything about the northern politician slave holders or how they didn't want to free their slaves. And the biggest point she missed was that the whole point of the South's animosity with the federal government was it's adamant ideal that State's Rights should absolutely be over lorded by the federal government. Not the way the original United States was formed. There are a lot of ignorant people out there concerning our nations history. In this book, to a person that has deeply researched our history, she has shown her ignorance of the full story. As much as I like her and respect her intellect and insight into her lesser uncle, I believe she was a tad one sided in her northern beliefs per this book. But that's just my opinion, too.

4.0 out of 5 stars From A History Teacher

I was a U.S. History teacher for 20 years. I had read Ms. Trump's first book, and I found it to be really revealing, especially about their family history. To be honest, I had NO IDEA what I was ordering on this one, but I had seen Ms. Trump recently in an interview & wanted to check it out. I am about halfway through the book, and OF COURSE I knew most of the things that she discusses, after teaching history for so long. BUT!!! As I was reading all of it, I was almost desperate to think that IF most Americans (not sure high schoolers are even READY to take it all in) did read this book, it could be life & country-changing. Wow. She doesn't explain slavery, she explains the plans that white people had, both politically and socially. Then she goes on to discuss the destruction of Native Americans. Sure, we all had some exposure to this in school, but I suddenly wished that I still WAS a history teacher, to share all of it. Yes, there's some "Uncle Donald" in there, but that's only a smaller % of it. Short book, easy to understand, and WOW.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a very negative assessment of United States history
Reviewed in the United States on 20 February 2022

Mary Trump focuses on all the negative history of the United States. The fact is that almost all nations have some sort of sordid history, especially in Europe and the Far East. While the facts are true, it neglects all of the good things that have been accomplished. She is part of the dominant culture, but that is the way it has evolved from the very beginning whether she likes it or not. I am a minority and yet the white culture has for the most part treated me very well. I cannot in good conscience tear down the US in this manner even though I am very much aware of some of the bad events that have transpired. It is part of human nature and it transcends cultures as far as meanness is concerned. However, it is not all bad and we are as human beings still a work in progress—not only in this country but in the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars A more general treatise on white supremacy and discrimination
Reviewed in the United States on 25 September 2021

I was expecting too much emphasis on Donald, but Mary Trump does a nice job of looking at white supremacy from an historical perspective and how Donald only furthers the discrimination against immigrants and non-whites through fear-mongering and convincing the vast majority of whites whom he helps not at all that he is their savior. A worthwhile read if maybe a little too brief—but it does hint at the level of treasonous behavior in the attempt to subvert the last presidential election which we now had a detailed plan to not seat the duly elected president and re-insert a man who has never won a majority of votes in any election.

4.0 out of 5 stars More a history lesson than anything else.

Loved her first book, finding her style very approachable as well as with some surprising empathy for her uncle and other Trump family members in explaining how they got to be the monsters they became. This one is very interesting and well researched but definitely more of a history lesson on how we got here as a nation than zeroing in on Trump. There's a lot about our own history that we definitely haven't been taught, and this book illustrates how ripe we have become for such an expert opportunist as Trump is. A slower read but definitely worthwhile.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very insightful, but I could easily see the bias of the author.

Noticibly different than her first book. Seems to me that she seemed very knowledgeable- since she is a psychiatrist- but her bias against the subject was easily seen. I liked her first book (about her cousin, Donald Trump) more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting book but small print

Mary Trump knows her subject and writes a very interesting and insightful book. However, I found the print too small for easy reading. The page count is just 181 pages. Larger print would have made a longer book but more enjoyable to read. Seniors beware!
