It contains the stuff I wish I had known in the first years of my career. Even though I am in the last decade of my career I can honestly say that the lessons in this book have just as much impact. I've just got less time to take advantage of what I've learned.
Squiggly Careers is different from most of the business books I have read. Most of them are "This worked for ME, it'll work for you"!
The book isn't like that. It is all about YOU and YOUR values YOUR strengths, YOUR confidence and how YOU connect with other people. It contains a number of techniques to help you find what your values and strengths are and you may be surprised at what you find out about yourself.
Understanding your values will help you understand why you do or don't gel with colleagues, feel part of the culture etc.
The exercises to identify your super strengths were real eye openers for me and very affective.
The section on "Networking" and understanding where you are across the 4 categories (Consumer, Contributed, Connecter, Creator) was particularly interesting. I recommend checking your assessment of where you place yourself on this scale with someone who knows you well. This is especially true if you lack self confidence.
As I've already said I wish I'd known this stuff at the beginning of my career. For that reason I've bought 4 copies of this book near the end of may career to give to my nieces so they can be in the best position at the start of theirs.
I would love to see the lessons in this book adapted for schools careers lessons, people being helped by The Princes Trust, and people who have gone through the prison system and want to make a fresh start.

This book couldn’t have been read at a better time for me or for any other person facing a career conundrum. The Squiggly Career is a practical handbook filled with tools, research, actionable tips and a healthy mix of examples drawn from the author’s experiences.
Focusing on five core skills that the authors have identified, the book helps you to firstly embrace then scale your squiggle by considering your:
💬 Super strengths
💬 Values
💬 Confidence
💬 Networks
💬 and Future Possibilities.
Throughout the book you are encouraged to take active ownership, not only through the completing of the many exercises it provides but by changing your mindset to a 'growth mindset'.
That being said, this isn’t a light read by the beach. For me, you’d need a writing surface, a couple of highlighters and a sharpened pencil. What I enjoyed most was the super useful chapter summaries as well as the suggestions that go beyond the page such as vision boards and personal manifestos.
It might sound extensive but this book deserves this labour. Question is, are you ready to invest the time, energy and effort into your career future now? I recommend this book to everyone I know!

What's particularly notable about a book like this, is that you know straight away that you are reading the words of two people who have been ON the squiggly career path, and they're sharing their wisdom. We're following real leaders on this journey!
