To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.
UPSIDE: Easy to set up Robust operating system and apps -- Synology is all over this Good tech support Relatively inexpensive
DOWNSIDE: Does not support the BTRFS File System, which is a key feature when conducting multiple computer backups. You need to limit the amount of backup space each computer consumes in the NAS and this is more difficult without the BTRFS file system.
this little NAS is good to a point, its internals are just not fast enough for what I need. and you can NOT upgrade the ram.. the power cord is a poor design also, every time I moved something close to it or touched it the plug came out and lost power. so it is ok if you don't need to access your files in a quick matter, I do a lot of video editing and pictures so this just doesn't get it for me. I got it, but its going back for a trade up to the next size, that has upgradeable ram.. I hope the power cord is better designed to stay in.
I've had ti have my IT provider help with this several times when it wont let me back up. Also I havr been running the archiving zip process on just one file for 2+ days and it is only at 50% complete. If it wasn't past the return period I would return it. It has cost me quite a bit more than the price I paid to purchase it.
Just from my point of view, the j-series is only good for storage purposes. The CPU is too weak to handle multiple tasks at the same time. If I copy a file, it will not respond until the copying task finished. I returned this and got a DS220+ instead and happy ever after.
Easy disk mounting and setup. Slow (but not Synology's fault) with large files (ethernet limitations). It's diskless so you can build it to the size that you need. A little bit of a learning curve but Synology makes many applications to suite your needs
I like the Synology software and app features. I give this three stars because it is just doesn’t have enough RAM and does handle transcoding and indexing of videos well. If you are dealing with video files from your mobile or other devices I recommend you upgrade to the DS220+ at a minimum. It comes with 2GB RAM and can be expanded up to 6GB.
Doesn't support btrfs. Claims to support RAID 0 and RAID 1, but good luck actually configuring it to use either of those. It defaults to something called "Synology Hybrid RAID", and then refuses to let you change it.
