I found this book a bit one sided but it was a great refresher as to what has happened and still happening in the United States. Good Read.

She knows her stuff, she knows what's been going wrong all these years, and she spells it out perfectly, blow by tragic blow.

This is an important book by a woman who knows of what she writes. She is qualified not only by family experience but also by her professional experience as a clinical psychologist. Well written too.

3.0 out of 5 stars WHY???

According to the subtitle, author, Mary L. Trump, wrote this book for the purpose of “Finding a Way to Heal”, at least partially. Hhhhmmm…

“The Reckoning” reads much more like an history book. It starts with the history of slavery but Trump has joined the CRT bandwagon and begins in 1865 and runs thru Jim Crow in 1965. After pointing to all those who are wrong in these highlighted events she moves on to discuss Uncle Donald. Let’s make this simple and summarize by saying she says he did nothing right and most was trauma inducing.

After the quick diatribe on Donald, M. L. Trump goes back to issues facing Black Americans focusing on white supremacy and all it’s historical manifestations. These take us right up to present day where she takes on all the contemporary Republicans.

Now it’s time for the summary, the healing part. M. L. Trump is a professional and I expected something more than the quips we’ve been hearing in the media for months, even years. That didn’t happen which brings me right back to my headline: WHY???

There is absolutely nothing new here. If you want or need an history lesson on slavery or CRT, this one is at least literate. It’s also completely anti DLT, unabashedly biased and offers little in the way of how to find healing that you haven’t already heard ad nauseum. Chances are you will be making offering$ to the author via the purchase of her personal cathar$i$ 📚

Excellent distillation of the shameful history we didn't learn in high school. A look in the mirror is due, as Dr. Trump succinctly points out. This is a must read for all Americans in order for us to keep this great country and the Democracy it is supposed to represent.

I pre ordered this book without reading the description, figuring it was going to be an expansion of her first book, about Trump and their family.

Surprise, it wasn’t about that, and I’m really glad that it wasn’t. The topic that Mary does talk about is taboo in white culture, but so necessary to bring to the table given the social events unfolding around us.

Give this book a read, it’s only a couple hundred pages, very quick to get through and definitely worth your time. I think everyone would benefit mentally from reading this book covering social injustice and the COVID pandemic response. The information in these pages psychologically analyzes how America got to where we are today, and where to go from here to heal from it.

She helps lay the path to equality and a better recovery as a nation, I truly hope we all walk it this time.

Dr. Trump's first book was an absolute gem and I hope every reader in America bought it. THis one? OMG.

If you have no idea of the history of racism in America, if you have general ideas but have never read a really good study of the subject, you can get some value from learning that.

However - the title of this book, its description was not The History of Racism in America & how racism is the answer to all problems. It was billed as finding a way to heal. Meaning action that we all can take to make sure that Donald or another authoritarian bully never takes power in this country again. There is a smattering of words on that subject in the last chapter.

And BTW, racism is not the only or even the most fundamental problem in the USA. Rabbi Michael Lerner's last three books, for example, talk about income inequality, power inequality, as the substrate that racism (including anti-Semitism) and sexism need to rest on. Black people are not the only losers in this horrible culture; remember cruelty to brown Causasians, truly horrific cruelties to women of all colors, the desperation of parents who can't feed their kids on a min. wage that is half what it is everywhere else in the world. Enough - entire and excellent books have been written on how different ethnic/color groups plus women are disempowered as a deliberate tactic of the power-seeking kleptocracy. RWA's - right-wing authoritarian thinking - is the statistically-clear substrate whose outward manifestations are racism (against all the Have-Nots, not just Blacks), Sexism, Anti-(insert religion or culture here).

I had no idea how someone could write such brilliant and incisive work once and then - this. Two theories present themselves:
1) she wrote it too fast, wanting to have a second book.
2) she's rich and feels guilty, ascribing all of her privilege to her whiteness, and ignoring the millions of $. Yes, she was gypped by Donald in a blatant theft, but when it's the difference between 5 million and 500 million..... you can understand how she might be feeling a bit uncomfortable about herself.

I'm only sorry - and very sorry, indeed - that I wasted $ on this. Folks, I have Black siblings and have taken more classes in African American and African history than Dr. Trump or probably most Americans. I socked a school official who made my little brother cry because he refused to let him join Cub Scouts. I've been with weeping Black friends who lost their jobs to racism. On and on. And I've watched the wealth and power gap get wider than the Pacific Ocean just in my own lifetime. I've been victimized by gender violence and had my life choices cut off by men in power. There's more wrong with the USA than just one type of racism. If we manage to salvage democracy itself, it will only be because we focus on THAT.

You won't focus on the root causes of Black disempowerment by reading this book. You certainly won't find a way to restore what Donald Trump destroyed - and build a better democracy - by reading this book.

Very disappointed in this book! The first third discusses slavery and stealing land from Native Americans. Kept wondering when we were going to get to the meat. Then, there was a brief discussion of "Donald" as she refers to him, his cabinet, his lies and daily crude and and corrupt antics. Then, back to slavery, Natives and Jews. Next paragraph, back to Donald. Final chapter discusses our PTSD from the past four years. Then, back to slavery, etc. Seems to be more of a thesis on White Supremacy than our current national mess with suggested hopeful healing.
