Review
The Shadows Between Us is my favorite kind of fantasy: dark, mesmerizing, and completely addictive. With a gripping mystery and layered characters, it's a glittering tale of love and the pursuit of power. Put simply: it's the Slytherin romance we've all been waiting for. --Kerri Maniscalco, #1 New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of Stalking Jack the Ripper
"Tricia Levenseller's latest, The Shadows Between Us, is a decadent and wickedly addictive fantasy, full of schemes and court intrigue, and delightful descriptions of food, which I am always a fan of." --Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times-bestselling author of the Three Dark Crowns series "A wickedly fun romp with corsets and jeweled daggers, Levenseller drops us into a competitive royal court, led there by Alessandra, an unapologetically ruthless and self-confident courtier who aims to overthrow the Shadow King and become queen. The king's mysterious abilities and dark secrets complicate her passion to rule, all building to a sizzling, unbidden romance. The Shadows Between Us will heat up the page--and your heart." --Emily R. King, author of The Hundredth Queen series A viciously satisfying romance featuring two well-matched opponents. --Booklist Praise for Tricia Levenseller:One of my favourite YA books ever. The action! The world-building! The voice! This book kicks so much ass. -- Cale Dietrich, author of The Love Interest, on Warrior of the Wild Rasmira's quest is thrilling, her emotional journey compelling; this adventure sings. --Booklist on Warrior of the Wild This high-octane novel is filled with mythical creatures and showcases a heroine who wants to be a warrior, a woman, and a leader. --School Library Journal, on Warrior of the Wild The real gratification lies in Rasmira's transformation from broken, betrayed, girl to resourceful, confident victor. Her final clash with the god is heart pounding, and her triumph in front of her village and father is satisfyingly righteous. -- The Bulletin for the Center for Children's Books, on Warrior of the Wild Levenseller has created a formidable female character who can take care of herself as she makes some hard decisions." --School Library Journal on Daughter of a Pirate King "[Levenseller's] words will pull you in, and there's no escaping them. --Charlie N. Holmberg, author of The Paper Magician Series, on Daughter of the Siren Queen "With a cunning plot, robust writing, and complicated characters, any reader will enjoy being manipulated in Levenseller's capable hands." --Anna Banks, author of the New York Times Bestseller Of Triton, on Daughter of the Pirate King

Author Q&A
What was your inspiration for writing THE SHADOWS BETWEEN US?
I wanted to write a romance with a bad boy as the love interest. And just to clarify, I don’t mean a boy who is just a player. I mean a boy who does really bad things: murder, lie, steal, etc.; but I realized the only way to believably pull off a romance with a true bad boy was to also make my protagonist sort of evil, too. From there I just put together a bunch of elements that I adore: political intrigue, magic, pretty dresses, Gothic environments, etc.
What makes Alessandra a different heroine from Daughter of the Pirate King's Alosa and Warrior of the Wild's Rasmira, and what makes them similar?
Alosa and Alessandra are both Slytherins. However, Alosa has fewer lines she’s willing to cross to achieve her ends. Rasmira is a Hufflepuff, but she and Alessandra would both fight to the death to protect the people they care about.
What reactions/ feelings do you hope readers will get from reading this novel and some of your other books?
It is my dearest wish to empower women. To help them know they can do anything they set their minds to. No matter how different we all are, we are all equally important and have something to offer the world.

The characters are amazing. Alessandra, the female main character, is snarky, sassy, kind but also very clever. She is unapologetic and herself. She was a great characer, and the male main character Kallias was dark, broody, but also sweet and fierce all at the same time.
Basically Alessandra goes to The Shadow Kings court in order to woo him, marry him and then kill him. There are some twists and turns along the way, and neither of them expected to be friends.
It was awesome. Highly recommend if you love enemies-to-lovers, assassin plots, clever characters and witty one liners. I will always buy works by this author because I know I will love them.
This is the first time I've read a book by this author and I'm looking forward to reading more by her.
Standalone, too.
I can’t recommend Tricia Levenseller enough.

I am going to start this review by being honest and saying that this is not my type of book.
That being said I know others will completely adore it, and I understand why.
This novel is unique, I have never read a book where I could not like the main characters or agree with their actions and I am pretty sure that is what the Author wanted.
I dont think I am being unfair when I say Alessandra is a villain. She is villainous, selfish, arrogant and mostly unfeeling towards others.
She is also very complex and strong. I like Alessandras strength and consistency. She doesnt back down or shy away from what she wants. She knows the effect she has on people and doesnt hide behind modesty. She likes men and is completely unashamed of that.
I have seen some comments saying that this is a book about slytherins. I agree.
I just struggle with how unlikable the characters are (In my opinion)
They are villains. The shadow king is a strong ruler and he needs a strong woman by his side. They crush down rebellions of the poor every day man and what I would call 'the good guy' (though he is a muppet)
There is unapologetic murder, a basically non existent sister relationship and the main bad guy got more sympathy from me than the king.
But it was well written and engrossing.

I wholeheartedly loved this book
It only took me a day to read, but I loathed the time that I wasn’t engrossed in this story.
I loved that Alessandra was unapologetically herself the whole way through, that these characters were flawed - seriously flawed - individuals, that I was reading about a character who had a plan, was willing to execute her plan and was so confident in her ability to do so!
It makes such a change from MC’s who are thrust into situations they have no confidence to deal with.
In fact, I found myself convinced that Alessandra had this throughout all the issues she encountered, and boy was there a lot of drama.
Tricia Levenseller clearly loves throwing in problems and hiccups for our characters to deal with, and at times I was unsure how it was going to be possible to unravel the tangle that was being woven around the plot - especially as at around 320 pages it’s not a long book at all. I counted around 10 big plot points which is a lot to deal with in such a small page count. There were a few moments that I don’t think paid off, and I think that some issues were not dealt with in a meaningful way. But hell I don’t care that some problems were written just to be solved a few pages later. It was like watching a transfixing telenovela that I just adored.
The Shadows Between Us has issues, but that doesn’t make it any less of a delectable treat that I devoured and wished for so much more of. I had such a good time reading this book, and it’s definitely making my top reads of 2020.
