TLDR: Right off the bat, for those looking for a quick answer, I highly recommend buying this Synology model over the others due to it's extremely good price to performance ratio. You won't find a better price for what you get with any of the others. Trust me, I spent two years looking into these NAS units.
Now into the intricate details this unit deserves:
- PC Specs -
CPU: Intel Celeron J4025 Dual Core @ 2 GHz (Can overclock to 2.9GHz, but I haven't figured out how yet)
RAM: 2GB (2048 MB) DDR4, which is actually removable and expandable up to 6GB.
OS: Custom Linux
The upgradeable 2GB of RAM is probably what sealed the deal for me. All cheaper options only offer smaller portions that are soldered on, meaning you're stuck with it until the unit is too slow and obsolete for the larger file sizes and more demanding use applications of the future. If you have plans to use this as a website or web app server, having a modular NAS is KEY. You will need the ability to expand WITH your project- whatever it is.
The 2GB included is plenty for my current use case, which is simply for scheduled automatic backups. The max RAM usage I've seen while running two simultaneous backups was about 43%, which leaves a healthy margin un-used should I decide to add on another service later on, like Plex.
For your hard drives, make sure to get 7200RPM drives that are made for NAS. They are designed to run 24/7 with an extremely low rate of error. SSDs are definitely not needed unless you are backing up large drives (2TB+) and would be extremely expensive. The NAS comes with dual ethernet ports to help distribute the network load in case that is a bottleneck for you.
- Pricing-
This Model definitely doesn't win the "Lowest price" cake, but at $300 that's not necessarily a bad thing. The cheapest NAS you could safely buy is the QNAP TR-002 2 Bay for $147, but unfortunately they didn't list their full specs anywhere, which made it impossible for me to rank it on my list, and sketched me out from trying it. The QNAP may have had a shot at making the top of my list, but who knows what CPU is included, how much RAM is included, and is it soldered in or not?
- Ease of use -
This was an easy setup for me as an experienced technology user. I'm used to setting up various OS systems and this was a more streamlined setup than I'm used to. You simply log in via it's web interface with a web browser and follow the simple setup steps. I'm glad Synology took the effort to make it easier for first time users, but you still may need some help from them to set up individual settings, as the included instructions and the DSM Help app inside the OS don't include as much information as I would like. I had to poke around the software to find some settings, and some things (Like overclocking the CPU), I never did find.
- Stability -
Thus far, with 23 days and 17 hours of uptime, I have yet to experience any problems that could hinder my backups or put my data in jeopardy. It's been nothing but smooth sailing. I have been using Synology's app, "Active Backup for Business" to back up all three of my computers. I was impressed that the software supports partial backups, meaning you can turn off a computer mid-backup, and resume the backup upon reboot. This is essential for computers with extremely large hard drives which are not desired to be running 24/7. The backup software made it incredibly easy to install the client software on each computer and set up a unique or similar backup schedule for each one. I've already done many backups (I have them scheduled for every other day) and I also did a restore to make sure it worked successfully.
- What you can use this for -
I'm not sure I'm prepared to write down every single use case, that is how many options you have with this NAS. I will list some of the most popular available packages though:
- Multiple backup programs
- Antiviruses
- Media servers (Including Plex)
- Web server package (Installs Nginx, Apache, and PHP)
- Wordpress
- Mail servers
- VPN server
- Chat server
- And way more
And for developers, you can install whatever framework or library you need.
- Docker
- Git
- Node.js
- Pearl
- PHP
- PHP MyAdmin
- Python
- And a lot more
This is a true NAS, and I'm glad Synology didn't cut usability for simplicity sake. The OS is still very simple and easy to navigate, but can also be used for advanced features. For example, terminal isn't available to access from the desktop, but you can enable SSH in the control panel and access terminal commands that way.
To sum it up, as far at price to performance goes, this easily takes the gold plaque. It has a low-mid range price with mid-high range performance that is rare to find nowadays.

A NAS isn't for everyone, but more people should consider it. The Synology DSM UI is best in class and fairly easy to use, even for beginners. I would highly encourage new users to spend some time on YouTube and watch the getting started videos, so save headaches later on.
Setting up the NAS was very easy. I migrated my two hard drives from my older unit and it detected the existing array. I had intended to start fresh though, so I wiped the array and enabled some of the new features which will allow me to replace one of my hard drives with a larger capacity and be able to use this extra space. Doing this was very fast. Having the two LAN ports hasn't been as useful as I hoped, but when bridged and moving a lot of content, it has increased the throughput.
My big complaint with my older unit was how SLOW it was. It only had 128MB of RAM though and the CPU was very old. This DS220+ is blazing fast in comparison. Downloading new apps in DSM is very quick and operations like indexing that used to take hours, are now done in minutes. I really appreciate the smaller touches and new Synology apps that make it easier to connect to the NAS.
The only small complaint I have is that the backup software doesn't support Symbolic Link folders. I have a collection of Symbolic Links (pointers to other folders - like a short cut, but more effective) which I am unable to backup. I can copy them to the NAS, but now changes made in those folders are not synced. I see this is a known issue, so hopefully Synology will get a solution in place.
Overall, it has been a great experience. The DSM UI is solid, the build quality of the NAS feels solid, it is whisper quiet and I have peace of mind that my house is secure (surveillance recordings), my data is backed up and redundant, and my media library is available from any device in the house.

A FAVOR:
- Active Backup permite tener sincronizado el cotenido de las computadoras conectadas en la red local (LAN) con este dispositivo de almacenamiento;
- DS-Audio para escuchar tu colección de música tanto local como remotamente;
- Moments ó Photo-Station, para guardar y compartir todas tus fotos escaneadas, digitales, respalda bien las fotos y videos de smartphones y tabletas; en mi caso en una Smart-TV pude ver fotos en varios formatos;
- VideoStation para hacer "streaming" de videos caseros tomados con "HandyCam" en formato MTS, MP4 o tu colección de películas (soporta MKV), igual de forma local (puedes conectar varias "Smar-TV" a tu LAN y ver las películas almacenadas), así como desde internet usando la aplicación DS-Video;
- Servidor DHCP para gestión de red LAN;
- Servidor DNS para dominios;
- Servidor Web "Apache" HTML (también se pueden instalar versiones de PHP desde la 7.0 a la 7.4), con la posibilidad de hospedar varios sitios web simultáneamente (se pueden instalar gestores de contenido como "Drupal", "Joomla", "Wordpress"), así como blogs;
- Servidor de bases de datos "MariaDB-10" (totalmente compatible con MySQL);
- Gestor de bases de datos "phpMyAdmin";
- Servidor VPN para conexión remota desde varios dispositivos;
- Servidor FTP para subir y descargar archivos;

I installed an 8GB Samsung RAM chip (search ASIN: B07JWG53DG) and it registers 10GB total without any 3rd party RAM warnings. Overkill? Yes, but now I don't have to hunt for this RAM later.
Reasonably quiet using 2x Ironwolf non-pro 4TB disks – e.g. disk access is audible in a very quiet room. The fan is silent. Gigabit transfer speeds using single ethernet.

I set this up using a Chromebook, no PC or MAC involved. I mapped the shared drives to my Chromebook with no issues. I used the USB connections to transfer files an do a compete backup. No problems. I download Torrents using th NAS. Again no PC or Mac involved. I can take my chromebook to work or just shut if off and the NAS continues the download. Basically I no longer need a PC for anything I do. I have become a complete Chromebook home and this NAS made it possible.
