This does not work, I wasted 14 bales and two months of time and never got one iota of heat. Not wanting to use chemical fertilizer I used blood meal first and when that didn’t work I tried chicken manure and when that didn’t work I gave up and purchased the lawn fertilizer recommended in the book. And when that didn’t work, I tried blood meal one more time. Joel Karsten is a fraud
Covers the how too well but this method requires an excessive amount of watering and our community garden does now allow auto timers as Gardner’s share faucets. Author spends too many words, pages touting himself and idea. We also found that it didn’t cut back on weeding as the straw bales sprouted grass.
We recently had some large ornamental trees taken down due to age and crowding. I have a lot of space I don't know how the sun is going to impact, and plans to plant replacements in the fall. What's a gardener to do but look into temporary planting structures that help generate compost to help break down the material left in the ground? I'm excited to give this a go once my back yard isn't covered by snow.
I haven't put the content to the test yet, but I'm very excited to think about it. Making a list of things I will need to plant a straw bale garden. The book seems very complete, has good pictures, and information which will probabaly answer all your questions before you can even ask them.
