Everything I wanted to replace my ancient FM clock-radio which was gradually dying.

It's DAB so tuning is no problem; compared with the old knob twiddling mechanism. That means it's easy to switch to Radio 3 after the news on Radio 4 gets repetitive or too depressing. I love the dark at night and the display can be turned completely off; compare that with the old bright red LED over which I had to drape a handkerchief. And call me sad but my iPhone sometimes comes to the bedroom with me and now I have a bedside charger!

Initially, I was thinking of the smaller and cheaper Ortus 1 ( Roberts Radio ORTUS1W DAB/DAB+/FM Alarm Clock Radio with Anytime Snooze - White ) but this compact Ortus 2 isn't much larger and only a little more (£20 as I write). The Ortus 1 has the same functions but fewer buttons which makes the setting/use a little trickier. I was happy to pay for easier interface and iPhone charging.

Settings faulty

This radio appeared to tick all the boxes that we were looking for. It worked fine on the first night of use. However, we noted that the time was not set correctly. We exactly followed the instructions given to reset this but was unable to do this as the mode setting just froze on the screen. I tried turning on and off at the mains which cleared the screen but on following instructions the same problem occurred. I then tried to reset the clock to its Factory settings. Annoyingly, once again the clock face was frozen and would not respond as indicated in the instruction manual.
Extremely disappointing. I did consider using the option to ring the manufacturer's helpline but felt that the problem was going to reoccur.

Not good enough for the price

This was purchased to replace a cheap(ish) radio alarm that was fiddly to turn off in the dark. So I decided to shell out a few more hard earned pennies on something that should be easier to use. The instruction said the clock should pick up the time signal but nope, not even in the same room as another clock that auto updates. It supposedly picks up the signal broadcast over the DAB or FM networks - I was getting a full signal on both but no clock update. So I had to set the clock manually - the instructions to set the clock are the last page of the manual - here it says how to set the clock to receive the signal and guess what - it's default setting was off! So time spent trying to get a signal for nothing!!! Setting the clock or any other setting relies on scrolling through a menu but the item I wanted i.e to set the time did not always appear - the whole button pressing and scrolling using the tuning knob is unnecessarily complicated anyway, but when it doesn't even work properly it makes it even harder. After some time I got the time and alarms sorted but for the money it seemed to have cheap components. The clock/alarms etc is not intuitive to programme so don't lose the instruction manual whatever you do. An OK clock radio but only worth half the money at most

Nice looker but shame about the performance

I had high hopes for this clock radio alarm.
Lots of nice features with the alarm/sleep fading...auto scan...neat design...very stable.
Big trouble was it lost all the stations. I did a re-scan and there they all were again. Didn't move the aerial; turned it off then on and they were all 'Off Air' again...moved the aerial and they all came back...turned it off then on and they were all 'Off Air' again...moved the aerial back to its original position and there they all were again...but not when I switched off/on as the aerial needed moving once more.
Many of the tuned stations had 3 bars showing for signal strength but they still disappeared as 'Off Air'.
Nice looker and nice features but I can't live with not knowing whether the alarm will work or not or whether it will need the aerial moving constantly. According to the 'Digital Radio' website we live in a strong signal area so it can't be our location and I get a good strong signal in my car...even when parked in our garage.
FM reception was no better than our current old clock/radio but tuning was easier. Same number of FM stations received and sound quality was the same but I wanted DAB and sadly this unit was disappointing. Shame; I was expecting better at this price.

UPDATE: I contacted Roberts Radio regarding this problem and they advised me to return the radio to Amazon for a replacement as it was within the 30 days return period.
I have now returned the faulty Ortus2 but can't decide whether to re-order due to the other 'glitches' many people have experienced......it is such a nice looking clock/radio though...hmm.......

I love this radio in that it has good sound and I find it easy to operate. I also think it looks good. I have however experienced the alarm going off at random times in comparison to its set time, such as this week going off 1.5 hours before it was meant to! I have however performed a full system reset and so far not had a problem so keeping my fingers crossed it doesn’t happen again.
