I love British Crime and thought that Wales would be an interesting location but although the plot was looking to be good I was let down by the main characters with alcoholism, lesbianism thrown in probably just to get sales of the book. Enjoyed the 1st half but the side issues got too much for me. Maybe I'm just too old to find them enjoyable background. They didn't affect the story and could easily have been left out. I thought that if Ruth was still pining for her partner who suddenly disappeared 4 years previously and now making eyes at a new possibility. Also the editing left alot to be desired. A bit annoying.

I Loved the the story and the characters the only drawback was the dreadful editing. There were just too many instances.of repeated phrases, words in the wrong order or phrases that just didn't make sense.
I Loved the Welsh myths and legends that peppered the story, but for someone like me who has no access to, or knowledge of the Welsh language, maybe an appendix could have been added maybe with phonetic pronunciations, just so that I could do justice to the place names, character names and the legends.
I look forward to the next book in the series, but please get a better editor!

Ok, so I suspected who the killer was at halfway through the book. The setting sounded beautiful but I thought the drawn out descriptions just too long winded. The cruelness of policing - effects on the individual was well portrayed. The was a very crude vulgar sexually explicit small section in the book which just made me wonder why that had to go in there? When the character about whom that section was written for had already had his downward spiral in life well documented. So that was slightly odd. The was blasphemy as well. I suppose it depends on what you’re looking for in a book, but I can’t recommend this one

Enjoyed this, the first DI Ruth Hunter book. Have read the DC Hunter series and was keen to see where Ruth went next. Love the setting. Enjoy the building of the professional relationship between Ruth and Nick and interested to see how that further develops. 2 deaths at a school with a few possible killers leads to a complex investigation with a few twists and turns. Look forward to reading the next in the series.

I was introduced to this author and his Ruth Hunter series through the prequel to this novel. I enjoyed the prequel so bought The Snowdonia Killings to see how the character developed. Good storyline and great descriptions of the setting of the novel. Interesting challenges for a cop form the Big Smoke moving to North Wales. Worth the read and I look forward to reading the rest in the series.

Based on the plot the book could have been very good, but I found it difficult to get into this one. Too much irrelevant and distracting detail, the writing seemed a bit awkward at times and there were occasional inconsistencies. Too much of the book focused on Nick's personal issues. The story is awash with casual drug use. And one thread of the story ends in a cliffhanger.

Geographically, grammatically and culturally challenged

I'm from North Wales, in particular Snowdonia. The geography in this book just does not work. At one point it takes the main character 40min to drive to Liverpool. From Snowdonia impossible! From somewhere like Hawarden maybe, but that is pretty much in England anyway.
There are also factual errors, two jump right out. Saab did not make the XC90, Volvo did and Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics is from Cwmaman not Cardiff. It's easy to look this stuff up on the internet.
There are also way too many typos and grammatical errors to make reading the book a pleasure. Clearly this book was not proof read or edited.
However it was two aspects in particular that I found most irksome; the lead police offer is English, recently transferred, from the Met. She does not speak Welsh, Her DS is a local native Welsh speaker. In that part of the country it would be customary for the DS to initially greet any locals in Welsh and then code switch to English for the benefit of his superior. This never happens in this book. Secondly; peoples names. I grew up in the area, almost all my friends, except those who were not originally from Wales, had Welsh names, nobody in this book has a Welsh name, not even the local boy DS.
Overall it appears as if this was written to jump on the success of Hinterland.
I'm available as a cultural consultant if the author requires it. ;)

A good read, set in beautiful North Wales with scenic descriptions. Well placed. Two main characters present an interesting balance, the police setting is realistic and I look forward to future stories in the series. I do, however, wonder why Simon used every possible scenario in one book? Lesbians, unwed pregnancy, alcoholics, missing person, racial tension, heavy smoking, bullying boss, historic mythology, Asian Muslims, autism, suicide, drowning, car chase - the only missing thing was a gay Jew in a wheelchair.

Confusing!

I am glad that this was free on kindle. As previous reviews have commented it was not proof read well - lots of errors which made it hard to read. Couldn't really take to any of the characters - especially Nick the alcoholic. Unrealistic that no-one else would have noticed his drink problem. The two murdered characters seemed unpleasant and they basically tried to pin the murders on anyone in the book who wasn't a policeman. Absolutely no empathy from any of the characters for the cleared suspect that killed himself. Towards the end of the book they made out that they had caught who was responsible - he wasn't - but there was no explanation as to why the car was where it was (their main reason for assuming it was hime) or what he was burning in the garden - again he ended up in hospital because of the main characters but no remorse. The actual murderer and reason was ridiculous to be honest - surely he would have done all of this earlier if that was the case. The author also obviously loves Wales but the scenic descriptions did nothing to add to the story at all - and just seemed to be page fillers. Very disappointing

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable.
Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story.
Can't wait to read more of what the author brings out next!!

This book deserves six stars, but the system only allows five. It has several red herrings and twist and turns that keep the reader guessing to the very end. A great if troubled main character and the others are interesting too. The descriptions of the North Wales surroundings and the locations are vivid. The whole thing is very well written. I couldn't hear to put it down.The next one is on pre-order. Thank you very much Simon.
