I cant comment on the longevity, but I've never had an issue with Seagates in this form factor so I'm not expecting any trouble. Worked out of the box for me, transfer speeds what you would expect for a SATA 3 mechanical drive and I can recommend it for either NTFS of exFAT formats depending on your needs.

First 5TB drive I've owned, I'll be interested to see how well it compares to the 2 and 4TB seagates in terms of durability and longevity.

Great quality product, lots of room for all my files and then some. The compatibility for Windows and Mac is great addition, no need to reformat for Mac, with USB 3.0 makes everything fast. I have most of my data on my laptop but for travelling I carry a backup.
These have been great for that purpose.
They are not the fastest drive, but for the price and for my use they are 5 stars worth for sure.
I own 2 drives of these, one is at my parents house, one I carry with me.

There was only one downside for me with this hard drive. I bought it to play shows on my LG TV but it couldn't read anything so I have to cast it from my PC to the TV. I have others that work fine with my TV but it is a luck of the draw thing so be wary when buying these devices.

At the heart of the matter, the write speeds are low, in my case virtually "0". Crystal disk mark for a 64Bit Windows machine is given.
Would recommend some other Tier 1 brands instead of this if the drive is used for backup, you need good and sustained speeds, which this drive does not give
On the positive the product looks good, much nicer than the earlier gen for sure.

writing speed:
I got maximum of 109MB/s for *.zip file
avg 50MB/s for some *.mkv files to exFAT & NTFS format

reading Speed:
avg 100MB/s for same *.zip file
maximum 110MB/s for *.mkv file

I am facing heating issue while transferring files & connected standby.

Ich will eine große Festplatte (5TB), die ich - wie von jeder anderen HDD gewohnt - an mein ThinkPad anschließen und nach eventuellem Formatieren benutzen kann. Das ging hier nicht.
Spoileralarm! Des Rätsels Lösung, warum maximal 2 der 5TB formatierbar waren, war der Master Boot Record (MBR), der eben diese Größenbegrenzung hat. Seagate (genau wie die Googlesuche) ist hierzu nicht besonders mitteilsam und so hat es mich ermüdende Stunden an Recherche und Versuchen gekostet, das Ding zum Laufen zu bekommen.
Seagates Treiberinstallation hat hierbei nicht geholfen.
So ging es schließlich bei mir:
Verwaltung -> Computerverwaltung -> Datenträgerverwaltung
Hier die Platte (nicht die Partition) mit rechter Maustaste anklicken -> "Zu GPT-Datenträger konvertieren".
Danach erst gehen Partitionen über die vollen 5TB mit den normalen Bordmitteln.
Jetzt läuft die Platte gut und scheint mir auch recht schnell.
Für den anfänglichen Ärger und dafür, eine 5TB-Platte mit MBR zu verkaufen, muss ich leider drei Sterne abziehen.
Wenn ich nicht zu faul gewesen wäre, zur Post zu gehen, hätte ich bereits viel früher retourniert.

Slow writes but here's how to fix it

Just doing some copying but it was extremely slow. This is not a review peer se but there is an easy fix to speed up writes. Go into Device Manage, double click the drive and select the Policies tab. Tick 'Better Performance' and tick 'Enable Write Cacheing'. OK it and write speeds will be much improved. Like anything though keep a backup if the data is important to you.

The Seagate Backup Plus Slim Hard Drive provides a large amount of storage in a small package, with typical performance for backups.

But while it would be tempting to use a drive this small as something portable or for everyday use - the technology choices Seagate has made make these 2TB drives most suitable either for:

- backups (rather than as a scratch drive or auxiliary portable external drive for daily use); or as
- an archive drive, to store a permanent or off-site backup.

INTERNAL DRIVE: Crystal Disk Info reports the drive inside this case to be a Seagate ST2000LM007, a thin 7mm, 2.5" 5400 RPM drive originally introduced in 2016 in the Mobile HDD line of drives. It's useful to know the drive inside an external drive, as there is often much more information available on the internet about the specific drive model. That's certainly the case with this drive - a search turns up quite a bit of information.

SMR RECORDING METHOD IS BEST USED FOR BACKUP OR ARCHIVE: As with most of Seagate's consumer-oriented drives currently, this drive uses Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) to increase the data density of the disk. While this does create more storage, it can create write speed issues. It's most useful for applications such as backup that don't need frequent re-writes.

TWO PLATTERS IN A 7MM DRIVE MAY MEAN A MORE FRAGILE DRIVE: Seagate has squeezed two spinning disc platters into a very thin 7mm case, and has had to redesign the drive to accommodate that. The specifics of how that was done suggest it may not be a good choice for a drive you plan to carry and use daily.

If you plan to carry an external drive on a regular basis, I'd suggest using a more robust design than this one, even if that means a slightly larger design. For an external drive, there's not much size difference between a 9mm drive, which can more easily accomodate two platters, and a 7mm drive.

BENCHMARKS AND WRITE SPEEDS: I've done some writes to the drive, and haven't found anything surprising. The performance for your use will vary widely depending on the computer it is attached to - the speed of the computer's drives and USB connection.

POWERED VIA USB: The drive is powered from the USB port. There is no external power supply. This is overall a good thing - it makes it much easier to use the drive, and so more likely you'll back up your files often. But keep in mind that it won't work on a non-powered USB hub, or a low-powered standard USB port.

1.8TB of STORAGE: As is typical for hard drive marketing, the 2TB indicated size means this stores 2 trillion bytes, which your system will report as 1.81 TB.
