El Fitzwillian interpretó estos cuartetos bajo la observación de Shostakovich, el cual quedó muy satisfecho con lo que escuchaba. Por lo tanto se puede hablar de "bendición".
Estas versiones son de las más violentas de la discografía de las obras, estableciéndose con dicho concepto un nexo con el fallecimiento del propio Shostakovich en aquella época. Pero al tiempo, el Fitzwillian se muestra con un virtuosismo difícilmente rebatible.
Hay en la discografía distintas integrales disponibles. A la presente se sumarían dos del Borodin y una tercera incompleta para Virgin (actualmente en Chandos); más la del Brodsky (Teldec), Cuarteto Shostakovich (Olympia), y la del Emerson (DG); por citar las más importantes según la crítica.
La presente edición se presenta en una caja de cartón del ancho equivalente a dos CDs, con seis CDs también en sobres individuales de consistencia correcta, acompañados de un librito firmado por Decca, en 1992. No hay constancia de que hayan sido remasterizados nuevamente, las únicas fechas que constan son las de las grabaciones, 1975-1977. Ninguna más.
