Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit made multiple television appearances, including The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan and Austin City Limits. Isbell won Artist of the Year, Song of the Year (Cover Me Up) and Album of the Year at the 2014 Americana Music Awards. At David Letterman s personal request, Jason and his wife, Amanda Shires performed on one of the last episodes of The Late Show in April 2015.

Jason's singing is clear and true throughout , the band playing sympathetically and there is not a weak track, every one is a winner, high quality control throughout. In general I tend to prefer the slightly more mellow tracks, like The Life You Chose, but in contrast a few others rock out and are more uptempo like Palmetto Rose, so creating a varied balance throughout the album . I am impressed by great songwriting and playing maintained throughout his last 3 albums, all of which have made a lasting impression on me.
I would describe this as Americana , it is modern country with a social conscience, not cloying or syrupy. It gives a real insight into daily life from a working class perspective, and tells it as it really is, not embellished. It all strikes a true chord with me, splendid stuff. From not having heard of him 4 months ago, his last 3 albums have now established him as serious artist who is genuine , his honesty and sincerity shine through as something truly special. More people in the UK need to hear and become familiar with his fine material, he is someone to cherish and keep a future eye and ear on.
Brilliant melodies, great chord choices with some words that get you "thinking"...with "The Life You Chose" as the standout track for me.
