OK. So I LOVE fairytales in general. This one popped up on sale, I saw it was a fairytale adaptation so I was super excited. I'd just finished reading To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo and I loved it, so this seems like a nice step.
First off, I didn't hate it, I just felt a little bit meh. For me this definitely had The Cruel Prince vibes, and that wasn't really my cup of tea either. They both have that kind of split between humans and fae, where the humans are nice and the fae are generally not. I'm gonna lay it out there that I'm feeling a little over that trope.
I can definitely see how Sleeping Beauty influenced this, but how it was used just felt a little bit convenient. There wasn't much backstory or depth to the characters that really pulled me to care about any of them or their stories. Our main two characters, Luna and Phillip, had a LOT of insta-love that I was just not rooting for at all. We were also rocking a love triangle in there too.
The one thing that pulled it back a bit for me was the world-building. There are some really nice descriptions, particularly a nasty rose garden and Luna's cottage that made the world really vivid.
Overall though, I'm a character kind of girl and this one just fell a bit flat for me. If you loved The Cruel Prince though, I think you'd also enjoy this one.

I did like this story but it felt very predictable, aside from that it was an enjoyable read.

Excellent Fairy Tale Story With a Few Great Twists Too
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 February 2018Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. It was a light read with a great storyline and if you enjoy fairy tales, I'm sure you'll love it too. The cover is what captured my attention and I'd seen it on Facebook for the past couple of months and I knew I wanted to read it. The description was another key thing, that first line...Once upon a time. Yep I knew I was reading this book as soon as it was released. I love fairy tale retellings and this one didn't disappoint. Two witches, an evil faery, a handsome prince, what more can you ask for.
The story centres around twins Aura and Luna, both cursed to sleep. Aura sleeps at night while Luna fades once the sun rises and both are cursed to sleep for an entire season too. Luna wants to sever the bond between the two of them because she believes Aura is evil and doesn't like the nasty things she does. Aura doesn't want the bond severed and enjoys tormenting her sister.
I don't want to spoil the story so I won't say much more. The writing is excellent, the story flows really well and the ending was just as I expected, albeit a little twist or two I didn't see coming.
All in all, an enjoyable read from an author I will be watching out for in future.

A marvelously fantastic retelling of Sleeping Beauty!
Reviewed in the United States on 12 May 2018Verified Purchase
For the nth time, Casey L. Bond never fails to deliver a one-of-a-kind story, a retelling like no other, a tale as tall and high as Mount Everest. This time, with Savage Beauty, I am left in awe and wonder as I reminisced Sleeping Beauty's story, but more on the Grimm side. And what a wonderfully savage story this was!
I've read multitude of stories about twins having opposite personalities and growing up as enemies instead of loving sisters/brothers. But this is the first time I encountered twins who could only see each other through their dreams and are separated by night and day.
Luna has the power of fire and air, can talk to animals and creates potions, and sleeps during the day and awakens at night and hibernates all throughout the summer. Aura is her exact opposite, the twin who holds the power of earth and water, loves her garden of roses, can invade her sister's dream while the other one is unconscious, and sleeps all throughout the night and hates the winter season.
While Aura may be considered the beauty of the two, her heart is as black as the night. She kills everyone that Luna loves, including William the firstborn Prince of Grithim. This eventually leads to Luna staying away from the palace and confining herself in a small cottage in the deepest forest, and has vowed to sever her ties with her twin once and for all.
This has been the most intriguing and satisfying Sleeping Beauty retelling I've read in a long while. Luna flourished with love and desire while Aura thrived in jealousy and power. The characters were all very interesting, and the plot was marvelously outlined. I loved the book from beginning to end, and was left heaving a sigh of longing and contentment.
If you've read same stories as this before, good for you. Me, I am still basking in all these rosy and bloody glory of twin fae-witch princesses and I think it would take me some time again to pick another fantasy retelling as marvelous as this. I've also vowed to read each and every story that Casey Bond writes because she knows how to tickle my fancy. If you haven't picked a Bond book, you're clearly missing something in your life.

Slow to Start but has a Fantastic Climax

“Luna was unapologetically who she was; darkness illuminated in pale light, kindness cloaked in snark, cold at times, but with a warmth bubbling beneath the frosted surface.”
Aura and Luna are bound by dark magic. They are half fae twins. Luna is princess of the night, gaining power by the moon, and has power over air and fire. Aura is princess of the day, and has power over the elements of water and earth. It is a curse that comes with great power.
Luna doesn’t want to hurt others, but Aura seems to go out of her way to kill everyone that gets too close to Luna, including Prince William. Luna will have her revenge and is convinced that she must break their bond and kill her sister. Her plan is to wait until she is awake with power, create a spell to sever the bond, and rid the kingdom of the evil Aura. Luna will do anything for that spell, until William’s younger brother, the Prince Phillip wanders onto her land.

Savage Beauty is a unique fairy tale which is very loosely based on Sleeping Beauty. This book was highly creative and imaginative, but also logical due to the background and world building. Unlike the overly imaginative Alice in Wonderland, Savage Beauty is highly creative within the set of rules that Bond has crafted in this world.
I loved having both Aura and Luna’s perspectives. After falling in love with Luna, much like William and Philip, I found it interesting to see Aura’s perspective. It was quite satisfying and confusing. How could a murderer downplay her acts? How could Aura excuse her behavior? And yet, she felt genuine when we were inside her head.
Even Philip felt like more than just the love interest. There was some depth to his character, though not as much as Luna. Luna is the fantasy character I’ve always wanted to read about. She is tormented and stubborn and hell bent on revenge. She is also sweet and caring and regretful of any actions she takes that cause hurt upon others.
Though I almost set this book down from the first chapter, I’m glad I kept reading and absolutely loved the ending.

None of the characters are likable, both sisters are INCREDIBLY naive, and Luna seems too stupid to realize the plot twist of who the villain is, which was clear as day 3 chapters into the book. The plot is in no way original, and the language used is about 8th grade level, with a character describing flying for the first time as “fun and awesome”. Way to use your big kid words! Unnecessary and uncomfortable sexual scenes that don’t make sense. Don’t waste your time, skip this one.
