To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
First, let me say I'd give this player a 5/5 if they fixed a few things: 1) Due to a firmware/software issue in the player, it stutters sometimes when manually advancing to the next song. Normally this is caused by a memory buffer underrun. In computer software players, this is remedied by increasing the playback buffer to allow for a longer file retrieval time. On this device, you have no option to do so. I'm using a 256GB microSD card. 2) "Rebuild database" sometimes happens on its own when you turn the device on, which deletes some playlists. So if you leave the device unused for a week, then come back to use it, expect a 10 minute long "rebuilding database" operation followed by a few missing playlists. I'm syncing songs and playlists using MediaMonkey on Windows 10. Note: it did work just fine initially a week ago, but something happened from a week ago till now that caused it to 'rebuild database'. Since I didn't sync the device in the last week, it must be something firmware related.
Other things I'd like to see: a) option for light colored GUI theme. I like black but when my eyes are tired, it's hard to read. b) option for bolder and bigger GUI font size. c) add support for the open-source OGG audio format. There's no excuse for Sony not to have OGG support - it would cost them nothing in royalties. Every cheap $10 Chinese player has it.
Again, this is an almost perfect player for my needs but these issues need to be fixed or else it's a paperweight.
I absolutely love the hardware buttons on the side of the device because touchscreens are useless in wet or cold environments, particularly when running. This player can be operated enough to use while running in cold weather with gloves. I can't do that with any newer iPod touch since they are totally touchscreen driven (useless).
The player requires a custom USB cable to charge it. They included the custom cable but it's not USB-C or USB-A but something that Sony "invented" and now you have to carry this custom cable with you just to charge the device. And if you lose the cable or it breaks you will only be able to buy one from Sony for probably $50 or more. After I saw this non standard USB cable I did not want to even turn the player on to check it out because I knew that I will not keep it. So when it come to following industry standards Sony is still Sony - they are not going to follow no stinky standards.
After the Sony "Content Transfer" software crashed my Mac Pro for the third time, I decided to return the device. I listened to a few sample songs that sounded OK through my Etymotic headphones. But, I'm not going to allow any software on my computer that causes my entire system to reboot due to instability and according to Sony their Content Transfer software is the only way to move music files on to the device. I highly do not recommend this device and the Sony Content Transfer for Mac users!
