Purpose:
Plex server for direct play.
Background:
I've never owned a NAS box. I have a retired gaming PC that I still use a Plex Server. It's a Shuttle SZ87R6 that you see on the bottom of the server rack (still being set up). It has a 4790k / 16gb ram / gtx 950 / storage: 15TB + 1 TB ssd Samsung Evo 860 for cache/unpacking rars.
Review
I actually really wanted the RS1220+, but it was announced back in September 2019 and there hasn't been a whisper since. Might be vaporware at this point. So I got the RS820+.
I put in 3 12TB WD white label drives that I had saved up. They were all unused. The parity check took 28 hours.
I bought one more 12TB WD white label and added it a week or so later. Adding that additional drive took north of 32+ hours. And for the record I had not uploaded or stored any files either.
I've tested it here and there and it's been stable so far.
I added 16gb ram. I just bought the cheapest SO-DIMM Series DDR4 2666 branded ram module I could find. At the time it was G.SKILL. Non-ECC since the RS820+ does not support ECC.
Next Steps:
I want to keep this 10g so I will eventually get Synology E10M20-T1
For now I will aggregate the existing 4 ports for 4GBe
The Synology will be Direct Play 4k/8k movies.
The Shuttle will be for my wife's iPad transcoding (Plex hardware acceleration) when she watches Real Housewives or 4k RomComs/etc.
