4.0 out of 5 starsIntrigue in London, 1941.
Reviewed in Australia on 8 July 2020
(Amazon First Reads - July 2020.) This historical mystery by T.P. Fielding, an easily read mystery, full of intrigue, peopled by believable characters, I found to be most enjoyable. The author is an accomplished writer who easily and firmly set the scene in wartime London, especially in and around Buckingham Palace. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 starsslow to start - worth hanging in there
Reviewed in Australia on 11 December 2020
Found this book a little hard to get my teeth into it. Guy Harford, the main character, is an artist well settled into life in Tangier. However, following a diplomatic incident in which he became involved, he was recalled to London. The real reason for this does not come to light until later in the book. On his return, Guy was given employment in Buckingham Palace and was requesting to " cover-up" the death of a colleague, whom Guy is convinced did not suicide, but may have been murdered. When the plot finally thickens towards the end, Guy's predictions proved to be correct.

The reader of the book has a very monotone voice with no expression in it. I found it so hard to follow that I gave up after only about 2 chapters. Glad I wasn't paying but also realised why it was free.

A novel for the 1940s , old fashioned and long winded. The plot unfolded but so slowly I couldn’t be bothered finishing it

The writing style was not for me and I found this book rather uninteresting. It is unusual for me not to finish a book but I have to admit that at 25% into the book I decided that I was bored enough and removed the download.

I abandoned this book after a couple of chapters. The authors writing style is not for me. I'm glad I got it free as it's not worthy of one star in my opinion. I have removed it from my kindle.

Chose this as my Amazon first reads selection because it sounded different and reviews were good. I found the characters to be unbelievable with ridiculous names, the plot to be thin and the action slow. Can’t recommend.

I hate not finishing a book, but I couldn’t make myself read this. There wasn’t a single character I rooted for, and I made it further than half way and felt like it still wasn’t going anywhere

Sorry but despite other reviews I couldn’t get past the first chapter. I am normally a huge fan of thrillers set in historical contexts but the writing is dull and peppered with cliches. Maybe I should have stuck with it but really nothing hooked me in.
