About the Author

Tania Blanchard writes historical fiction inspired by her family history. She grew up listening to her grandparents’ fascinating tales of life during World War Two and migrating to Australia. Tania Blanchard is an author and writes historical fiction inspired by her family history. Coming from a family with rich cultural heritage, stories have always been in her blood. She grew up listening to her grandparents’ fascinating tales of life during World War Two and migration to Australia. So it comes as no great surprise that besides writing and reading, her other great passion is history.

Her first novel, 'The Girl from Munich', was a runaway bestseller and shortlisted for the ABIA New Writers’ Award. Her other novels, 'Suitcase of Dreams' and 'Letters from Berlin', followed soon after. Her fourth book, ‘Echoes of War,’ will be released in September 2021. All her novels are inspired by family stories.

Tania lives in Sydney with her husband and three children where she can often be found in the kitchen, cooking up a storm for her family, including her two cheeky but lovable dogs who think they’re human too.

European dreams of migrating to Australia in 1950's

How difficult was it for these people to settled into Australian. Just to learn a completely new language and converse with it must have been a mammoth difficulty. Unfortunatly yes, people did tell these migrants, " go back to where you came from!!" As Aussies, we had absolutely no idea of the life they had endured in Europe during the war and post war. We were quite ignorant of their past. We should salute these migrants as they have settled here and contributed much to our society. This book should be a " must read" for all Aussies born here, especially in the 40's and latter years.

I remember growing up with migrants arriving in Australia, later than this family story begins, I found it interesting to read about their view of Australia, and their struggles . They took one step forward to making a better life then 2 backwards,but they pushed on and worked hard, Australia has much to thank those early migrants for. A wonderful family story of survival, from making a new life from nothing in a country that wasn't all that easy to come to grips with and understand.
