4.0 out of 5 starsIntrigue in London, 1941.
Reviewed in Australia on 8 July 2020
(Amazon First Reads - July 2020.) This historical mystery by T.P. Fielding, an easily read mystery, full of intrigue, peopled by believable characters, I found to be most enjoyable. The author is an accomplished writer who easily and firmly set the scene in wartime London, especially in and around Buckingham Palace. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 starsslow to start - worth hanging in there
Reviewed in Australia on 11 December 2020
Found this book a little hard to get my teeth into it. Guy Harford, the main character, is an artist well settled into life in Tangier. However, following a diplomatic incident in which he became involved, he was recalled to London. The real reason for this does not come to light until later in the book. On his return, Guy was given employment in Buckingham Palace and was requesting to " cover-up" the death of a colleague, whom Guy is convinced did not suicide, but may have been murdered. When the plot finally thickens towards the end, Guy's predictions proved to be correct.

3.0 out of 5 stars A reasonable romp but not serious

I did finish the book but i felt it was a mixture of Jeeves type stereotypes and a confusing list of characters many of which we knew little about and were instantly forgettable. The central characters were slightly better but it couldn’t really decide it it was a romp or had serious issues. Quite well written but it was the narrative that needed more work to be believable or make us care about outcomes.

3.0 out of 5 stars I prefer the Miss Dimont series

Sorry, but I didnt like he slur on our Royal family. Nor did I think the characters in this book were properly flushed out, although Rodie - the female cat burglar - had great potential. We didnt seem to get beneath the surface of anyone. Potentially a clever plot but Guy just didnt cut the mustard as a protagonist and it was all a bit flat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Deceit and double dealing in WW2

It took me a while to get into this book, being irritated by hierarchy and even nastiness within some of the palace staff and the impossible wealth and entitlement of many of the characters trying for personal advancement. However the protagonist is engaging and the assistance given is unexpected if fanciful, so in the end I would have to say I enjoyed this book and read the second half much more quickly!

3.0 out of 5 stars Murder mystery based in war torn London

An interesting idea, having famous names on the periphery of the story helps to ground it and the rich detail helps bring war torn London to life. However for me the short chapters broke up the flow of the story and I found I didn't really like the main protagonist or much care who killed Ed.

I don't know whether it was a case of not really being in the mood for reading, but when reading this half the time I hadn't much idea of what was going on and really I didn't care. Sorry, I'm sure others will love it, but it wasn't really for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bit heavy.

I thought this book was a comic story, but it turned out not. Slow to start, it did pick up in pace later. All in all a reasonable story, especially given the suspicious death of the Duke of Gloucester later due to flying into a Scottish mountain.

I have read a number of this author's previous books and enjoyed them. But I could not engage with the characters and plot in this book. The plot seemed unrealistic and the novel did not read well. Disappointing.

A decent enough story but everybody acted very politely. I think during wartime old fashion valves would be forgotten. Some of the characters stories were left with on ending, maybe a second book in in the offering. The

Whilst the writing doesn't flow the real facts upon which the story is based are fascinating. Clearly well researched and with a sense of it's time we'll worth a read but not as a murder mystery

Not a bad plot. But difficult to have any attraction to the upper crust misfits populating the tale. His depiction of ordinary people is irritatingly patronising and clueless. But. I read it to the end so I have to say the plot kept me interested.
