Made of plastic not alloy as stated in materials list.
Left the keys elsewhere? No problem! Just post those vital papers through the big ass gap that's left upon locking.
Make sure to leave a note on your safe warning of jagged edges or users/thieves may sue you for damages.
The lock may hold but the unit is definitely not water resistant as paperwork states, due to big ass gap.
Fire resistant/protection, I'm doutful of these claims, I'm thinking you maybe left with a big puddle of plastic from which you may be able to salvage the locking mechanism if your lucky.

Heavy and roomy enough for small valuables

Seems like a good quality, solid box. The lock is something which seems it could be broken fairy readily if someone really wanted access to the contents but this is not designed to be a heavy safe. Hopefully, the main reason I bought it, namely its fire resistance, isn't something I will be ever able to test.
Product has a slight 'dust' coating the inside but I have been assured that this is quite normal and I have never had any concerns with this.

This safe is purely to save valuable documents/magnetic media in the event of a fire. You should not consider it as a secure way to store valuable materials from theft. Given that limitation this safe probably meets its desired goal but, luckily, it has not been put to that test yet.

The safe is quite heavy but that is, I believe, because it is made of some kind of cement material that does not conduct heat very well - don't expect a lightweight product based on NASA technology at this price!

When this safe is subject to a fire it seals tight shut, preventing heat entering but the fire safe has to be smashed/prised open to remove the contents .The safe will no longer be serviceable but your contents should be intact. Sentry will replace the safe free of charge if you supply proof of the fire.

I keep this fire safe stored in an anti-theft safe to ensure full safety of valuable documents and magnetic media from theft and fire. I should really protect against water damage as well, as I live on a flood plain - I guess that is the next step.

EDIT: Nine months after writing this review the dreaded happened - house flooded by a tidal surge. Neither this safe nor the Sentry security safe it was in were waterproof! I lost pretty much everything from the security safe and the only reason I did not lose items from within the A5 chest is because it was above the flood waters!

I have now bought a floodsafe/fireproof chest from another manufacturer.

Would not protect your documents properly

I bought this to replace another SentrySafe that we had. The previous model survived a house fire and did its job wonderfully.

This one though is not up to par. When it arrived, it wouldn't even lock. I had to get out some tools to manually realign the locking mechanism. Even once that was fixed, the box does not seal properly. While "locked" I can easily life the lid half an inch, to the point where I can dump out the papers inside. There is no rubber gasket to seal it likey last one.

This safe is ideal for keeping things you wouldn't want to lose in the case of a fire i.e. passports, birth certificates, legal documents. With a 1/2Hr fire rating up to 1,550F it will do the job. However, the lock is merely a privacy lock to keep prying eyes away from your documents, this is where confusion arises as most people believe it to be a 'safe'....so the fire safe should be kept in a secure gun cabinet or a safe if theft is a concern. I mean you would be expecting a lot if you thought you were getting a safe that would deter thieves for the money spent.
