Product description

Style Name:Lopper

Product Description

The Spear and Jackson razorsharp heavy duty telescopic ratchet anvil lopper is ideal for cutting thicker and harder branches and easily handles a branch 50 mm in diameter. These loppers feature a ratchet action which provides a mechanical advantage by enhancing the spring loaded cutting blade towards the anvil blade in short steps to complete the cut with a minimum of effort. Simply open the handles to activate the ratchet, then close the handle below the cutting blade until the audible click, open again until the next click and repeat the process. The PTFE coated SK5 carbon steel cutting blade gives lasting sharpness, reduces friction during cutting and provides resistance to rust. The anvil blade is made from a softer metal to avoid damage to the cutting blade and is serrated to stop the branch twisting during the cut. Simple to operate twist and lock telescopic handles extend from 710 mm to 1030 mm for additional reach when required and are made from tubular aluminium to remain as light as possible without compromising on strength. The handles are finished with soft-feel non-slip grips for comfort and safety during use. This lopper also has a locking catch for safe storage and transportation.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality ratchet loppers - a review after 2 years use (with video demo of ratchet system)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 17 November 2020
In short, I like them - after 2 years use, they are still in good condition and good working order, and work as well as they did on day one.

I would agree with others...there is a lot more opening and closing than with normal loppers due to the ratchet system (see video if you are not sure what this refers to), and this is irritating if you are only chopping something which is half the width of the jaws. My wife tells me how stupid this is most times she uses them too!

However, they perform well...and of course the whole point of the ratchet thing is that you don’t have to use much force to cut through thick branches and brambles etc. If you do have to put loads of effort in, then you are probably pushing it and should be getting a saw out. They are best used in combination with some hand snippers, to save time on the smaller stuff.

They are a bit unwieldy when extended, and opening and closing, when up a ladder, in a tight space is not much fun as you have to open them a fair bit wider when extended.

Check the pic to see how they have fared over this time. Pretty well really, the only issue is the plastic casing on one handle has loosened and moves around when extending them.

All in all, a good quality tool at a decent price and would recommend for vegetation too big for hand snippers, but not thick enough to need a saw, like thick established brambles, and small branches from trees. etc. One star removed for the wasted effort required, and the very minor casing issue.
