"Us," he corrected, flicking the burnt card to the floor.
"You want us," she added, "to dress to the nines, roll down to the speakeasies and cheat at Black Jack?"
Chicago in 1922. The city is ruled by a tyrannical energy company called The Corporation.
Sixteen-year-old Evelyn O'Donnell's family is in shambles when a rogue vehicle mysteriously kills her father. But she suspects something much more sinister in his death, something linked to the rebellion that nearly leveled the city so many years ago. And her karate lessons won't be enough to defend her and her brother when The Corp comes to collect the children of the apocalypse.
Penniless but determined, she meets her brother's friend: the charming and mischievous Black Jack Player, Dante Malachi. Discovering a unique power within her, Evelyn and her new accomplice plot to sting the city's speakeasies and avenge her father's death.
But as the duo join the razzle-dazzle of Chicago's underworld; Evelyn discovers her father had tried to protect her from the dark truth about this city and her past. Evelyn knows she will have to do everything in her power if she ever hopes of reaching their shared dream of a life free from poverty and oppression.
Even if it means joining the mob.

Beyond just the plot, which flies by at a breakneck speed that will keep you reading until the very last page, I also love the two main characters here: Evelyn and Dante. Evelyn feels like the ideal of what every literary heroine should be: flawed, yet strong and positive and above all with a voice that makes her feel completely authentic. She's counterbalanced well by Dante, the brooding anti-hero type who get dragged along for the ride. The story also balances a YA sort of world with elements of sci-fi and fantasy, from high-low-tech to magical powers that always keep things fresh and interesting.
While at some points I wish the story would slow down a little and focus a bit more on character relationships outside the main duo and explain a bit more about the core concepts at play here, I'm sure they will be elaborated upon in the eventual sequel, which I eagerly await. A fantastically fun debut by this author!
