This is his third top shelf LP in a row. If you loved Something More Than Free, you'll find this to be just as satisfying. Isbell has a way with words that catches the ear and motivates the mind. The song arrangements and the band performances make his work classic and fresh at the same time.

Unspectacular

I love Jason Isbell and have all of his records. I'm also one of those that still doesn't believe he has topped Southeastern yet, boring perhaps, but true.
I had really high expectations of this record but despite quite a few listens, I just find it quite boring. Apart from Overseas (which has some Dire Straits - esque guitar work strangely), there aren't any terribly memorable songs and the whole thing leaves you feeling a bit robbed.
Judging by most reviews on here, people will disagree with me. If you are starting on Isbell and are looking for a first record, try Southeastern or his Live at the Ryman album.
Being such a prolific songwriter it seems he is almost immune to criticism but he's definitely done better than this imo.

Rich vein of fine form continues, another strong Americana album, lots of stories
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 May 2020Verified Purchase
I am now a committed fan of Jason, rating his previous couple of albums highly. In a recent interview I read with him, he regards himself as a story teller, and indeed for me his strongest songs tend to relay a story. Often these are sad or melancholy, it is certainly not all a bed of roses for Jason.
In the past he has had well documented problems with addiction to drink and drugs, but more recently he has been on the straight and narrow. He has a new found love and relationship with band member Amanda Shires. They even have a guest vocal appearance from David Crosby, American folk rock elder statesman.
Some of the songs rock out, with some fine loud electric guitar on display. From listening to the album a couple of times so far, my favorite track is St Peter's Autograph, a slower more reflective number. It Gets Easier reflects how he has managed to extract himself from the demon drink, and is obviously very personal to his own history.
I know from his previous couple of studio albums, after a few listens additional hooks and subtleties emerge and become ingrained in your head. He is a songwriter and performer at the top of his game, with a strong supporting band, producing a 3rd great consecutive studio album. The closing track, Letting You Go is another song that is simple and beautiful in its message and delivery, a fathers reflection on his daughter growing up and becoming independent. The final 3 tracks really hit the spot well for me, a highlight finish to a brilliant album.
For me personally the opening track What've I Done To Help rocks out, but is a bit shouty and repetitive, slightly clunky compared with most of the rest of the material, on what is a 3 out 3 hit rate for his recent studio output.

You read reviews by some who tell you that Jason has been on a downward path since Southeastern I disagree, I think hes become an essential artist for me and this is one of the albums of the year. I think the weakest song is the first track "Be Afraid" which sounded tossed off and careless on release but works better when you hear the whole picture and while I like the song "What Have I done to help" would be better if he had cut about a minute off the end of the song, it gets a bit tired and repetitive.
These are minor faults this will still be played continously in the car and at home whenever I get the chance, theres enough strong songs for it to rank comfortably with what he has given us on the last few albums. Bring on the next album.

Don't Drive by Jason
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 May 2020Verified Purchase
Jason Isbell continues his rich vein of form with another stellar record that firmly puts him ahead of some his influences from his youth, now best mates with David Crosby who appears on ths=is record. After several years Jason is now getting the deserved plaudits. A gem of a record it's not country Americana just great songs, lyrics played by his brilliant band which includes Mrs Isbell (Amanda Shires). Essential.

Arrived on its release date.Sealed in plastic.I seen Jason for the first time this week singing Only Children live and thought he and the song were amazing so thought I'd order his new album and see what the rest of his music is like.Got the most amazing voice and love his playing of the guitar and Amanda Shires on the violin. What a talent!! The rest of the album is equally as good. The way he brings personal situations into his music is so powerful. Like songs about his past issues with drink and about his young daughter. You can hear his feelings through his music. hoping to get to see him live in the UK in November, but may get cancelled due to everything thats going on? Jason singing live is a completely different experience to listening to songs on the album.
