Product was unserviceable with barely 200 hours of operations. A fault ticket was lodged as product is within warranty period.

Synology requested for an upfront USD$84 charge. No payment, no servicing.

An unfair practice where they had sold a defective product and for the consumer to bare all costs.

I did some research QNAP vs Synology vs FreeNAS, 2Bay vs 4bay, etc.
I have to say that I don't regret my decision. I'm surprised with... everything! The performance of the Intel chips is REALLY GOOD, the quality build is OK, DiskStation Manager is really easy to use, the fact that you can install Docker is superb!! I can be talking about this NAS forever.

HARDWARE
I'm using this NAS with 2x"WD Red NAS" + 2*500GB Samsung 960 EVO Series con SSD caching.

SOFTWARE
I'm running Plex, DNS server, CloudStation, GitServer, VirtualMachine Server, Docker with (mariadb, transmission, youtube-dl, resilio-sync, flexget, jdownloader, nzbget, couchpotato, etc...) + time machine copies + 1 VM Ubuntu always ON + other minor apps. Everything using around 12% of CPU.

My CONS for this NAS would be:
- Default 4GB of RAM is... not enough! I bought CT8G3S186DM (check Crucial 8GB on amazon) to expand it to 12GB. Synology oficial RAM is expensive and the information about what type of RAM you can use is confusing. I'm using CT8G3S186DM and is OK.

As always, Synology creates awesome products that just work. I purchased this unit as my primary unit, and I'm now using my older DS1813+ as my backup unit. It works really great with snapshot replication, so it now replicates all my data overnight, which is what I wanted. I'd want to write all about it's features and such, but we'd be here for a long time. So I'll just cover the main pros and cons:
PROS:
* It just works, seriously, pop in some drives, follow the web-based setup, and you're up and running.
* Synology Hybrid Raid makes things really flexible, you can mix and match drives and it will give you the most storage possible.
* Lots of applications that can be used on it, including Docker, which is super powerful, I even run a GUI-based linux using Docker so I can run an old legacy app I wrote.

CONS:
* CPU is fine for normal NAS tasks and basic file extractions and such, however, the unit is supposed to be capable of running 'multiple virtual machines', but it's so slow it's almost impossible to run even a single VM on the CPU. Luckily I'm not super reliant on this feature.
* Fans are smaller, and therefore louder than my old 1813+. Not that they are super loud, but when you're within 2 metres of the unit, they are definitely audible.

In short, yes, I'd recommend this product, just make sure you run it through a high-end surge protector if you decide to get one, the power supplies are quite sensitive to surges and it's a pain getting a replacement power supply.

Great device, quite simple to turn on and get going but the more you dig the more advanced and powerful features you find. Installed 2x6TB drives in mine and have used the DS218+ to replace a bunch of devices on my home network for media playing, local backups and remote/VPN access. Now using 'Drive' to sync and remotely access documents across my laptop, desktop, tablet and phone. Quite sure will keep finding more jobs for the Synology over the years to come.

The NAS was locally sourced and shipped quickly. The HDD's were sourced from OS and took over a month to be delivered. The NAS and drives aren't cheap, but we accept that true quality doesn't come cheaply. The NAS was assembled and up and running within an hour. It hasn't faltered since. Excellent build quality and useability. We should have bought one of these puppies long ago.

Lo scopo di questa recensione è di condividere le informazioni che ho raccolto prima e dopo l'acquisto di un NAS Synology DS218+, e le impressioni di utilizzo del DSM (Disk Station Manager) che è il sistema operativo montato su tutti i NAS Synology.
Cerchero di scrivere una recensione approfondita, per non eccedere nella lunghezza dovrò necessariamente sorvolare molti aspetti, in questo proverò ad includere le informazioni meno ovvie.

LA LINEA DS218 E QUALE SCEGLIERE IN SINTESI

La lina Synology Diskstation 218 è composta da 4 varianti, con costi e caratteristiche tecniche molto diverse tra una variante e l'altra.
I modelli più potenti e costosi possono gestire con maggiore velocità i carichi di lavoro più intensi, con accessi di più utenti e servizi in esecuzione contemporanea.

In ordine di prezzo la linea comprende:

=== DS218J (circa 170€) ===
La versione più economica DS218J ha una dotazione hardware ridotta ma tutto sommato sufficiente per l'uso tipico casalingo, con pochissimi utenti e servizi in uso contemporaneo.

=== DS218 PLAY (circa 235€) ===
Ha il doppio di memoria RAM e un processore migliore rispetto al DS218J, può effettuare il transcoding dei video 4K, ottimo per l'uso casalingo, anche multimediale.

=== DS218 (circa 285€) ===
Stesso processore ma il doppio di memoria RAM rispetto al DS218PLAY, può effettuare il transcoding dei video 4K, ottimo per utenti esigenti e l'uso casalingo, va bene anche per piccoli uffici e gruppi di lavoro.

PERCHÉ SCEGLIERE UN NAS SYNOLOGY
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sicuramente si possono trovare NAS di altri produttori che a parità di prezzo hanno caratteristiche hardware migliori, ma per quanto riguarda la qualità, varietà e aggiornamento del software nel tempo, i NAS Synology sono al vertice per la categoria di prodotto.

=== SISTEMA OPERATIVO DSM ===
Uno dei vantaggi maggiormente riconosciuti ai prodotti Synology rispetto alla concorrenza è il suo sistema operativo, chiamato DSM (Disk Station Manager), attualmente alla versione 6.1.
Il DSM è probabilmente il miglior sistema di gestione NAS, ha un'interfaccia molto simile all'ambiente operativo di un personal computer, con un desktop, finestre, applicazioni, ecc.
La sua interfaccia è molto "amichevole", nel senso che è molto semplice iniziare ad usarlo, appare molto curato, ordinato e colorato.
Detto ciò, non si può nascondere il fatto che i NAS in generale sono sistemi complicati, offrono una miriade di servizi per cui amministrarli, impostarli per svolgere compiti specifici e mantenerli in sicurezza può richiedere una buona dose di conoscenze informatiche per sapersi destreggiare in un mare di opzioni.
Synology ha fatto e sta facendo un ottimo lavoro per cercare di ridurre questa complessità (che comunque rimane) e con poca fatica il DSM permette di creare un Cloud personale, ovvero di rendere accessibili dati e servizi ospitati sul NAS ovunque vi troviate, sia da computer che da smartphone, ed anche di condividerli con persone e gruppi di persone.

=== COME PROVARE DSM GRATIS ===
Per provare il sistema DSM, sul sito di Synology è disponibile un servizio gratuito che permette di avere una sessione di prova dal vivo della durata di 30 minuti. Cercate su Google "Synology Live Demo": il primo risultato di ricerca (nel momento in cui scrivo) vi porta alla pagina web per iniziare la prova, senza dover installare niente e senza neanche doversi registrare.
Una sessione di utilizzo di DSM mi è stata molto utile per farmi un'idea, quando l'ho provato la prima volta non capivo diverse cose, perchè c'è davvero tanta roba, ma ho avuto un'ottima impressione del sistema che poi l'utilizzo quotidiano mi ha confermato.

=== AGGIORNAMENTI DEL SISTEMA ===
Synology rilascia continui aggiornamenti del sistema e dei pacchetti, per migliorare funzionalità e sicurezza.
La serie 218 è stata commercializzata dalla fine del 2017, ed è incoraggiante trovare nel sito web di Synology che ci sono prodotti commercializzati da fine 2010 (serie 211), che ricevono ancora aggiornamenti del DSM.
Se Synology proseguirà la stessa politica di aggiornamento, si può immaginare che la serie 218 riceverà aggiornamenti fino al 2025 (per approfondire cercate su Google "Synology stato del supporto per il prodotto").

LE DIFFERENZE PIÙ IMPORTANTI TRA LE VARIANTI DELLA SERIE DS218

=== PROCESSORE ===
La prima sostanziale differenza è l'architettura del processore: i 3 modelli meno costosi montano un processore con architettura ARM (per intendersi, la stessa usata negli smartphone), mentre il DS218+ monta un processore con architettura X86 (per intendersi, quella usata nei personal computer).

Per il più economico DS218J si tratta di un processore ARM, 32 bit, 2 core, max 1.3 GHz ( Marvell Armada 385 88F6820 )
Il DS218 Play e DS218 hanno lo stesso processore ARM, 64 bit, 4 core, max 2.0 Ghz ( Realtek RTD1296 )
Il DS218+ usa invece un processore x86, 64 bit, 2 core, max 2.5 Ghz ( Intel Celeron J3355 )

=== MEMORIA ===
Oltre a questo cambia la dotazione di memoria RAM: 0.5GB per il DS218j, 1GB per il DS218 Play e 2GB per il DS218, per tutti e 3 i modelli la RAM non è espandibile, mentre i 2GB di serie del DS218+ possono essere espansi fino a 16GB (ufficialmente fino a 6GB, ma i report in rete sono unanimi, usando 1 o 2 moduli SODIMM da 8GB si possono ottenere rispettivamente 10 o 16GB totali).

=== PULSANTE COPY ===
Solo nelle versioni DS218 e DS218+ sul case c'è un pulsante "Copy", che serve ad attivare una procedura di copia configurabile con un apposito pacchetto software. La procedura permette di copiare determinate cartelle dal NAS ad un dispositivo collegato alla porta USB o viceversa, ed è legata ad un certo dispositivo USB. Ad esempio si può configurare per importare foto sul NAS da una determinata scheda di memoria SD (da collegare usando un adattatore USB) ed effettuare la copia di una cartella dal NAS ad determinato disco USB. Ci sono opzioni per fare copie con più versioni / mirroring / incrementali.

=== PORTA e-SATA ===
Il DS218+ è l'unico dispositivo della serie 218 ad avere una porta e-SATA (external SATA) che eventualmente può essere usata per collegare un terzo disco allogiato in un case eSATA come questo , oppure per espandere il NAS aggiungendo (a caro prezzo) l'unità di espansione Synology dx517 con altre 5 baie disco, che tuttavia condividono una singola porta SATA, invece delle 5 che avrebbero in un NAS nativo a 5 baie.

Il mio consiglio personale: non considerate questa caratteristica come motivo di acquisto.
eSATA non è molto più veloce di USB3, e tutti i NAS della linea 218 hanno almeno 2 porte USB3 (3 per il DS218+) per cui potrete collegare dischi esterni nel più comune formato USB e godere comunque di ottime velocità.
Riguardo alla seconda opzione, se pensate che nel futuro più o meno prossimo avrete bisogno di collegare molti più dischi, vi conviene puntare direttamente su un NAS a 4 o 5 baie come il DS418PLAY o il DS918+ e iniziare a usarli con 1 o 2 dischi, avrete un vantaggio sia economico che prestazionale.

DOTAZIONE DI PACCHETTI SOFTWARE

La dotazione di pacchetti software installabili è molto ricca e la strategia più recente di Synology ha portato al lancio di applicazioni che in qualche modo sono concorrenti di servizi Cloud offerti da Google o da altre grandi aziende:

* Synology Drive è un'alternativa a Google Drive
* Synology Moments è un'alternativa a Google Foto
* Synology Office è un'alternativa a Google Documenti / Fogli di calcolo / Presentazioni
* Synology Chat è un'alternativa a Slack
* Video Station è un'alternativa a Plex

=== Audio Station ===
Permette di gestire, visualizzare e riprodurre una collezione di files audio in streaming, anche da smartphone via 3G/4G (con una app ufficiale apposita) Collegando un adattatore bluetooth ad una porta USB del NAS è possibile collegare delle casse bluetooth e inviargli la musica direttamente, selezionando dischi, brani o playlist dal computer o dallo smartphone.

=== Download Station ===
É un'applicazione che consente di scaricare file da Internet via Web, Bit Torrent, eMule, NZB e altri. In pratica permette di comandare lo scaricamento di file sul NAS dal proprio computer o smartphone via 3G/4G (con una app ufficiale apposita). Dopo aver aggiunto il download al NAS, si può anche spegnere il computer e il NAS scaricherà i file autonomamente, eventualmente avvisando per email al termine dell'operazione.

=== Surveillance Station ===
E' un software di sicurezza che si collega a Telecamere IP e fornisce servizi di monitoraggio, registrazione, motion detection e alerting anche su smartphone. Con il NAS è compresa una licenza permanente per l'utilizzo di 2 telecamere. Si possono acquistare ulteriori licenze permanenti in pacchetti da 1 licenza (circa 50€), 4 licenze (circa 180€) e 8 licenze (circa 330€).

=== Pacchetti "Business" ===
Tra una variante e l'latra della serie 218 oltre alla dotazione hardware cambia anche il parco di pachetti software installabili.
Ad esempio diversi pacchetti orientati all'utenza di tipo business sono installabili solo su DS218 o DS218+, ma la lista dei pacchetti installabili è molto lunga e non è possibile sintetizzarla qui, per approfondire cercate su Google "Synology Pacchetti add-on".

PACCHETTI INSTALLABILI SOLO SUL DS218+
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Una delle differenze più sostanziose tra il DS218+ e il resto della linea 218 è la possibilità di installare Docker, Virtual Machine Manager e Snapshot Replication.

Forse il concetto di Virtual Machine è un pò più noto di quello dei pacchetti Docker, provo a spiegarle in sintesi con le parole più semplici che posso:

=== VIRTUAL MACHINE ===
Il concetto di Virtual Machine (VM) è la possibilità di far girare uno o più sistemi operativi (OS) ospiti su un hardware ospitante, che esegue direttamente il suo OS (in questo caso il DSM) e in sostanza condivide le risorse hardware a disposizione con gli OS ospiti.
Il VMM ha il ruolo di supervisore, per assegnare risorse limitate a ciascun ospite e isolarle affinché non ci siano "sconfinamenti".

=== DOCKER ===
Docker è un sistema di paravirtualizzazione, che permette creare dei "contenitori", ovvero insiemi di librerie software, servizi e quant'altro è necessario a far funzionare una applicazione o un sistema di qualsiasi tipo.
Docker usa i "namespace" di Linux per eseguire applicazioni pacchettizzate in questo nuovo formato.
I vantaggi rispetto alle virtual machine sono diversi: il primo e più importante è il minor consumo di risorse.
Con Docker non è necessario far girare un sistema operativo dentro un sistema operativo come avviene per le VM, è come eseguire una applicazione, solo che è confinata in un contenitore con risorse assegnate ben precise e privilegi limitati.
Negli ultimi anni Docker ha avuto un enorme successo, per cui la disponibilità di pacchetti Docker è vasta e in grande crescita.
Ciò si traduce nella possibilità sul DS218+ di far funzionare applicazioni e servizi creati da terzi in questo nuovo formato, e quindi ben al di la di quanto incluso da Synology nella dotazione software.
Attenzione: al momento far funzionare app Docker non sempre è semplicissimo, in rete ci sono tante guide per imparare e un'immensa comunità open per il supporto, ma non è senza sforzo.

=== SNAPSHOT REPLICATION (BTRFS) ===
Il DS218+ è l'unico prodotto della serie che supporta la formattazione dei dischi con il file system BTRFS e di conseguenza la possibilità di installare il pacchetto Snapshot Replication che ne sfrutta alcune caratteristiche. Per "snapshot" si intende la possibilità di programmare e salvare "istantanee" di una cartella condivisa, in pratica si possono programmare o creare manualmente dei punti di ripristino nel tempo per avere la possibilità di tornare indietro ad una versione precedente di quella cartella. Lo spazio occupato dalle snapshot è molto ottimizzato grazie all'uso di BTRFS che fisicamente registra solo le modifiche tra una snapshot e l'altra, senza duplicare i files.
Sia chiaro che una snapshot non è un backup, se per qualche motivo il file system su cui sono registrate le snapshot avesse dei problemi si rischia comunque la perdita dei dati, per questo Synology offre in questo pacchetto anche la funzione "replication" che serve per programmare o creare manualmente delle repliche delle snapshot su una destinazione diversa, ovvero su un gruppo diverso di dischi locali o su un altro NAS Synology raggiungibile attraverso la rete.

APPLICAZIONI PER SMARTPHONE (ANDROID E IPHONE)

Tutte le app per smartphone che seguono sono sviluppate direttamente da Synology, sono gratuite e si possono installare dagli store ufficiali Google Play e Apple App Store.

=== Synology Chat ===
Per collegarsi al servizio Chat del NAS (un servizio alternativo all'ottimo Slack), utilissimo per avere un canale di conversazione e scambio di file/documenti online tra gruppi di lavoro.

=== DS audio ===
Permette di collegarsi a *Audio Station* sul NAS e riprodurre in streaming la musica che avete archiviato.

=== DS cam ===
Permette di collegarsi a *Surveillance Station* sul NAS e visualizzare in streaming video, sia le registrazioni che il live dalle IP CAM di sorveglianza configurate.

=== DS cloud ===
(non provata, verrà gradualmente sostituita da Synology Drive, può essere utile per alcune funzioni che in Drive non sono ancora presenti)

=== DS file ===
Permette di vedere tutti i files (per cui si hanno permessi) sul NAS e di caricare scaricare manualmente ciò che si vuole.

=== DS finder ===

TRANSCODING: COS'É E COSA SERVE

=== COS'É ===
Per transcoding, si intende la capacità del processore di convertire in tempo reale un flusso video da una certa risoluzione/formato di codifica ad un altra risoluzione/formato di codifica. In sostanza serve a rendere (+ o -) universale la compatibilità tra i video archiviati sul NAS e i dispositivi esterni con i quali si desidera riprodurli.

=== A COSA SERVE ===
In pratica può convertire "al volo" un H265 4K 10bit (che è compatibile solo con dispositivi abbastanza recenti), in un H264 FullHD (che è compatibile anche con i sassi) e in generale può abbassare il bitrate di un video, anche FullHD, H264 o H265, convertendolo in tempo reale in una versione di qualità più o meno inferiore, allo scopo di risparmiare la banda necessaria per trasmetterlo via rete e la potenza di calcolo necessaria per decodificarlo sul dispositivo che lo visualizza. E' una funzione necessaria? Dipende. L'utilità c'è, se avete un archivio di video H265 4K HDR e volete che siano riproducibili anche attraverso SmartTV, Tablet, Smartphone, Android TV, o Computer che non supportano questo nuovo formato, o se volete riprodurre il vostro archivio video da smartphone mentre vi trovate fuori casa, attraverso una connessione 3G/4G.

=== SUPPORTO DEL TRANSCODING NELLA SERIE DS218 ===
Convertire un video da un formato ad un altro è un'operazione molto onerosa in termini di potenza di calcolo, per questo sono stati creati dei "motori di accelerazione hardware", ovvero delle funzioni dedicate all'interno dei processori progettate appositamente per questo e in grado di svolgerle con maggiore efficienza rispetto ad un generico processore.
Dei 4 prodotti nella serie 218 solo la variante più economica "J" non supporta la transcodifica, mentre gli altri supportano fino al 4K 10-bit nei formati H.265, MPEG-4 Part 2, MPEG-2, VC-1. Bisogna notare che il più costoso "DS218+" arriva ad un massimo di 30 fotogrammi al secondo (FPS), mentre gli intermedi "DS218Play" e "DS218" fino a 60 FPS. Nella pratica, i filmati 4K H265 a 60FPS sono estremamente rari, se non inesistenti, e lo standard cinetelevisivo non supera i 30FPS, per cui al momento la transcodifica a 60FPS è del tutto inutile.

=== OPINIONI PERSONALI ===
Personalmente trovo la funzionalità di transcoding abbastanza inutile, la transizione verso H265 e il 4K va avanti abbastanza lentamente e la maggior parte dei filmati che si trovano in giro sono registrati in formato H264 FullHD, oltre a questo la riproduzione su smartphone mentre sono fuori casa non mi interessa.

KODI, PLEX o VIDEOSTATION?

Chi intende usare il NAS come media server, potrà avvalersi di diverse soluzioni software, tra le tante, Kodi e Plex sono certamente tra le migliori per ordinare e rendere accessibile un archivio di video offrendo un'interfaccia di presentazione molto curata e in stile media center.

Personalmente uso con soddisfazione Kodi, un software opensource da installare sui dispositivi client, computer, smartphone, tablet, ecc (NB: quindi non sul NAS, che per Kodi va a fungere solo da sorgente video, lo si configura per attingere dalle cartelle condivise in rete del NAS).

Viceversa, non ho mai considerato Plex (disponibile solo per DS218j e DS218+, sostanzialmente è usabile solo sul DS218+), un software proprietario che può essere installato sui NAS e nella sua versione gratuita offre un livello di funzionalità simile a Kodi. Plex in effetti offre anche una versione a pagamento con funzionalità aggiuntive (40€/anno o 120€/permanente) e tra queste include il transcoding con accelerazione hardware, che su Kodi manca... ed è qui che entra in gioco VideoStation.

Video Station è un pacchetto software di Synology installabile nel DSM e per funzionalità si sovrappone direttamente a PLEX. Video Station incorpora la funzionalità di transcoding con accelerazione hardware (gratuitamente) e colma senza sovrapprezzo una lacuna di Kodi (per chi ne avesse necessità).

Lo scopo di questa recensione è di condividere le informazioni che ho raccolto prima e dopo l'acquisto di un NAS Synology DS218+, e le impressioni di utilizzo del DSM (Disk Station Manager) che è il sistema operativo montato su tutti i NAS Synology.
Cerchero di scrivere una recensione approfondita, per non eccedere nella lunghezza dovrò necessariamente sorvolare molti aspetti, in questo proverò ad includere le informazioni meno ovvie.

LA LINEA DS218 E QUALE SCEGLIERE IN SINTESI

La lina Synology Diskstation 218 è composta da 4 varianti, con costi e caratteristiche tecniche molto diverse tra una variante e l'altra.
I modelli più potenti e costosi possono gestire con maggiore velocità i carichi di lavoro più intensi, con accessi di più utenti e servizi in esecuzione contemporanea.

In ordine di prezzo la linea comprende:

La versione più economica DS218J ha una dotazione hardware ridotta ma tutto sommato sufficiente per l'uso tipico casalingo, con pochissimi utenti e servizi in uso contemporaneo.

Ha il doppio di memoria RAM e un processore migliore rispetto al DS218J, può effettuare il transcoding dei video 4K, ottimo per l'uso casalingo, anche multimediale.

Stesso processore ma il doppio di memoria RAM rispetto al DS218PLAY, può effettuare il transcoding dei video 4K, ottimo per utenti esigenti e l'uso casalingo, va bene anche per piccoli uffici e gruppi di lavoro.

PERCHÉ SCEGLIERE UN NAS SYNOLOGY

Sicuramente si possono trovare NAS di altri produttori che a parità di prezzo hanno caratteristiche hardware migliori, ma per quanto riguarda la qualità, varietà e aggiornamento del software nel tempo, i NAS Synology sono al vertice per la categoria di prodotto.

=== SISTEMA OPERATIVO DSM ===
Uno dei vantaggi maggiormente riconosciuti ai prodotti Synology rispetto alla concorrenza è il suo sistema operativo, chiamato DSM (Disk Station Manager), attualmente alla versione 6.1.
Il DSM è probabilmente il miglior sistema di gestione NAS, ha un'interfaccia molto simile all'ambiente operativo di un personal computer, con un desktop, finestre, applicazioni, ecc.
La sua interfaccia è molto "amichevole", nel senso che è molto semplice iniziare ad usarlo, appare molto curato, ordinato e colorato.
Detto ciò, non si può nascondere il fatto che i NAS in generale sono sistemi complicati, offrono una miriade di servizi per cui amministrarli, impostarli per svolgere compiti specifici e mantenerli in sicurezza può richiedere una buona dose di conoscenze informatiche per sapersi destreggiare in un mare di opzioni.
Synology ha fatto e sta facendo un ottimo lavoro per cercare di ridurre questa complessità (che comunque rimane) e con poca fatica il DSM permette di creare un Cloud personale, ovvero di rendere accessibili dati e servizi ospitati sul NAS ovunque vi troviate, sia da computer che da smartphone, ed anche di condividerli con persone e gruppi di persone.

=== COME PROVARE DSM GRATIS ===
Per provare il sistema DSM, sul sito di Synology è disponibile un servizio gratuito che permette di avere una sessione di prova dal vivo della durata di 30 minuti. Cercate su Google "Synology Live Demo": il primo risultato di ricerca (nel momento in cui scrivo) vi porta alla pagina web per iniziare la prova, senza dover installare niente e senza neanche doversi registrare.
Una sessione di utilizzo di DSM mi è stata molto utile per farmi un'idea, quando l'ho provato la prima volta non capivo diverse cose, perchè c'è davvero tanta roba, ma ho avuto un'ottima impressione del sistema che poi l'utilizzo quotidiano mi ha confermato.

=== AGGIORNAMENTI DEL SISTEMA ===
Synology rilascia continui aggiornamenti del sistema e dei pacchetti, per migliorare funzionalità e sicurezza.
La serie 218 è stata commercializzata dalla fine del 2017, ed è incoraggiante trovare nel sito web di Synology che ci sono prodotti commercializzati da fine 2010 (serie 211), che ricevono ancora aggiornamenti del DSM.
Se Synology proseguirà la stessa politica di aggiornamento, si può immaginare che la serie 218 riceverà aggiornamenti fino al 2025 (per approfondire cercate su Google "Synology stato del supporto per il prodotto").

LE DIFFERENZE PIÙ IMPORTANTI TRA LE VARIANTI DELLA SERIE DS218

=== PROCESSORE ===
La prima sostanziale differenza è l'architettura del processore: i 3 modelli meno costosi montano un processore con architettura ARM (per intendersi, la stessa usata negli smartphone), mentre il DS218+ monta un processore con architettura X86 (per intendersi, quella usata nei personal computer).

Per il più economico DS218J si tratta di un processore ARM, 32 bit, 2 core, max 1.3 GHz ( Marvell Armada 385 88F6820 )
Il DS218 Play e DS218 hanno lo stesso processore ARM, 64 bit, 4 core, max 2.0 Ghz ( Realtek RTD1296 )
Il DS218+ usa invece un processore x86, 64 bit, 2 core, max 2.5 Ghz ( Intel Celeron J3355 )

=== MEMORIA ===
Oltre a questo cambia la dotazione di memoria RAM: 0.5GB per il DS218j, 1GB per il DS218 Play e 2GB per il DS218, per tutti e 3 i modelli la RAM non è espandibile, mentre i 2GB di serie del DS218+ possono essere espansi fino a 16GB (ufficialmente fino a 6GB, ma i report in rete sono unanimi, usando 1 o 2 moduli SODIMM da 8GB si possono ottenere rispettivamente 10 o 16GB totali).

=== PULSANTE COPY ===
Solo nelle versioni DS218 e DS218+ sul case c'è un pulsante "Copy", che serve ad attivare una procedura di copia configurabile con un apposito pacchetto software. La procedura permette di copiare determinate cartelle dal NAS ad un dispositivo collegato alla porta USB o viceversa, ed è legata ad un certo dispositivo USB. Ad esempio si può configurare per importare foto sul NAS da una determinata scheda di memoria SD (da collegare usando un adattatore USB) ed effettuare la copia di una cartella dal NAS ad determinato disco USB. Ci sono opzioni per fare copie con più versioni / mirroring / incrementali.

=== PORTA e-SATA ===
Il DS218+ è l'unico dispositivo della serie 218 ad avere una porta e-SATA (external SATA) che eventualmente può essere usata per collegare un terzo disco allogiato in un case eSATA come [[ASIN:B00N3CWJ2E questo]], oppure per espandere il NAS aggiungendo (a caro prezzo) l'unità di espansione [[ASIN:B06Y929H2M Synology dx517]] con altre 5 baie disco, che tuttavia condividono una singola porta SATA, invece delle 5 che avrebbero in un NAS nativo a 5 baie.

Il mio consiglio personale: non considerate questa caratteristica come motivo di acquisto.
eSATA non è molto più veloce di USB3, e tutti i NAS della linea 218 hanno almeno 2 porte USB3 (3 per il DS218+) per cui potrete collegare dischi esterni nel più comune formato USB e godere comunque di ottime velocità.
Riguardo alla seconda opzione, se pensate che nel futuro più o meno prossimo avrete bisogno di collegare molti più dischi, vi conviene puntare direttamente su un NAS a 4 o 5 baie come il [[ASIN:B075DCGL8C DS418PLAY]] o il [[ASIN:B075DDZ894 DS918+]] e iniziare a usarli con 1 o 2 dischi, avrete un vantaggio sia economico che prestazionale.

La dotazione di pacchetti software installabili è molto ricca e la strategia più recente di Synology ha portato al lancio di applicazioni che in qualche modo sono concorrenti di servizi Cloud offerti da Google o da altre grandi aziende:

* Synology Moments è un'alternativa a Google Foto
* Synology Office è un'alternativa a Google Documenti / Fogli di calcolo / Presentazioni
* Synology Chat è un'alternativa a Slack
* Video Station è un'alternativa a Plex

=== Audio Station ===
Permette di gestire, visualizzare e riprodurre una collezione di files audio in streaming, anche da smartphone via 3G/4G (con una app ufficiale apposita) Collegando un adattatore bluetooth ad una porta USB del NAS è possibile collegare delle casse bluetooth e inviargli la musica direttamente, selezionando dischi, brani o playlist dal computer o dallo smartphone.

=== Download Station ===
É un'applicazione che consente di scaricare file da Internet via Web, Bit Torrent, eMule, NZB e altri. In pratica permette di comandare lo scaricamento di file sul NAS dal proprio computer o smartphone via 3G/4G (con una app ufficiale apposita). Dopo aver aggiunto il download al NAS, si può anche spegnere il computer e il NAS scaricherà i file autonomamente, eventualmente avvisando per email al termine dell'operazione.

=== Surveillance Station ===
E' un software di sicurezza che si collega a Telecamere IP e fornisce servizi di monitoraggio, registrazione, motion detection e alerting anche su smartphone. Con il NAS è compresa una licenza permanente per l'utilizzo di 2 telecamere. Si possono acquistare ulteriori licenze permanenti in pacchetti da [[ASIN:B001JD8J8M 1 licenza]] (circa 50€), [[ASIN:B001JD8J8W 4 licenze]] (circa 180€) e [[ASIN:B00L3118BA 8 licenze]] (circa 330€).

=== Pacchetti "Business" ===
Tra una variante e l'latra della serie 218 oltre alla dotazione hardware cambia anche il parco di pachetti software installabili.
Ad esempio diversi pacchetti orientati all'utenza di tipo business sono installabili solo su DS218 o DS218+, ma la lista dei pacchetti installabili è molto lunga e non è possibile sintetizzarla qui, per approfondire cercate su Google "Synology Pacchetti add-on".

PACCHETTI INSTALLABILI SOLO SUL DS218+
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Una delle differenze più sostanziose tra il DS218+ e il resto della linea 218 è la possibilità di installare Docker, Virtual Machine Manager e Snapshot Replication.

Forse il concetto di Virtual Machine è un pò più noto di quello dei pacchetti Docker, provo a spiegarle in sintesi con le parole più semplici che posso:

=== VIRTUAL MACHINE ===
Il concetto di Virtual Machine (VM) è la possibilità di far girare uno o più sistemi operativi (OS) ospiti su un hardware ospitante, che esegue direttamente il suo OS (in questo caso il DSM) e in sostanza condivide le risorse hardware a disposizione con gli OS ospiti.
Il VMM ha il ruolo di supervisore, per assegnare risorse limitate a ciascun ospite e isolarle affinché non ci siano "sconfinamenti".

=== DOCKER ===
Docker è un sistema di paravirtualizzazione, che permette creare dei "contenitori", ovvero insiemi di librerie software, servizi e quant'altro è necessario a far funzionare una applicazione o un sistema di qualsiasi tipo.
Docker usa i "namespace" di Linux per eseguire applicazioni pacchettizzate in questo nuovo formato.
I vantaggi rispetto alle virtual machine sono diversi: il primo e più importante è il minor consumo di risorse.
Con Docker non è necessario far girare un sistema operativo dentro un sistema operativo come avviene per le VM, è come eseguire una applicazione, solo che è confinata in un contenitore con risorse assegnate ben precise e privilegi limitati.
Negli ultimi anni Docker ha avuto un enorme successo, per cui la disponibilità di pacchetti Docker è vasta e in grande crescita.
Ciò si traduce nella possibilità sul DS218+ di far funzionare applicazioni e servizi creati da terzi in questo nuovo formato, e quindi ben al di la di quanto incluso da Synology nella dotazione software.
Attenzione: al momento far funzionare app Docker non sempre è semplicissimo, in rete ci sono tante guide per imparare e un'immensa comunità open per il supporto, ma non è senza sforzo.

=== SNAPSHOT REPLICATION (BTRFS) ===
Il DS218+ è l'unico prodotto della serie che supporta la formattazione dei dischi con il file system BTRFS e di conseguenza la possibilità di installare il pacchetto Snapshot Replication che ne sfrutta alcune caratteristiche. Per "snapshot" si intende la possibilità di programmare e salvare "istantanee" di una cartella condivisa, in pratica si possono programmare o creare manualmente dei punti di ripristino nel tempo per avere la possibilità di tornare indietro ad una versione precedente di quella cartella. Lo spazio occupato dalle snapshot è molto ottimizzato grazie all'uso di BTRFS che fisicamente registra solo le modifiche tra una snapshot e l'altra, senza duplicare i files.
Sia chiaro che una snapshot non è un backup, se per qualche motivo il file system su cui sono registrate le snapshot avesse dei problemi si rischia comunque la perdita dei dati, per questo Synology offre in questo pacchetto anche la funzione "replication" che serve per programmare o creare manualmente delle repliche delle snapshot su una destinazione diversa, ovvero su un gruppo diverso di dischi locali o su un altro NAS Synology raggiungibile attraverso la rete.

Nella pratica, i filmati 4K H265 a 60FPS sono estremamente rari, se non inesistenti, e lo standard cinetelevisivo non supera i 30FPS, per cui al momento la transcodifica a 60FPS è del tutto inutile.

Personalmente trovo la funzionalità di transcoding abbastanza inutile, la transizione verso H265 e il 4K va avanti abbastanza lentamente e la maggior parte dei filmati che si trovano in giro sono registrati in formato H264 FullHD, oltre a questo la riproduzione su smartphone mentre sono fuori casa non mi interessa.

KODI, PLEX o VIDEOSTATION?

Chi intende usare il NAS come media server, potrà avvalersi di diverse soluzioni software, tra le tante, Kodi e Plex sono certamente tra le migliori per ordinare e rendere accessibile un archivio di video offrendo un'interfaccia di presentazione molto curata e in stile media center.

Personalmente uso con soddisfazione Kodi, un software opensource da installare sui dispositivi client, computer, smartphone, tablet, ecc (NB: quindi non sul NAS, che per Kodi va a fungere solo da sorgente video, lo si configura per attingere dalle cartelle condivise in rete del NAS).

Viceversa, non ho mai considerato Plex (disponibile solo per DS218j e DS218+, sostanzialmente è usabile solo sul DS218+), un software proprietario che può essere installato sui NAS e nella sua versione gratuita offre un livello di funzionalità simile a Kodi. Plex in effetti offre anche una versione a pagamento con funzionalità aggiuntive (40€/anno o 120€/permanente) e tra queste include il transcoding con accelerazione hardware, che su Kodi manca... ed è qui che entra in gioco VideoStation.

Video Station è un pacchetto software di Synology installabile nel DSM e per funzionalità si sovrappone direttamente a PLEX. Video Station incorpora la funzionalità di transcoding con accelerazione hardware (gratuitamente) e colma senza sovrapprezzo una lacuna di Kodi (per chi ne avesse necessità).

Ce que j'aime ;
- 4 baies donc compatible RAID 5, permettant la perte d'un de mes volumes
- L'interface du DSM très intuitive et épurée tout en présentant toutes les infos nécessaires
- La compatibilité avec les différents containers grâce à Docker (j'ai ainsi déployé Plex pour gérer ma médiathèque pour pouvoir regarder mes séries et films sur ma TV ainsi que toutes les autres plateformes disponibles)
- Les performances (j'avais souvent des problèmes avec mon QNAP, mais là je peux monter à 100% de CPU pendant toute une journée sans souci)
- Les alertes de Synology par mail quand il y a des vulnérabilités

Ce que j'aime moins:
- Un peu faible en CPU si on a des besoins un peu plus élevés (je fais beaucoup d'automatisation de process)

NAS mit guter Performance und vielen Einsatzmöglichkeiten

Hallo Amazon Gemeinde,

seit mittlerweile November 2017 habe ich die DiskStation 918+ von Synology als mein erstes NAS System im privaten Einsatz am Laufen. Ich möchte diese Rezension dafür nützen meine bisherigen Erfahrungen mit euch zu teilen.

Use Case:
Angeschafft habe ich mir die DiskStation primär um Videos und Audio lokal zu streamen sowie eine zentrale Ablage für die unterschiedlichsten Dokumente zu haben. Auch für diverse Backups von PCs usw. benötigte ich eine geeignete Lösung. Über kurz oder lang möchte ich auch möglich viele Dateien auf das NAS umlagern, für die ich momentan noch auf die ein oder andere Cloud-Lösung zurückgreife z.B. werde ich meine iCloud Fotobibliothek auf die DS übertragen und Fotos künftig nur noch in meiner „eigenen“ Cloud verwenden.

Konfiguration:
Ausgestattet habe ich meine DiskStation (DS) mit zusätzlichen 4 GB RAM von Crucial vom Typ CT4G3S186DJM. Wohlwissend, dass die Garantie von Synology nur unberührt bleibt, wenn man den offiziellen RAM-Riegel nimmt bin ich das Risiko eingegangen. Bei den Festplatten setze ich auf vier IronWolf HDDs von Seagate mit jeweils 10 TB und Heliumfüllung. Einen möglichen SSD Cache habe ich bis jetzt noch nicht ausprobiert. In Verbindung mit der DS verwende ich auch eine kleine USV von Eaton. Im Falle eines Stromausfalls kann die USV der DiskStation mittels USB-Kabel diese Info weiterleiten. Die DS fährt innerhalb einer frei definierbaren Zeit automatisch herunter.

Einrichtung und Bedienung:
Die Installation des RAM Riegels sowie der 4 HDDs war schnell und einfach erledigt. Es wurde auch kein zusätzliches Werkzeug benötigt. Ebenfalls schnell erledigt war die softwareseitige Ersteinrichtung. Die über den Browser erreichbare Weboberfläche führt übersichtlich gestaltet durch die Erstkonfiguration. Es müssen u.a. der Erstbenutzer und ein Passwort vergeben werden.
Die HDDs habe ich übrigens in Synologys eigenem Format SHR zu einem RAID 5 ähnlichem Verbund konfiguriert.

In der Weboberfläche angekommen lassen sich sogleich weitere wichtige Dienste installieren, zusätzliche Benutzer anlegen und natürlich neue freizugebende Ordner anlegen. Die Rechtevergabe finde ich sowohl auf Benutzerebene als auch auf Ordnerebene übersichtlich gestaltet. Möchte man bestimmte Dateien in einem verschlüsselten Ordner ablegen, muss dieser jedoch gleich bei der Erstellung verschlüsselt werden. Nachträglich ist dies nicht mehr möglich zu ändern.

Ich habe mein NAS auch so konfiguriert, dass es zu geplanten Zeiten hoch- bzw. herunterfährt. Zu Zeiten auf denen ich für gewöhnlich nicht zu Hause bin muss es für meine Anwendungszwecke nicht zwingen laufen. Diese Funktion hat sich bis jetzt als sehr zuverlässig erwiesen.

Praxis Multimedia:
Synology selber bietet einige durchaus interessante Applikationen für Foto, Video oder Audio Anwendungen. Hauptsächlich verwende ich aus der Synology eigenen Suite die FotoStation in Verbindung mit der DS Foto App für iOS.
Die VideoStation habe ich momentan nicht aktiviert, da es insbesondere für h265 Filme in UHD Auflösung mit HDR bessere Lösungen gibt.
Experimentiert habe ich anfangs mit Plex. Der Plex-Server war auf dem NAS recht schnell eingerichtet. Filmdateien werden automatisch gescannt und zuverlässig mit Metadateninfos und Cover versehen. Im Falle lassen sich diese auch manuell nachbearbeiten.

Auf Clientseite, bei mir iPad und vor allem auf dem Apple TV 4K, funktionierte das Streaming über die Plex App mit Ausnahme der HDR Titel relativ gut. Ganz zufrieden war ich jedoch nicht, sodass ich mir für iOS und tvOS die App Infuse angesehen habe. Diese stellt in Kombination mit der DiskStation nun eine sehr zufriedenstellende Lösung dar.
Natürlich lassen sich div. Medien auch über DLNA und den Medien-Server genannten Dienst streamen. Für mich hat dies jedoch den Nachteil, dass keine wirkliche Rechtevergabe erfolgen kann. Alle Dateien z.B. im „Video“ Ordner sind auf allen Clients ersichtlich. Mit Plex oder eben Infuse lässt sich das deutlich besser regeln.

Performance:
Der obligatorische Geschwindigkeitstest bescheinigt der DiskStation gute Werte. Der Windows-Explorer zeigt sowohl beim Lesen als auch beim Schreiben 110-120 MB/s an. Das ist sehr nahe an der maximalen Gigabit Netzwerkleistung. Um mehrere Clients gleichzeitig mit noch mehr Speed bedienen zu können habe ich beide LAN-Anschlüsse zu einem LAG-Verbund zusammengeschlossen. Mit dem richtigen Switch stehen daher seitens der DiskStation max. zwei GBit/s (2x 1 GBit) zur Verfügung. Sehr praktisch also, wenn mehrere Clients gleichzeitig auf das NAS zugreifen.

Prozessor und RAM kann ich mit meinen Anwendungszwecken übrigens kaum auslasten. Dazu ist jedoch zu sagen, dass Videos durch die verwendeten Applikationen lokal auf den Clients decodiert werden und nicht auf dem NAS.
Insgesamt bin ich mit der Leistung der DS sehr zufrieden. Für die Hauptaufgaben die ich an ein NAS stelle, steht jederzeit genügend Leistung zur Verfügung. Ruckler oder „Denkpausen“ sind bei mir bis heute nicht aufgetreten.
Es wäre auch möglich auf der DS virtuelle Maschinen zu betreiben. Die Performance einer Windows 10 Maschine ist allerdings eher als mittelmäßig zu bezeichnen. Es funktioniert, jedoch bin in vom PC her eine schnellere und flüssigere Bedienung gewöhnt (Win10 ebenfalls in einer VM). Allerdings würde ich für solche Dinge sowieso einen Server anschaffen und nicht ein Network Attached Storage.

Bzgl. der Lautstärke im leisen Modus kann ich euch berichten, dass die Lüfter in sehr leiser umgeben wahrnehmbar sind. Einen Tick lauter sind zudem die Geräusche bei Festplattenzugriff. Im Wohnzimmer möchte ich die DiskStation eher nicht betreiben wollen.
Insbesondere nicht, wenn man eine möglichst ruhige Umgebung wünscht und nicht dauerhaft eh ein Radio o.ä. laufen hat. Rein zum Fernsehen würde mich die DS jedoch nicht stören, da hier die Lüftergeräusche kaum noch auszumachen sind und die Festplattengeräusche weitgehend in den Hintergrund treten. Ich habe die DS übrigens in einem mittelgroßen Serverschrank im Büro stehen. Auch hier ist die DS wahrnehmbar, wenn bis auf den PC kein Gerät eingeschalten ist das Geräusche von sich gibt.
Ich habe geplant auf zwei Noctua Lüfter umzusteigen, jedoch erwies sich das Tauschen der Lüfter als umständlicher als bei einigen anderen NAS Geräten von Synology. Einen Wechsel habe ich daher noch nicht vollzogen.

Zusätzliche Dienste:
Wie oben beschrieben werde ich meine iCloud Fotomediathek auf die DS umziehen. In ersten Tests hat die Synchronisation zwischen iPhone und DS über die DS Foto App bereits gut funktioniert. Die App bietet mehrere unterschiedliche Ansichten und auch auf Metadaten kann zugegriffen werden.
Für die Verwaltung der übrigen Dateien verwende ich die FileStation. Der Aufbau erinnert ein wenig an den Windows Explorer. Verschiedenste Formate lassen sich so z.B. über die DS File App unter iOS oder Android einsehen und bearbeiten.
Weitere Dienste wie die Cloud Station Suite, Surveillance Station, Mail-Server, Web-Server, Docker und einiges mehr habe ich noch nicht probiert.

Fazit:
Unterm Strich bin ich mit der DiskStation 918+ als Privatanwender sehr zufrieden. Verschiedenste Medien zu streamen sowie ein zentraler Zugriff auf Daten klappt problemlos. Die Einrichtung ist auch für nicht techn. versierte Nutzer machbar und es werden viele Zusatzfunktionen geboten. Mängel, von denen einige User hier berichten kann ich nur sehr eingeschränkt bestätigen, Ja, die Festplattenhalterungen wirken nicht extrem hochwertig doch vibrieren oder komische Geräusche geben diese bei mir nicht von sich. Einzig die Lüfterlautstärke sowie Festplattenzugriffsgeräusche könnten ein Thema werden, wenn man vorhat das NAS in einer geräuschlosen Umgebung aufzustellen.

UPDATE: 21.08.2018
Wie oben schon angekündigt konnte ich mittlerweile zwei Noctua NF-A9 FLX im NAS testen.
Der Einbau war schlussendlich doch recht einfach und dauert nur wenig Minuten. Was jedoch enttäuscht ist die Geräuschkulisse der neuen Lüfter. Ich habe dies nicht mit einem Schallpegelmessgerät kontrolliert, aber mit „freiem“ Ohr hören sich die Lüfter lauter an als die Originalen. Zuerst hielt ich mein Ohr direkt an die neuen Lüfter. Leider musste ich feststellen, dass sich bzgl. Lautstärke nicht viel geändert hat. Mit NAS im Serverschrank ist der Unterschied zwischen original Lüfter und Noctua eigentlich noch deutlicher - zu Gunsten der Originalen. Nach einigen Wochen habe ich nun wieder gewechselt und empfinde das NAS nun wieder leiser.
Das restliche System läuft übrigens weiterhin zuverlässig und schnell.

Bonjour,
Je vous donne mes impressions sur ce DS218+. Tout d'abord j'aime le libre pour préciser avant de commencer et comme ce nas est basé sur debian et est vraiment un plus. J'ai utilisé en somme mes propres applications et quelques unes du synology et je dois dire qu'il est vraiment souple de ce côté là.

Configuration :
- 2 disque dur Toshiba 3to 7200trs/min
- 1 mémoire RAM hyperX 8go soit 10go en tout
- Connexion internet : Ethernet
- Consommation : environ 20 watts.

Mes applications :
- Syncthing (synchronisation de données vers mon Pc et mon téléphone)
- Emby (lecteur de média, vidéo essentiellement jusqu'à 1080p, pas stable avec un chromecast, sinon stable lecture vidéo PS4, sur galaxy S7 même vers l'extérieur en passant par vpn en 4G)
- Nextcloud (Fonction synchronisation de mes agendas et des contacts du téléphone, encore d'autres fonctions à exploiter)
- Un vpn (Openvpn) sur un serveur ovh permet de connecter quelques applications du synology comme
- Download (permettant le téléchargement de torrents & autres)
- Ds Audio (regarder des vidéos, écouter la radio, sa musique)

Et grâce à quelques règles dans le firewall (très puissant et une simplicité d'utilisation) filtrage aux petits oignons, j'utilise uniquement une connexion extérieur avec l'ip du vpn. Je n'utilise pas QuickConnect qui est l'accès extérieur du synology habituel mais testé et très fiable.

- Pour le reste seulement en local, une fois mon Pc sur le même réseau que le nas par exemple, synchronise données, agenda etc...

- Ayant un raspberry qui me sert de centrale domotique avec domoticz, je peux voir la température de mes disques, la charge du CPU etc...

- Bref j'arrête là voilà la principale fonction de ce Nas, très polyvalent et fiable, sécurisation simple d'utilisation, autant pour débutant que geek comme moi.

- Tellement à dire dessus que je dois oublié la moitié voir plus, bref en tout cas je le recommande vivement.

Synology DS218+

Being my first NAS I spent long enough trying to decide which one to get, and eventually decided that I would get one that was somewhat more powerful than I needed, because there was so much I didn't know about a modern NAS, so much they could do, that I might well regret buying a less powerful model.

My primary use for the NAS is backup, but I want to experiment with all the other goodies they offer.

The NAS arrives very well packed and is very well presented. There is a short installation guide that tells you how to insert a disc, connect the NAS to your network, and log in using a web browser. Once you are logged on, again the presentation is excellent. The environment is very Windows like ~ very friendly and simple. Digging in the menus you soon you very soon start to realise that this machine can do a tremendous amount.

I felt most of the help missed out the very basic stuff for real noobs like myself. The help tends to be business oriented and so assumes you know something about a NAS and the language. For example, after initialisation, although the device web page was visible on my Windows network, the storage space was not. When I finally found the configuration setting to make it visible, I couldn't create a folder in it. ...no guide as to how you should create any. It assumes you know that all folders are called Shared Folders whether they are shared or not. Lol. Another example is that various applications often have guides on how to set them up, but not how to use them. So they tell you how to configure a backup task but miss the critical information of how you actually trigger a backup. The simple fact is that you aren’t going to get this up and running in one day without some knowledge, and it really does help if you can talk to someone who already has one! It's baffling, but you make quick progress. You can do almost anything, it just takes a while to find out how and overall it's pretty enjoyable albeit time consuming.

It took me about four to five hours or so to get the NAS on my network, folders constructed and my backups started. At the moment I am actually using my old backup software, simply because it works. You can do that, you don't have to use any of the apps Synology provide. The NAS has a number of backup solutions you can download, including ones for the PC, but as per everything else, noob information on these is scant, so I just stuck with what I knew. Incidentally, I elected not to pre-install the most popular apps, during setup, missing that step out it's really simple to add them later. Turned out to be the right decision, there was a lot they wanted to add that I didn't need. Also, you don't need to create a Synology account if you don't want one.

Right there on the main window is an icon you click and all the available apps appear for you to download if you wish. Couldn’t be easier. These is a wide selection of apps from backup software, video and music servers, all the way to an Office suite similar to Microsoft Office. There are calendars, photo apps, even development apps like an implementation of the programming language PHP. So there is a wide variety of tasks you can perform with the device, other than just file serving!

One very interesting thing I noticed is that the USB ports support dongles, so it would be possible to set the NAS up wirelessly although I think you would certainly have to start with it plugged in to your router ~ only after you have plugged in the dongle and configured it could you go wireless. Wireless is of course really handy if you want to locate the NAS out the way, somewhere safe. Anyway, I am off to investigate more of what this device can do!

I have to say that for mere file operations this NAS is probably way more powerful than I need. So far I have not seen it use more than 12% of the 2GB of RAM it has nor more than 53% of it's CPU. Mostly it uses about 11% RAM and 15% CPU. So I think the 218 or even the 218Play would have been more appropriate for me. But having said that, this device can just do so much, I will very probably find new things for it to do, and the extra power and memory will come in handy. I had also planned on buying the RAM upgrade but now having seen how little it actually uses I will leave that to another day! Oh, mind you, another thing you really need to check if you are buying something less than the + is whether the application you want is supported by the NAS you are buying. The + gets all the apps but some are not supported by the cheaper models. So if you intend to buy something other than the +, CHECK!

The only word of warning I would give you is that the NAS automatically sets up a single HDD as SHR. This may not be what you want. You may in fact need Basic and there is no way to convert one to the other without wiping the disk, so you need to know the difference and change it as soon as you log on to the user interface. So one thing I would do is read a guide to Raid that include SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid) and decide what you want now and in future before you set the NAS up, or you may have to do it all again later when you realise what it's done is not for you.

I set my NAS up for maximum power saving so I configured it to power down the discs after 20 minutes and enter full sleep mode each night, waking itself up automatically in the morning. The auto power-on is very useful indeed. It means it's always ready in the day and saving energy at night. Also of course it's extra security if it's off at night.

Anyway, this is a first class device. Buy it!
