5.0 out of 5 stars Another Thrilling Adventure with the heroines of Victorian Gothic Literature
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 January 2020
While in Europe, the Athena Club hear news of the disappearance of Sherlock Homes and their kitchen maid Alice. Returning home to investigate, they discover Alice’s hidden background involving a legendary enemy and a plot to take control of the British Empire. This novel and indeed this whole series is a delight. Gross relishes the chance to add, re-imagine and re-invent the women of Victorian science-fiction, fantasy and horror. It also plays around with the conventions of the epistolary novel, with the characters interrupting the narrative to debate or argue about details. It also has several narrative surprises involving unexpected characters from other appropriate literary works of the period. Anybody who enjoys female-character ensembles, Victorian fantasy and literary references and games should seek out this book and the other 2 volumes in the series.
