Very good sound noise cancellation very good only one problem Bluetooth interference i turned everything off soon as i sit walk around keeps turning off 2 modems in the house can only think of that other modern not mine to touch they need to work on that firmware updated nothing changed i have a pair of mdr 1rbt for many years no Bluetooth problems there. Read up on it anthing over 2.4ghz you will have problems

Sony WH-1000XM4 [Mixed feelings] - great refinements to an already excellent headphone

OK, so I've been anticipating the release of the XM4, wondering what Sony could possibly do to improve upon the 2-year king of ANC headphones the XM3, and I must say that Sony didn't surprise us with a stunning new look or with an explosive new performance worthy of an immediate upgrade, however, they did exactly what I suspected, they just made some refinements and additions to an already great headphone.

Here are my thoughts:
The New XM4 and the XM3 look remarkably identical so I will be using the Xm3 as a direct comparison. I will be approaching this review as one who has owned the XM3.

PACKAGING:
The packaging is great as always, Sony's package presentation is not the best out there but they do have a good sense of presentation which I like. Nothing new here it looks exactly like the XM3 with the same unbox experience.

ACCESSORIES:
In the box, you get a quick start guide, user manual, 360 Audio free trial code, a 3.5mm cable (with a right-angled head on one end) very short USB-C cable for charging the headphone, an Airline adaptor and the Sony WH-1000XM4 headphone. same box content like in the XM3 (except the free 360 audio trial code)

DESIGN & BIULD QUALITY:
Sony really played it safe here with the design, keeping nearly 1:1 with the XM3 you will hardly be able to easily spot the difference even from a short distance, however, when you come close you will see the small refinements on the body, you will notice the XM4 has a more matte finish which looks nicer to me. The overall body feels more seamless and nicer to the touch while the XM3 has a more reflective surface around the headband with wider gaps between segments. Build quality is excellent as always, no compromise just like the XM3.

FIT & COMFORT:
The XM4 coming in at 254g feels quite lightweight and comfortable to me although it's just 1g lighter than the XM3. it also has nice padding on the top arc to minimise pain from long hrs use, and the clamping force is very mild on my bald 😄 head and ears. I must say that they do feel different to the XM3, I prefer the feel and comfort of the XM4 it just feels a little bit more lightweight and comfortable.

Features and functionality:
The XM4 comes feature-rich just like the XM3, however, Sony played a game of addition and subtraction. They added new features like speak to chat which can be effective and useful. it works like a charm without you touching the headphone, I found that it also gets triggered when you cough heavy or clear your throat which can be a little annoying. The feature can be deactivated so not a problem. Also if you like to sing along to your favourite tune then speak to chat will break that habit.

Sony also added a proximity sensor which will pause the music once you take the headphones off. this feature is also very welcome in the sony headphone line, and it works effectively.

Another new feature Sony added is a multipoint pairing which enables you to connect and easily switches between 2 devices at a time (Be sure to update the headphone to the latest firmware to fix issues with this feature. One drawback to the multipoint pairing is that the LDAC feature is deactivated in multipoint mode 😢.

ANC on the XM4 is as Stellar as the XM3 but a little bit better, however, don't expect anything special here, it just sounds a little quieter in the higher - mid frequencies which make for a better ANC performance but not enough to make your jaw drop.

DESEE EXTREME and 360 Audio are nice features to have but personally haven't found them effective or useful.

Now I mentioned Sony playing a game of addition and subtraction, while they gave us all these new features they also took away some useful old ones like APTX and APTX HD which gave me the mixed feelings with the XM4. This doesn't matter if you are on an iPhone but android uses might find this very upsetting if you are into Bluetooth codecs and hi-res playback.

SOUND QUALITY:
once again the XM4 delivers a sound similar to the XM3 however when you pay close attention you will hear the subtle enhancements in the XM4 particularly in the soundstage and higher frequencies. The soundstage of the XM4 appears to be wider and instrument separation sounds nicer and pleasing on the XM4, also the treble range sounds more refined and natural on the XM4, I feel it renders the sound of drum cymbals, hi-hats, shakers, Jazz brush sticks, and other Hi-frequency instruments a lot better on the XM4 than on the XM3. however, I did notice a slight reduction in the upper bass punch from kick drums making the XM4 to have a less punchy sound in the bass. Comparing them stock for stock the XM3 has a more punchy bass sound.

Overall these refinements in the sound quality are subtle but they are there and If you know how to listen out for them you will come to prefer the sound of the XM4 better, but if you just listen passively you might not be able to easily tell the difference, both headphones perform well in hip-hop, pop, jazz, rock and a lot more genres.

SHOULD I UPGRADE?:
I already have the XM3 and I love them should I go ahead and upgrade to the XM4? to help you answer that question here are some features to take seriously
- Multipoint pairing
- Proximity sensor
- Speak to chat (can be a good or bad thing)
- NO APTX or APTX HD (android users)

Here are a few features to NOT take seriously.
- ANC (relatively on par with the XM3)
- DESEE Extreme (not much difference in its effectiveness)
- 360 Audio (Available on other headphones)
- LDAC (already on the XM3, only beneficial to select android users)

It's not a lot of great stuff to prompt an immediate upgrade and because the design of the headphone looks remarkably identical, having the XM4 alongside the XM3 feels more like I just had a major firmware update to my already existing headphone, it doesn't give you the full satisfaction of a new buy just like you get between the Bose QC35 and the 700 (although different headphones) you get the idea.

CONCLUSION
If you are new to Sony's 1000X headphones then just go ahead and buy the XM4 it's an overall much better experience. I now personally like the Sony WH-1000XM4 and will use my XM3 less and less maybe will give it away soon. All the minor improvements sum up together to make yet another New King of ANC while the XM3 follows closely behind.

MultiPoint can't use LDAC, So you are stuck with AAC or SBC if you wish to use this feature and no APTX or APTX HD,

Was a decent upgrade from my XM2's but if you dont wish to use speak to talk or any of the new features then save your Money and get yourself a pair of XM3's for over £100 Less

An dieser Stelle wollte ich eigentlich über ausführliche Vergleiche mit den Bose QC20 und QC35 berichten. Um darauf nicht ganz zu verzichten kurz das Wesentliche: Was das ANC angeht, sind die XM4 beiden Bose QC-Modellen deutlich überlegen, da gibt es gar keine Diskussion. Die XM4 schaffen es, Geräusche komplett auszublenden, die bei den QC noch durchkommen. Erkauft wird das leider mit einem etwas höheren "Rauschen", was jedoch akzeptabel ist, spätestens wenn man zusätzlich Musik laufen lässt.

Doch nun zu dem einen Stern und dem Grund, warum ich die XM4 nach etwas mehr als einem Tag wieder zurückschicke, und bei den QC35 bleibe bzw. nun die Bose 700 probieren werden: Nach mehreren Stunden Nutzung (ich trage die Kopfhörer u.a. beim Arbeiten im Home Office) werden sehr laute "Störgeräusche" durch den Kopfhörer erzeugt. Es ist hierbei egal, ob der Zuspieler per BT oder Klinkenkabel angeschlossen ist, oder gar kein Zuspieler verbunden ist. Da das schwer zu beschreiben (und noch schwerer zu glauben) ist, habe ich den Ton der Kopfhörer aufgenommen. Bei Youtube findet man es unter dem Titel "Sony WH-1000XM4 static/crackling noise issue after long usage". Die Störgeräusche verschwinden, sobald man das ANC abschaltet.

Im Internet existieren zahlreiche Berichte, die den Vorgänger WH-1000XM3 betreffen. Offenbar haben die XM4 das Problem übernommen - extrem ärgerlich. Leider gibt es keine anerkannte Ursache und damit auch keine Problemlösung. Wer plant, seinen ANC-Kopfhörer mehrere Stunden am Stück zu tragen, sollte um die XM3 und XM4 also lieber einen großen Bogen machen.

Having owned the XM3 I was very disappointed with this new version. The noise cancelling appears identical, and the sound signature indiscernible from the previous model. If anything, the XM3 sound is of higher quality with slightly more base on the default equalizer settings, which I prefer.

This headphone is bigger compared to the previous model, and for me they felt loose with the top of my ear hitting the top of the earcups. This was very uncomfortable. The XM3 don't have the same issue.

There are a number of new features, however I question how much value they really add. For instance, the talk to pause feature is no where near as good as the advert suggests. It pauses after a few seconds delay and not instantly. It's far easier just to pause the headphones or take them off altogether. The multi-device connectivity has issues, given switching from one device to another is not instant.

Ultimately, this is absolutely not worth the price difference compared to the XM3. The XM3 works equally as well, and in fact I found them to have better sound and more comfortable fit.

📲FUNZIONALITA’ E DETTAGLI:

🔅Non sono un audiofilo né un tecnico del suono, ma lavoro al computer 8 ore ogni giorno e mi piace ascoltare la musica nei momenti più stressanti. Indosso gli occhiali e sono pendolare, dunque porto le cuffie tante ore, in giro per mezzi, negozi, auto, ufficio e con l’asticella dell’occhiale sempre presente.
Per questo motivo avevo optato dopo lunghissime ricerche e prove per le Sony WH-1000XM3 e ora che è uscito il nuovo modello, le 1000XM4 non ho resistito dal prenderle. Per chi non sapesse di cosa stiamo parlando, queste sono al momento e a parere mio l’élite fra le cuffie wireless con cancellazione del rumore sotto ogni punto di vista, eccetto forse le chiamate.

Giudizio finale, l’upgrade da XM3 a XM4 vale la pena? A mio parere sì e vi spiego perché:

🔅 Esteticamente sono molto simili al vecchio modello, le WH-1000XM3, ma nascondono nuove caratteristiche come lo standard DSEE Extreme per l’upscaling delle tracce audio compresse.

Ma che cos’è questo DSEE HX audio? È una tecnologia di casa Sony sviluppata per ottenere il massimo da ogni traccia audio, utilizzando dei modelli di machine learning. I file mp3 o AAC sono buoni per compattare le canzoni in poco posto, però perdono in qualità. Formati più prestanti come FLAC e WAV invece mantengono una elevata qualità dell’audio però sono più grandi in dimensioni. Alcune canzoni anche di servizi di streaming sono in realtà immagazzinate in formato mp3 e in questo entra in gioco il DSEE Extreme: è un algoritmo che riconosce lo spettro sonoro della canzone ed esegue un “upscaling”, ovvero una sorta di trasformazione nell’audio, seguendo modelli complessi, che permette di dare più corpo alle canzoni con bassa qualità di partenza.
Sicuramente la stessa traccia in mp3 sulle XM3 e sulle XM4 suona completamente diversa. Quella delle XM4 si avvicina alla qualità audio del formato audio completo.

Quindi questo DSEE funziona? Sì, eccome, soprattutto ascoltando servizi di streaming musicale. Per alcune canzoni potrebbe non cambiare niente, perché sono già in alta risoluzione, ma ci assicura di avere sempre un ascolto al massimo delle potenzialità.

Unica pecca: Non funziona se si sta impostando manualmente una equalizzazione nelle cuffie. In ogni caso si gestisce tutto divinamente mediante app.

🔅 Continuando a parlare di qualità sonora delle tracce, queste nuove cuffie rispetto al modello vecchio supportano la codifica LDAC, che porta il bitrate massimo fino a 990kbps e fidatevi, una volta provato non tornate più indietro. Inoltre sono compatibile con il formato audio 360 reality.

Ancora, rispetto alle XM3 hanno la tecnologie Bluetooth multipoint: non solo si può connettere a più dispositivi contemporaneamente, magari allo smartphone personale e a quello del lavoro, ma se per esempio siamo in chiamata su un dispositivo e arriva una telefonata sull’altro e rispondiamo, la prima chiamata viene messa in attesa e non chiusa, come spesso succede con altri dispositivi multipoint.
Si collegano le cuffie a due telefoni e queste XM4 riescono a capire quale stiamo utilizzando e passare quindi in automatico da uno all’altro. Magari ascoltiamo Spotify su un telefono e arriva la chiamata sull’altro: con un tocco in cuffia si risponde alla chiamata e Spotify va in pausa. Finita la chiamata la musica dal primo telefono riprende.

🔅 COMODITÀ E MATERIALI:
Fra le XM3 e XM4 si fa fatica a capire quale è quale. Il materiale è sempre plastica di altissima qualità e le imbottiture sulle orecchie e sull’arco superiore sono in finta pelle. Sembrano alquanto solide e l’isolamento fisico dato dalla struttura del padiglione attorno all’orecchio è veramente ottimo.

La cosa che ho preferito? Risultano estremamente comode anche indossate per tanto tempo (4 ore e non sentirle proprio).
Sui padiglioni ci sono i classici tasti funzione per accensione e il tasto custom di cui discuterò a fine recensione. C’è il foro per jack da 3.5mm e la USB-C superiore per la ricarica. Ancora una volta le prese sono totalmente esposte pertanto non c’è alcun tipo di impermeabilità e la porta type-C rivolta verso l’alto si espone pericolosamente anche alla minima goccia di pioggia. Sony, ma perché! La musica si ascolta anche se piove! E questo le BOCCIA completamente per l’uso sport.

La superficie esterna dei padiglioni è touch e si possono regolare le funzioni esattamente come sulle XM3 per mettere in pausa, play, canzone successiva o precedente, regolar eia volume di canzoni e chiamate, rispondere o chiudere la chiamata.

🔅 Rispetto alle WH-1000XM3 c’è un nuovo SoC che porta la cancellazione attiva del rumore ad un livello superiore. Sinceramente per le vecchie XM3 la cancellazione era buona ma in casa Bose avevo trovato di meglio. Queste WH-1000XM4, con il loro processore QNe1 riescono a campionare talmente tanti dati dall’ambiente esterno che la cancellazione attiva del rumore è spaziale.
Sente i rumori ambientali e regola automaticamente la cancellazione, in modo da non avere sempre lo stesso “tappo” di cancellazione massima anche quando non serve (e di questo la batteria ne giova solo!).

🔅FUNZIONALITÀ:
Per riassumere: ANC il top e c’è il riconoscimento vocale per mettere in pausa la musica quando si parla. Questo Speak-to-Chat è sia un pregio che un difetto: se passa qualcuno a chiedere indicazioni o volete salutare un vecchio amico basta che parliate voi e le cuffie si fermano. Non hanno paura invece della solita anziana sull’autobus che urla accanto a noi perché imparano a riconoscere selettivamente la nostra voce anche in mezzo a del gran frastuono.
Questo però è un difetto per chi come me canticchia anche sottovoce le proprie canzoni nei ritornelli clou. La musica andrà in pausa PROPRIO in quel momento. Eh si, che fastidio! Comunque questa funzione l'ho trovata più volte comoda che fastidiosa.
Se però ascoltate spesso podcast o streamer che vi fanno ridere, beh, disattivate la funzionalità: vanno in pausa anche con una risatina!

Le funzionalità di queste nuove XM4 surclassano il modello precedente, soprattuto sull’ANC. Ma vediamolo più nel dettaglio: la cancellazione del rumore di queste WH-1000XM4 agisce in maniera completamente automatica e discreta. La cancellazione è potentissima sulle medie frequenze che sono i classici rumori fastidiosi di ventilatori, condizionatori, automobili all’esterno. Anche solo mettendo un po’ di lo-fi a basso volume per concentrarsi, l’ambiente esterno scompare del tutto.
Ma come funziona? La tecnologia è la Dual Noise Sensor: ogni padiglione presenta due microfoni ciascuno, devoluti entrambi all’ascolto di suoni esterni. I dati, campionati più di 700 volte al secondo, vengono inviati al chip QN1 che elabora i suoni e li abbatte all’interno della cuffia.

Per quanto riguarda i rumori acuti, come un mezzo che fa retromarcia, del vento che ulula o le voci acute della vicina di tavolo al bar, beh, penetrano un po’ ma sicuramente queste cuffie isolano meglio di qualsiasi altra cuffia abbia mai provato.

Ma Sony si è spinta oltre: perché campionare ogni spazio in cui ascoltiamo la musica se stiamo spesso negli stessi spazi? Se si concede l’accesso alla geolocalizzazione le cuffie salvano dei protocolli di ANC relativi ad ogni luogo, in modo da cancellare i rumori abituali di quel luogo appena ci arriviamo.
A lavoro per esempio ci sono molti computer che lavorano al massimo e c’è sempre rumore di ventole. Stando spesso lì le cuffie hanno imparato ad associare il suono a quel luogo e appena le indosso con un suono mi avvisano che hanno riconosciuto il luogo e la cancellazione è migliore rispetto alle prime volte che le ho indossate nello stesso punto.
Se non prende il GPS o non volete accenderlo per risparmiare batteria, si possono attivare manualmente i preset ANC precedentemente imparati dall’app Headphone Connect

Altre funzionalità riguardano lo stop automatico della musica quando si tolgono le cuffie, e il play automatico quando si reindossano. Per risparmiare la batteria hanno un timeout di spegnimento automatico.

🔅HARDWARE AUDIO:
Driver da 40mm identici a quelli montati su WH-1000XM3. In entrambe le cuffie, sia le vecchie che queste nuove WH-1000XM4 hanno un suono caldo, bilanciato ed un soundstage esteso e dettagliato.
Non c’è supporto aptX HD, ma il codec LDAC è divino. Come detto inizialmente rispetto alle XM3 a livello sonoro la differenza maggiore è il DSEE Extreme per migliorare l’audio delle tracce compresse. Il formato 360 Reality Audio di Sony fatica ancora a venire a galla sul mercato amatoriale, ma se trovate qualche traccia con quel codec suonano al massimo della loro capacità.
Giusto per avere una idea del transfer massimo in bitrate, queste cuffie supportano gli standard SBC, aptX, AAC e LDAC, ma non aptX HD. Lo standard AAC arriva fino circa 250kbps, SBS fino 320kbps, aptX fino circa 353kbps e LDAC fino a 990kbps. A metà strada c’è aptX HD con 576kbps. Si vede che Sony ha deciso che il salto da utilizzatore amatoriale ad “audiofilo” amatoriale era un salto degno di raggiungere le codifiche LDAC e dunque hanno escluso l’aptX HD. Poco male, si fa anche senza, la qualità audio è estrema in ogni caso.

Il volume massimo è estremamente soddisfacente, praticamente l’ho messo solo per provarlo e mai più lo raggiungerò. Ma mi ha fatto notare un problema: chi è accanto a voi sente cosa ascoltate.
L’isolamento dall’esterno all’interno è divino, mentre il contrario non lo è. Per me che ascolto musica a medio basso volume vanno bene anche in ufficio, ma già poco oltre al volume medio si sente fuori dalla cuffia, dunque bocciato l’uso in biblioteca o accanto ad altre persone in un ambiente silenzioso.

🔅AUTONOMIA:
Uguale alle vecchie XM3. Quelle solite 40 ore senza ANC e volume medio basso le fanno lisce come l’olio. Con ANC reggono le 30 re dichiarate ma nulla di più.
Comunque l’autonomia è pressoché illimitata perché hanno la RICARICA RAPIDA. In 10 minuti di ricarica guadagniamo 10 ore di autonomia.
Anche solo collegandole in fretta e furia prima di uscire di casa, se ci siamo scordati di caricarle, magari mentre ci laviamo i denti, abbiamo l’autonomia per la giornata. La ricarica completa richiede invece 3 ore.

Magari speravate in un miglioramento rispetto al modello precedente, però i miglioramenti nei sensori, nel rilevamento della voce e nell’ANC sono andati a tamponare il miglioramento che c’è stato nella batteria, dunque sembra che sia andata in patta, ma non è così. Offrono di più senza nulla togliere a quello che c’era prima.

Parlando di ANC e di autonomia personalmente prima di provare queste nuove WH-1000XM4 la mia preferenza sul ANC era per le Bose NC 700, che hanno solo 20 re di autonomia. Queste non solo hanno 10 ore di autonomia in più e la ricarica rapida, ma hanno surclassato le Bose nella cancellazione del rumore.

🔅CHIAMATE:
Ehh, il punto dolente. Le chiamate non sono proprio l’ideale perché il microfono non ha la migliore qualità sul mercato. A volte gracchia o rende il suono metallizzato se ci sono molti rumori di sottofondo da cancellare. L’audio arriva comunque ben pulito, ma lo step di pulizia digitale della nostra voce dai rumori esterni ha un costo in qualità audio che altri devices sul mercato non hanno.

🔅ASSISTENTE VOCALE O ANC?
Questo è il dilemma del tasto funzione personalizzabile (o “Custom”). Fuori ci sono solo due tasti fisici, questo e il tasto di accensione. Mediante app si può scegliere se associare il tasto custom O al controllo del noise cancelling (on/off) O all’attivazione dell’assistente vocale.
Quindi o vi tenete l’assistente per chiamate, texting, notifiche e indicazioni stradali, oppure vi mettete la possibilità di regolare l’ANC.
Io non ho avuto dubbi vedendo la qualità dell’ANC e l’autonomia delle cuffie: ANC sempre acceso e assistente in cuffia!

🔅A CHI LE CONSIGLIO:
Le consiglio a chi vuole il miglior sistema di cancellazione attiva del rumore sul mercato. A chi vuole delle cuffie estremamente comodi e dalla massima qualità audio per una cuffia bluetooth. A chi vuole un hardware ed un software solido e che segue le nostre personalizzazioni, qualcosa che si plasmi con noi e per noi.

A CHI LE SCONSIGLIO:
A chi pensa di farci sport. A chi non può farne a meno anche durante le giornate leggermente piovose o molto umide, magari in monopattino o in bici per il tragitto stazione-lavoro. A chi vuole andarci in posti pericolosi come in palestra o in spiaggia. Tutto sempre per la maledetta impermeabilità che non c’è.

💸PREZZO:

Le ho prenotate al prezzo minimo garantito durante il lancio, che è stato di 379,00€.
Devo dire la verità, queste come le vecchie XM3 e tutte le cuffie top di gamma wireless le ho trovate un po’ care. Secondo me 300€ erano il prezzo giusto e spero che scendano rapidamente.

Però cosa vuoi dire, sono il meglio che c’è, alla fine uno si adatta e la spesa la fa..
